Great post. My feelings exactly.
I'm not a fan boy of either. I grew up coding basic at 5 years old on an Apple II.. so I know full well about Apple's beginnings. Since the early 90s I've used mainly PCs. And now? Well I have a mac mini, and iPad, iPhone, and I7 PC. I use them all because I need to know everything that is tech as I'm a computer consultant.
However, everything that is useful in business except for graphic design and web design is run on a PC using Windows XP or Windows 7.
Some ads can be informative and can remind you of an issue you needed to solve last week and still have not. I don't believe the problem is with the ads in general, but with the style and way they go about serving you those ads.
If the ads were less annoying I wouldn't mind them at all. Some of the ads are actually very informative rather than spammy if you are on a website that caters to your interest and delivers ads based on content served on the site.
I'd love to see sites implement an ad protocol such as this:
1. No flash-based or animated ads.
2. No ads bigger than 300 x 100 pixels.
3. No ads with bright contrasting colours such as orange when the entire site is white and green.
4. All ads can be turned on or off at the user's preference. This site implements an honour system.
5. Users can select what categories of ads they would or would not like to be served.
If websites and companies were just more sane about their ad policies, I think a lot less people would resort to ad-blockers.
I have a lot of patience for elderly people. If they are in a line I just go to a different line if possible. If I see them in a car, I just take a few breaths and slow down until I can safely pass them.
Now when it's a soccer mom looking for coins in her purse or holding up the line, look out.. hexed_2050 is on the rage:)
I'd rather see the end to cash rather than cheques. I hate when people pay with cash.. sitting there holding up the line while they count their dimes and pennies, then end up dropping them. A card is so easy to use, swipe and done. One thing I don't like about cards is that they can track your purchases and locations.
Google's page is simple and pure. There is one logo and a search bar.
Bing has decided to make their search page bloated with graphics that actually update.
Do you know how painful it is to remote desktop or vnc to someone's computer that has yahoo, bing, or some other search engine besides google set as their homepage? grr!
GoToMyComputer creates an outgoing connection to the GoToMyComputer server. When you want to log in, you log on to the central GoToMyComputer server and click connect. The server contacts the laptop and logs you in.
This bypasses the need to know the IP personally since the laptop creates the outgoing connection to the central server. This also bypasses 99% of all home firewalls since an outgoing connection session is established, enabling the session and allowing for data to pass in both directions.
sufferage?
You're telling me women suffered lately?
I'm not sure about that because if I remember correctly women have developed quite a few rights. One that I can think of off the top of my head is women's suffrage.
While it's great to hear that people are having leaps and bounds towards treating some of these diseases, I would like to point out that with the amount of information we know about hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease, it should be possible to almost completely wipe out premature development of these diseases in the non-elderly and healthy.
I understand that's not always the case and that in some cases hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease cannot be prevented, but I think for the majority, humanity needs to start taking a serious look at how they can prevent these diseases from forming by making adjustments in their lives now. i.e. eating healthy (back to basics like fruits, veggies, milk, and eggs), going to the gym 2-3 times a week, and generally just taking some time out for their families and/or from all the stress.
That said, Crohn's disease, and rheumatoid arthritis probably cannot be prevented, or at least not to my knowledge of what I have read online. And to all the people who already have one of these diseases I hope that studies like these help bring us one step closer to helping overall quality of life.
What are the motivations behind Google even doing this survey/report? Some will say because Google does no wrong and that they are doing it for the betterment of the web, but I smell a few ulterior motives. Hell, even the author of the article smells that same stench when he says, and I quote:
While I can't quibble with the data per se, I find it interesting that Google used this survey to promote Apache over an Internet product made by its chief competitor.
While I understand the sheer implications of each successful progression of walking biped robot mobility systems, I have to wonder what sort of use this certain implication could have besides being a prop for Austin Powers and Mini Me in the next sequel.

I'm not sure if the writer was intentionally attempting to jinx the Windows install, but who in the right mind still installs or recommends Symantec/Norton when great products like Kaspersky now exist?
Ever try removing Norton from a system? It's like pulling wisdom teeth!
I understand that virus protection wasn't the main focus of the article, but he did make reference to it, and in the defense of Windows and giving the article a bit more of a balanced test, the testers should at least make sure they are using good 3rd party products.
I just finished cleaning out all the crappy "Try AOL" shortcuts that were installed in every dark corner of my computer the last time I did something silly like that
Agreed. But since I am an IT professional I have sort of a duty to download and test these things so I can make some recommendations to my clients regarding the software when I encounter it in the workforce.
That said, I did not find any "Try AOL [OMGWTF!11 ALLYOURBASEBELONGTOUS]" shortcuts in NS9 thank god. Installation was almost a complete clone of what you would expect from a Firefox installation. It was even polite enough to ask if I wanted shortcuts on my desktop, quick launch, or program files listings. I was rather impressed and is a good step in the correct direction for Netspace.

How many people actually have commented on this article already without actually downloading and trying the product?
Let's all give it a good shot first before making some quick judgments. Sure it may just be a branded Firefox, but it also may have some great uses. Maybe this is a browser that may be the recommended browser for your aunts and uncles when they get a new system? Who knows.. Let's at least give it a shot before shooting it and leaving it for dead.
I have never heard of a photoshop printing digital using 'traditional methods.'
I guess the word 'traditional' was a bit too generalized. By using the word 'traditional' I meant that they will print your picture out on proper paper that has a gelatin coating on the surface that protects the ink just like normal photographs when they are developed. The current inkjet photo paper does not offer this type of protection.
That, and kids disabling SELinux because they don't understand it.
True this. I was mainly referring to the end-user environment and not that of servers.

Lithium Ion is older technology. Lithium Polymer is the newest battery technology as far as common lithium batteries go.

I guess everyone in the US has their preferred dealers for Viagra and Swiss watches now. The market is too saturated!
Man's level and experience in MMORPG is reversely proportional to level and experience in real life.
Multitasking for one. If you are in Skype and want to run another program, you can forget about it with the current iPhones.

Sure there is... how about we start with the guy whom made this monstrosity? http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/internet4por n

Good analysis. Mod parent up.
