Yes, it is, but that sort of makes it easier to migrate to (and revert from!). I personally use Reiser, but I recognise the benefit of ext3.

any rational reason for choosing GNOME over KDE2

Some people prefer it! I am one of them (and there are a lot of us...) And when RH fund GNOME development, it stands to reason that they'll use it as the default desktop. SuSE fund KDE and lo and behold it's SuSE's default. (and other distros choose one way or the other) You don't have to use the default, make your own choice - you choose KDE2, fine, it's a great desktop just don't moan about GNOME, ok?)

    Nautilus is dead

No, Eazel is dead, and Nautilus has gone through at least two revisions since then, and is being ported to GNOME2 - that's the great thing about Free Software - it outlives any company if it's good, and Nautilus is goooood! (I don't use it - not enough memory, but hey, it's all about choice innit?)

type in a URL...fire up the appropriate program

GNOME does this too oddly, oh, and it does have a great browser in Galeon.

So, just because you don't use RH doesn't make it any less news. This is a significant revision (remember, noone uses a RedHat version line until x.2 if they have any sense ;-)

    From the document:
we need to develop a schedule that converges on a stable, useful release in at most five milestones, preferably fewer (but likely no fewer than four).

Now, milestones tend to appear every 4 - 5 weeks, so that would be 16 - 25 weeks time (4 - 6 months)

    From the document:
If things go well, we'll be within a milestone of 1.0 after 0.9.9. If 1.0 seems to continually recede as we approach it, our definition of 1.0 in terms of bugs to be fixed is broken. Therefore we will continually review the schedule and the outstanding bugs. If it takes an extra milestone (0.9.10), but 1.0 is reached soon enough, so be it -- but no one should count on an extra milestone. There won't be two or more extra milestones, or again, we will have failed to converge on a short-term stability branch and release within six months.

This would seem to confirm that timescale

The only version of Windows I ever bought was an OEM Win '95c way back in the day, but on my bookcase in my home office are Red Hat 4.0, 5.1, 6.[something - can't remember] and SuSE 6.3, 6.4, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2.

The important thing to note is that we do not *have* to buy these (we could just FTP them), we *choose* to do so.

Why do we choose to? Simple - Red Hat, SuSE, Mandrake, etc, etc are part of the GNU/Linux community. The pay people to contribute code to projects and software we all use (eg SuSE heavily fund XFree86 and ALSA development). So we buy their products to support them.

It's similar in a way to buying shares in a company (but without the post-IPO dotCom blues) that you believe in.

  23. A real shame... on Psion Chucks In The Towel For Consumer Devices · · Score: 4

This is a real shame for the handheld market. Psion were leaders in this industry (in the UK at least, where for ages they basically owned the market, without the need for StrongARM [ahem] tactics).

Psion machines exude quality at all levels, the clam-shell cases are masterpieces of engineering, the satisfying slide as they open really does have to be felt to be believed, and EPOC is without a doubt a killer OS. (It's my #2 favorite, closely followed by whatever the Spectrum ran was called). There is no better way to idle the time away while sat on a train or bus than a quick game of Cascade on my Revo (that's one of the original ones, not the RevoPlus) or rattling off a few thoughts in the jotter or word processor.

That leads nicely to the keyboard, I never cease to be impressed at how easy it is to type on such a small keyboard, and sitting in a coffee house with a huge cappucino that dwarfs the computer you're furtively typing away at results in the most amazing puzzled looks from other caffeine consumers.

I'm just very, very glad that EPOC will continue in the form of the Symbian partnership, and that Psion will no doubt emerge as leaders in whatever is the next big growth area. If they could make the jump from the producer of some of the greatest computer games of the early 80's to producer of the best handhelds, I am sure they will be one of the best at whatever they next turn their collective hands to.

250 jobs lost is always a tragedy, I just hope that the people concerned find that with the skills they have, they are able to find alternative employment very soon.
