The only thing it had to do with regular people was insofar as they might show up on election day and vote the way the OTA news had told them to.

First I want to be sure you know that I agree with what you wrote here. I wish people would be much more clear and refer to copyright infringement as copyright infringement because that is what it is. Doing so, like you say, does not say in any way whether you think it is "good, moral, legal, or should be done/not done".

However, you are not the first person I have seen replying on this article to attempt to clarify that copyright infringement is not stealing, and then in the same post use the term piracy to refer to copyright infringement. I think this speaks volumes about what the RIAA and the like are doing. They take something that is relatively new and until recently a foreign concept (copyright law and the concept of intellectual property) and equated breaching such laws as being the same as things that have been universally hated for as long as man has existed. They like to muddy the waters. It is in their favor to do so. First, they get some people to really think they are the same things. Then they get those people to label people like you and I - who are merely trying to correct - as supporters of these heinous acts.

That actually was the exact opposite for me. I was born in the late 70s but grew up on 50s and 60s music cause that's all my parents liked. I grew up on the Beatles. Then there was that whole anthology thing which allowed me to hear even more of their stuff. That was when I realized that they had maybe 2-3 decent songs each album, and the rest was filler. Later, I learned that was what almost all bands were/are like. First album that I liked every song on was Nevermind. In fact, I can't think of one song from Nirvana that I didn't like, and that includes Endless, Nameless . Before anyone brings it up, I realize Cobain was very influenced by the Beatles.

After hearing a few top 40 songs, I switched back to the commercials.

I'm no music aficionado, but when commercials sound better than the music, then you know there are some serious issues with the music.

Does it matter where her power resides? Let's pretend that you are influential over 10 people, I am influential over 100 people. It wouldn't matter one bit if anybody had ever heard of either one of us, I would still be more influential than you. It wouldn't matter if the influence I had on my 100 people affected you or your people in any way, I would still be more influential than you.

Now let's pretend that you and I are the only people in the world that are influential over more than 5 people. That would make you the second most influential person in the world, but me the most influential person in the world. Again, it doesn't matter that our spheres of influence never intersect, or that neither group has even heard of the other.

Similarly, if Oprah has influence over 20 million people (made up number) than you would have to find a woman who has influence over more than 20 million people to find a woman who is more influential than her. Some posters here have suggested Angela Merkel. I'll grant that as PM of Germany, she probably has a fair bit of influence in the world. Then again, the GP didn't claim Oprah was the most influential woman, just that she was one of the most. I think you'd be hard pressed to find enough more powerful/influential women to bump Oprah out of the "one of the most" category.

But again, it doesn't matter where she is. Before today, I had probably heard of Angela Merkel, but she certainly wasn't a known name. Does she have influence over me or anybody around me? I doubt it. Does that change the fact that she is one of the most powerful/influential women in the world? Not one iota.

tl;dr: Your "fix" didn't fix anything at all.

No, I think you're just a closet fan that wished you could have their stuff. For example, I'm not a Britney Spears fan. If she charged $800 for tickets to her shows I wouldn't complain. Why? Because I'm not a fan and have no desire to see her shows. I'm not a fan of the PS3. I don't complain that it is too expensive. However, I am a fan of nice monitors, and I do complain about how expensive the Dell 3007WFP is. I would very much like that monitor, but I can't afford it, so I complain about its price.

See, when you don't care for something, you don't care for how much it costs. If you're complaining about the cost, it means you want it, but wish it was less costly.

No, that's not the point. What is being discussed is

Microsoft is somehow more 'determined' in their profit-seeking than any other corporation.

. While their conviction for abusing their monopoly is evidence of how determined they are, it is not sufficient to make a comparison between the two. Some corporations that have become monopolies have abused their monopoly status, some have not. If we only compare the ones that have been convicted of abusing their monopoly status (which is relatively few) we still would have to determine if one abused it more than Microsoft abused theirs.
