First, wasn't XP the successor to ME? Of course, even benchmarks Microsoft was using to push XP showed ME was slower than 98. A bit more contrast for people upgrading from ME to XP, I suppose.
Second, the new Intel integrated graphics chips can handle Aero just fine, and I'm assuming the AMD integrated graphics chips do as well. You certainly don't need an expensive new graphics card, just a new computer. Of course, Compiz/Beryl works much better: it has cooler effects and runs on much less powerful hardware.

I don't understand why they couldn't have programmed in a fallback to the Xbox LIVE servers. Did EA ever give a reason as to why it didn't use Microsoft's servers in the first place?

For anyone else who's never heard of a "Biro", it's apparently a ballpoint pen. The word is never used in the US. BIC might be used as a generic term for disposable pens, but it could just as likely be referring to cigarette lighters.
The other trademarks are used generically in the US as well, though. Although as others have pointed out Xerox is losing popularity and around here many people do use "tissue".

It seems more like a supermarket putting store brand or other competing products next to the name brand products they compete with, maybe with some additional advertising (like the price difference) for the store brand products. Which happens all the time and doesn't seem to cause any problems.
By the way, what kind of example is Hoover, something UK specific? Around here in the US we usually just call them vacuums. Frisbees seem like a better example, who calls them "flying discs"?

Hate to reply to my own post, but I did some searching. I found a blog post on the YouTomb study the GP mentioned, not sure if there's anything more.
A look at the API data reveals that it is the same mechanism used for music videos. I believe these restrictions have been in place for a while now, I believe some Canadians were complaining about not being able to watch some music video links last year (perhaps posters actually in Canada or another blocked country could clarify?). As mentioned in the blog post, I see no way to set country restrictions on an uploaded video myself. A search for "country" on YouTube help reveals information about YouTube's video identification tool which reveals "content owners" can block videos in chosen regions. In addition, this page about filing copyright complaints tells complainers to list which countries their copyright applies to. Although I'm not sure how often that's used as it seems videos removed for copyright violation are totally deleted rather than just blocked in the specified countries (although I guess if the content is stored/served from the US, they would need to remove everything that's under copyright in the US).

Apple would definitely have the market share advantage. If they can get it working with all iPods rather than just the current gen, they'd have a definite simplicity advantage over Microsoft whose "Play For Sure" is anything but.
