One thing that is adding to the number for laptops is students. As a student in Seattle, I notice that many students own laptops(perhaps 50/50) if not more compared to desktops. And since there is a wireless access point everywhere on campus and in many places around campus, it is conductive to laptop use.

I think that if Apple wants to have as much success as they had with music, they need to offer a video device. The whole reason they had so many music users was that they had a cool player that everyone wanted as a status symbol.

I am no expert in the field of quantum cryptography, but i could imagine a sort of situation where the "man in the middle" captures all of the photons, before they are sent to the receiver, then calculates the required speed to make up for the latency and boosts the "signal" to prevent the reciever from knowing anything has gone wrong. I used to work for a school district in Washington that deployed ThinClient systems throughout the whole district. At first the staff were whining about how they couldn't install anything(like those dumb picture screensavers) but eventually it quieted down.

If I remember correctly, the ThinClients used Linux to connect to a server running Windows 2000, which made it the same as using a regular Windows box. there is quite a big market for these devices, so I am not surprised that MS is persuing it...
