  1. Linux on Code Execution Bug In Broadcom Wi-Fi Driver · · Score: 1

Does my "reverse engineered" linux driver have this bug. I guess not. Why is it that a bunch of people who don't get paid come up with bug-free solutions? I guess, either they love their job very very much, or its just the development philosophy or both :)

Certification for this requirement is often an expensive process and often, certified and uncertified parts are identical in everything but price (or availability, more often). I think he's a little bit out there on this one.

There is a reason why military equipment is expensive. There's a difference between "should work" and "works". That's the $$ right there.

Microsoft has a very good research team in place, but that does not ensure innovation. I think they are having problems with translating research into products. Previously, their research was market oriented...say UI design for the common man etc. which did well for their prodcuts initially. That has now saturated.

The kind of innovation we see from MS nowadays is generally of a kind not needed, like what they did with RSS. (it's a standard for a bloody reason!).

Also, MS has spread themselves too thin by stepping into too many areas...OS'es, Search Engines, Spyware, etc. Well, maybe it's time to let go and focus on what they are...an OS company.

BTW, does anyone know how many MS innovations were by acquiring companies. Does that count?

SciPy includes modules for graphics and plotting, optimization, integration, special functions, signal and image processing, genetic algorithms, ODE solvers, and others.

SciPy is developed concurrently on both Linux and Windows. It has also been compiled successfully on Sun and Mac, and should port to most other platforms where Python is available.

    Quality:
Coming to the point, open source apps are necessarily not better quality than closed source apps, but open-source apps have a greater potential to become better.

    Creativity:
Most of these apps use growl, which is a open source notification system for the mac. There are about 60 apps(grew from 10 apps to 50 or so in one week!) which are supported by growl, and it's basically a simple idea, A common notification system. Mindblowing results!

I am sure there are more parameters, but this is what came to mind immediately.

Nowadays, there is so much of development on the mac that I generally find open-source alternatives to closed source apps almost immediately.

It's a bit freaky when you have to compile drivers right off the bat when all you want is to get your sound/wireless/hardware working. But what's the big deal with Kubuntu anyways. I really don't get it!! all you need to do is 'apt-get install kde-base kdm' on ubuntu. I think it's a big wate of time, and all the guy need to have done is to post on ubuntu wiki on how to get kde on a ubuntu machine.
