I teach IT classes at a local college part time. When ever possible, I don't require the students to buy a book for the class. Especially when there really isn't a book suitable for what I'm supposed to be teaching. Well, at least one that I can justify making my students spend $125 for. I usually find online sources and include as much real world information as I can.
That said, I'm teaching a new class this upcoming fall semester. The school labels it as Networks and e-commerce. I'm 'supposed' to teach them about computer networks and the world of e-commerce. In my mind, these should be two courses, but then again, this is a business school class.;-)
My current plan (yes, I'm still on teaching vacation) is to spend a few weeks going over network setups. I will have someone coming in to go over telephony (from Ma Bell to VOIP) during the network section and then a computer security expert will come in to bridge the gap between networks and ecommerce.
first off, there is a big difference between foster care kids and children put up for adoption. Foster care children are more than likely going to go back to the parent. They have been taken out of custody 'temporarily' while the parent straightens up/gets out of jail/goes to therapy/etc. Most of them won't/can't be adopted for just that reason.
There are 1,000's of US citizen's (sorry for being US-centric) going to foreign countries to adpot as there is a severe SHORTAGE of children that can be adopted.
No mention of Moria? I can STILL get locked up in that game for hours at a time letting my @ wander at dizzying depths facing creatures great and small.
Maybe I'm just yearning to get back to my late 80's early mornings in the VAX lab.;-)
Actually, my understanding of those who complain the most about sys admins are the ones who don't know what you do. PHB-types would be my guess. I hope anyone with 1/2 a sense of computers understand how hard it is to do what you do. Those people who complain and hit OK for a free iPod? They deserve all the crap that happens to them and their computers.
In short, i hope all of you admins out there know that the people like (most of) us here, know what you go through and appreciate it.
Care to name a few companies which have significant CS R&D labs?
While I don't have pure numbers, I can guarantee there are 100's if not 1,000's of companies doing this every day! Why do you need them to be 'significant'? Did HP start out 'significant'? Doubtful. What you want, is a company that knows how important R&D is, that you shouldn't beg for things. Will every company you find be the size of HP/IBM/MS/Apple? No. But if you try, you will FIND them. There are companies, small and mid-sized all over doing interesting work.
We (CS) people have to stop complaining (and yes, I've been laid off 3x and out of work far too many times in the last 5 years) and make the best of our lot we are dealt. There are jobs out there. Market yourself properly and do the research and you will find one.
too bad these guys aren't in Canada they might be able to use that friendly judge to keep everyone from talking about their outdated (and i'm guessing shooting themselves in the foot) website.;-)
Why doesn't it surprise me this was done by an AC? What if one of his students has a breakthrough that helps get productivity back in the West? hmmmmm... it could happen, but then, why try to HELP an idea, when it's so much easier to quash it with little thought or productive input.
I was glad to see this post, this is exactly the kind of thing I'd love to be able to do in some spare time and i'm looking forward to some intelligent responses.
Or else you can realize that no matter who it is, even your own family, there's always the chance someone will (at least try to) circumvent anything you put in their way.
Maybe I'm missing something. What is wrong with making law enforcements job EASIER? I am NOT saying they should get information they are not entitled to, but why shouldn't police departments be able to put more criminals behind bars? I for one am disgusted when I hear that this criminal has done this that and the other thing in different jurisdictions (sp?) but police weren't able to get that information in time for trial, etc. Do you WANT a bomb-maker next door? Drug den? Pedophile?
Technology should not be used to be a "big eye" but it should make life harder than hell for people who do illegal things.
One question I have, legally, could Open Source be challenged by a defense attorney on the grounds that it is Open Source? Meaning, it wasn't 'packaged' software, who knows who put what code in there (just playing defense atty here). I can see a def. atty. glass-eyeing a jury with tales of the wild world of the internet where countless programmers contribute and who knows what their intentions were? I can see someone saying that their poor, pitiful client was the victim of internet vigilantes who got mad when he cornered a market on WoW.
hmmm... maybe you all could start a collection to get this show on the road.;-)
People, it's Friday (ok, maybe already Saturday Down Under), relax, enjoy the day and listen to some good music and just be happy you're still breathing.
However they are 52 Phish shows that you can either download or stream on nugs.net. I mentioned the LMA as they have downloads from live shows from many other bands.

These are amazing sites to get that show/song you are looking for, from bands who lived and survived by allowing their fans to tape and trade their shows.
I'd say we can date it before Summer 2003 as my roof shows up with the old shingle color (replaced roof that year).
This reminds me of my 7th grade science teacher asking us to date an aerial map of our town. My house was there, but the pool wasn't, so I could estimate the age of the photo using the different years. But I digress.
...one city at a time. Now the city/state will own the logs of all eBay access.;-)
Seriously, that is great, i hope the ball on free wifi gets too big for the PACs/lobbyists/weasels to stop. I know Buffalo is ramping up free wifi as well. Just waiting for them to hit my neighborhood.
No, I am NOT a lawyer, but I have 3 software companies and have paid a crap-load of legal fees. :P
;-) IANAC (I Am Not A Comedian)
But I can see from your sig you paid CDN fees, so going with yesterday's close, you lose 17% credibility.
if it comes from Apple?

i spent many an early '80s morning trudging through the snow delivering papers to come up with the $1,200 for it and it's external cassette drive!

Does anyone have any suggestions?

It's called the earth... no software needed, just walk outside and experience it!

Coders write their code out on paper
Submit code
You key it in
Compile/run/return bug reports
Coders fix bugs
Repeat

kind of interesting, if you scan out 3 (or was it 2) clicks, you can see where they superimposed a new image on that corner of land.
You can see the different shadows and changes in the sunlight intensity.
