Ah yes, other benighted sod that regurgitates Republican dogma. <sigh>
The undeniable fact is that state and federal governments are heavily influenced by business interests. Regulations, wage requrements (?), forced (?) benefits, excessive (compared to...?) taxation, and inflation of currency (huh?) combine to create country that has a quality of life that's roughly on par with other developed nations. Laissez-faire capitalism is just as wretched as iron fisted socialism, and Western Europe has done an excellent job of achieving a healthy balance between the two extremes.
Funny how the US ranks 6th in overall quality of life (with Norway being #1 and Canada #3), as stated in a BBC article.
Not meaning to be too much off-topic or perceived as a flamebait troll, but I'd like to toss out a little pet theory of mine regarding Republicans and the abortion issue. So please hear me out and let me know if I'm crazy or maybe onto something:
Since Roe v. Wade, we've had 16+ years of Reagan-Bush-"Dubya", several years of GOP dominated Congress, and a Supreme Court that's now pretty well shifted to a conservative bent. With all 3 branches on roughly the same ideological side, why has there only been a minor nibbling on the edges of the issue rather than an all out assault on the issue? My suspicion is that the GOP is merely using the issue to string along their ideological base for continued support, and is only making token gestures at making an effort. Am I crazy or am I realizing something few have noticed?
Anybody remember the much hyped Rocket Science games from the mid-90's? A team of hotshot game developers form a company and nearly every game sucked ass. Rocket Science was a text book case of what NOT to do, yet history repeated itself on far, far larger scale with the dot-com mania and collapse.
Did anybody notice how, when fighting it out a hellishly hot volcano planet, nobody was even sweating??? I guess it just doesn't get very hot when dueling in front of a blue screen...
I agree with you, although I think it's a tad harsh. The problem isn't unique to today's current generation. After the first 2 or 3 moon landings, the public started to regard such things as almost routine, the same for the shuttle program (until something goes Horribly Wrong). So I think it's just an unfortunate aspect of human nature to become rather unexited about something once the novelty wears off. The same will happen when we return to the moon again, and again after the first "footprints & flags" Mars landing.
Given yesterday's Slashdot item about radio, the next few years will be an interesting time indeed for the world of radio. Under dual assault from satellite and online, terrestial radio is truly going to take a beating, and it will take more than upgrading to HD radio and offering localalized programming and news bites to staunch the bleeding. If terrestrial radio is to survive, it will have to exercise significantly greater imagination and (pardon the word) innovation than what most radio execs have exhibited so far...
Absolutely FANTASTIC idea! That's an OSS distro project I would love to contribute to, and I'm sure there wouldn't be any problem finding volunteers to make it a reality. Anybody here that knows how to roll out a distro CD and get this going?
Even when using PCI hardware based internal modems (such as US Robotics/3-Com modems) it's a crapshoot. Just because a modem is listed as being Linux compatible is no guarantee. Getting online depends a lot on what distro you're using.
For example, on my Linux distro test box I have a 3CP5610 internal PCI modem. It works fine with Xandros, Lycoris, and Mandrake. Knoppix can detect the modem, and dials up to my ISP but cannot truly connect (although my KPPP settings are identical to the settings in Mandrake). Mepis cannot detect the modem, even though I tell it to use ttys4.
With the rise in broadband access, modem support is becoming less of an issue. But for those needing dial-up access, what distro you use can make or break your ability to get online.
Jeez, you Slashdotters seem to think the only alternatives to Photoshop are GIMP (free) and Paint Shop Pro (very cheap). Have you ever considered the middle ground between free/cheap and expensive?? This middle ground is best represented by the CorelDraw suite.
I have little love for the 800 lb gorilla that is Adobe, and think that the CorelDraw suite offers a terrific amount of power for a pretty reasonable price. For vector graphics, I find CorelDraw to be far more intuitive to use than Illustrator. For bitmap editing, Photopaint holds its own against Photoshop very well.
So if you want professional grade graphics tools but don't want to go the Adobe route, then seriously consider their only real competitor, Corel.
Exactly. B5's time has come and gone. For those of us who really liked the series, we should just treasure the fond memories we have of the series when it was at its peak in quality, and when one feels a pang of nostalgia, pop in a DVD of one's favorite episode and enjoy.
After Crusade (yeah, I'm dimly aware of how the series was hobbled by TNT) and Legend, I just can't muster the enthusiasm for new material set in the B5 universe.
I loved the B5 series and miss it. But given the [poor] quality of the B5 spinoff series (Crusade) and telemovies (Call to Arms, Legend of the Rangers), is this really so bad? Sorry, but this had to be said.
This is just more proof of an under-reported trend in IT: insourcing. Google gets cheap(er) labor AND avoids bad PR from outsourcing to some foreign locale known for cheap labor. $60k annual for IT work is almost a joke in the Bay Area, but it's Big Bux in rural areas like the Dalles (Hell, even I don't make that much. Hmmmmmm...maybe I should consider getting a job there, despite my aversion to rural living)
Yes, you should be offended. Racism is *everywhere*. Here's some examples of insidious racism that has crept into our lives:
white sale white paper white-out "Dreaming of a White Christmas"
blackboard black-out blacklist Black Forest Black Sea "Paint it Black"
brown bag brown-out Charlie Brown UPS's "What can brown do for you?" ads
yellow journalism yellow as slang for "cowardice" yellow birch yellow dog contract yellow fever
pinky pinko
and that's just the tip of the iceberg! For those who find racism in anything that refers to colors found in human pigmentation, life is a never ending struggle to avoid being offended. Your plight has touched us all.

In Soviet Russia, TIVO pokes you!
Ah, yes. Wired certainly has a wonderful record at predicting the future. From the Long Boom to Kissing Your Browser Goodbye and a world dominated by Sega, Wired certainly has a fine track record. Keep up the good work guys!
(as done in Knoppix 3.7, don't know about 3.9)
Boot from the Knoppix CD
Open Konsole

type knoppix-installer
answer the prompts
reboot
Done.

Polyhedral dice by the handful!
Sheeesh, and you call yourselves geeks...
