SoaP was ripped on as "camp." Which to many, sayyy the Rocky Horror and MST3k crowd, makes it more interesting than a typical B-grade action flick... Even the studio saw this as positive, and repositioned themselves. The started [viral]marketing it as camp, and even reshot some scenes to make them _more_ ridiculous.
PS3 is different. A gadget is either considered a value or it isn't. You don't see people buying UMDs _because_ they're a ripoff... only possibly _in spite_ of it.
The closest thing to "camp" in the gadget world is "retro." For instance, buying an old Intellivision or whatever... but i don't think Sony can effectively market the PS3 this way unless they plan to have another PS3 rollout in 20 years. =)
How much do online rumors, reports and criticism really effect sales of any particular product? We have folks on both sides of the argument saying how much it will or won't effect the PS3.
Obviously as more folks get more information from the web the effects will increase... I think the PS3 will be a great help in gauging where we're at, as far as online marketing.
We had one other big testcase this year with "Snakes on a Plane" and it seemed to boost ticketsales if just a little bit. However with the PS3 there are two differences... one, it's negative press instead of positive... and two, the videogamer crowd might be more prone to get news from the web, because they're slightly geekier than the movie-goer crowd.
I'm interested to see how it all turns out. Whichever way it goes, it'll probably be a lesson for the next generation of consoles.
I'm looking forward to the Wii and playing around with the games. If the Wiimote turns out to be a decent pointing device, I'm also interested in how it may effect human-computer interaction on other machines.
I foresee the same sort of cutting-edgers (heh, ricers) who are playing with Compiz and XGL, hacking together a way to connect to the Wiimote and then tinkering with some wii-gestures to help interact with the desktop.
o Rotate the wand like a steering wheel to flip between tasks or virtual desktops. o Point to the taskbar and lift it like a dumbell to trigger your Expose' clone. o Jab a window to minimize it. Twist the 'knife' in and pull down to close the program. o Amarok hanging again? Give it a few whacks with your 'club' to kill the process.
Goofy, I know. But if this wiimote takes off, maybe we'll see clones of this type of technology and, in time, see some more fun and intuitive metaphores for HCI.
Easy. Add a frame to the top of the page that says "This may have been a typo, did you mean [whatever]?" with a link to dismiss the frame if that's not what you meant.
Like the frame images.google.com adds to the linked site.
I used to think the usability of the GIMP was bad, turns out it's just different from what i was used to. The more i used it exclusively, the more i figured out how nice it was.
Nowadays, if i go back to a windows system with photoshop or paintshop pro, it feels really cluttered and i get 'clausterphobic'.
Of course, i'm speaking as a casual user who does pretty basic operations. Maybe it's different if you work with it professionally?
Am I the only one that doesn't have good luck with MusicBrainz? I've tried it many times and it rarely gets it right. Maybe it only works with really common stuff, but my tastes aren't too off the wall.
I've seen people asking for bulk retagging using MusicBrainz for my favorite music player, but boyhowdy, if I sent my collection through it, I'd never be able to find anything again. =]
In short... if this service is anything like MusicBrainz I hope they offer refunds.
... in fact I was an Opera fanboy. There are still features i like in it that i'm not sure have been emulated using firefox extentions, such as the zoom, fastforward and changing styles on the fly. Even the mousegestures, to me, seem more polished.
But... They've taken a pretty firm stance against including an adblock feature (nevermind that they were the first browser with popup blocking, i believe). There is filter.ini, but it's not the same. It's hidden, and you can't block an image with a simple rightclick. It accepts wildcards, but i don't think it accepts regular expressions.
For me blocking ads is more important than the rest of those nice features. I don't care if that makes me a "thief" or whatever. I understand them taking the stance they do, afterall, they DO serve their own ads. But, as long as they don't have a good blocker, i won't be using their browser.
Yes but if i reformat my harddrive, will it be compatible with Duke Nukem Forever?
Whoa... slashdot cliches... i feel so dirty. I gotta go take a shower y'all.

See! Sony's once again ahead of the curve, not shipping the PS3 with an HDMI cable.
My strategy? To enter "photo" for every photo... and hope someone else has the same strategy.
To be fair I posted that in a BDSM forum, not a Mac forum.
Didn't the Star Wars "debacle" make all sorts of money for George Lucas?

I think a betting pool would be more fun.
thanks for the tip... this worked for me... and i was wondering what had messed up.
Every girlfriend i've ever had has played all sorts of games. It's a real mindf@!#.

This is late but:
Play Star Control 2. It's on a timer, and after a while the galaxy is overrun by the bad guys.
I always found it annoying, because I love to dilly-dally. But if that's what you're looking for, you may like it.
It's now open source: http://sc2.sourceforge.net/

All your base belong to the State.
Is there something like Godwin's Law to cover this sort of nonsense?

You've ruined my April Fools Day.
In the human-robot war sure to come any day now, which side will cyborgs be on?

it's not a dupe, it's "Classic Slashdot."
