You should check out Zattoo. It's an internet TV service. Right now it is only available in Switzerland, however, a couple of weeks ago I signed up to be notified when it becomes available in the UK. Yesterday I got an email asking me to become one of the first in the UK to use Zattoo.
I signed up, downloaded the Linux client (LGPL) and can now watch 7 BBC channels plus France 24, TVE Internacional and TV Polonia!
No mention from Zattoo of the need for a TV license, so not sure if this is the case.
As I understand it, the Microsoft format is not open but just an XML wrapper around their old.doc format. They still don't open up on how to implement their format.

Me: Thanks for calling tech support.
Him: Hi, I just purchased a CD Writer, and it says I need to open up my computer to install it.
Me: Yes, and?
Him: I don't have a computer, can I still use it?
Me: Can I place you on hold for one moment?
Him: Sure
Me: Bahahahahahaha!!
This is some kind of joke, right? Because if not, the fact that the US government is not only willing to fuck over its own citizens but also to use its political largesse to dick with everyone else is just about enough for me to start condoning terrorism.
The problem is that there are many people in the UK who would love to end the TV license system of funding the BBC. Giving away content to non-paying foreigners would only give those people more ammunition.
Ooops, wrong clip, this is the right one!
And I believe this must be his son using the laptop.
One would hope so...

Perhaps nobody has any mod points?!? What a time for the system to fail!!
In addition, Microsoft won't assert rights over patents over software technology that may be incorporated into Suse Linux, the people said.

Ummmm.. I think you'll find that "Bear with me" was the original series in this genre!
Slashdot is not using WinBlows Servers.....
Yeah but if YOU do the install, it is ready for grandma to use. I don't think grandma would do too well installing XP either.
The desktop CD boots into a live session and lets you install from there, with very few options that can be changed.
The alternate CD boots into the old text based installer, and allows more options to be configured.
I don't much care for the desktop method of installing.. it didn't even ask if it was OK to install GRUB, just went ahead and did it.
What is somebody switched the CD?
What nifty freebies will Mindawn be giving away to the lucky recipient of their billionth download? Tickets for the 2050 World Cup final!
