Actually, that title is quite accurate. They are looking for someone to ANALYZE Help Desk data, which is quite important in the grand corporate scheme (note I didn't say important in reality, but important to those looking to outsource, etc, etc etc). In the past, that title might have been more suited to someone doing tech support or working a help desk. I think the error was in the original titling, not the current. Just my $.02
People that don't know the area will only think it snows here (Rochester and Buffalo). What they don't realize is how great this area is. Granted, you can get 7 feet of snow in 24 hours, but you can also have winters like the last 2 where we didn't get 7 feet total.
I teach PT at a local college that uses this product. I haven't signed up for it as I thought it was clumsy and needless. For them to pull something like this, just further strengthens my desire not to use it and start asking questions why we do.
Can someone explain to me in simple English what is happening here? Does the camera just take pictures and then cut out what it 'believes' to be a license plate. then parse out the plate information? or does it reply on what is on the plate itself to determine it's target? does the officer have to aim it? or does it just read a location? like set it facing an intersection and read all the cars coming through?
just curious as the article doesn't say much beyond being able to read at acute angles. thanks!
Where are the Lawyers Who Lurk (copyright applied for) here? What are the possibilites that RIM knew of this guy? Let NTP think different, allow Mr. Wallace to dig his own hole deeper and deeper, settle the case, wait until all the NTP patents are thrown out and file a civil case where the monetary damages can be added on to by a group of jury members? Maybe even get some DA to file criminal for good measure? Just a thought, cause I would hope the company has someone who was paying attention.
Yes, piracy is illegal, but when caught and fined, isn't the American way to declare bankruptcy when you have too much debt? A bad credit ding is only on your record for 7 years. I think this could instill a sliding scale of when to chance pirating.
Junior --- 50% ---- 2 yrs undergrad + 2 yrs. grad, still old enough to not to be fatal, plus, you can get into more bars and record more music in person.
Senior --- 5% --- 1 yrs undergrad + 2 yrs. grad, you TA in most classes, get songs you want from Freshman, only pirate when needing to impress women with your hip music collection
I can say that I used P2P for music minimally back in the early 00's, but also have purchased only a handful of new CD since VERY early 90's. Stuck in a timewarp maybe, but have found plenty of legal ways to get/listen to the music I like. Click here for my shameless plug of Nugs.net
Please know that I think that declaring bankruptcy is a shameful way to skirt out of your responsibilities, I offer the above only in humor.
I'm in the market for a new phone. I know I need to get at a bare minimum a GSM phone to get on Cingular/Old AT&T.
What I'd like to find out is if there are any phones/devices out there that will hop on wireless networks (esp Free as in beer) to get out to the web? I want to be able to surf/check email/IM etc. and of course I want to avoid paying outrageous sums of money to said phone companies. Does this make sense?
I wonder how long it'll be until the job recruiters are outsourcing their positions overseas
It's already happening. I get calls all the time from people wanting to discuss positions in NYC with me. Of course the line is usually all static with a noticable delay and they never seem to comprehend that Buffalo happens to be ~430 miles (~700km) from NYC (via I90). But then, when calling from India and all you know about New York State comes from watching episodes of Friends, 'upstate' is only a quick drive/train ride away.
I went to RIT for Economics. Silly, I know, but it was 20 years ago, when I had to work the early shift in the VAX labs so I could play Moria before 8:30.
I've seen it mentioned before in this thread, ask and include students, you never know what will happen until you do.
I would believe it too, not out of logic, but government ineptness. Somehow, the Social Security Administration had TWO different birthdates for me in their system. Don't ask me how or why, but I spent hours getting it fixed.
Seriously, I can't even comprehend how this could happen, unless maybe I was placed in the witness protection program as an infant.
I think I would vote for this guy for president, just based on this alone.
You might get your chance. Disclaimer: I volunteered for Romney's failed Senate campaign against Kennedy and his gubernatorial (sp?) campaign while I lived in MA. There were always whispers that he had his sights set beyond Beacon Hill.
Don't worry about your one year at a company so far, people will understand it was your first job, you got your experience and 'want to find somewhere to build your career' (or at least that's a line that used to work).
Unless you're a lame NFL Head Coach who's original team fired your a$$, no one is going to come looking to give you a job. Stay up late one night, get yourself online and order and extra shot of caffeine in the AM.
I think the hardest thing about forcing standards is that they get in the way of actually writing workable code.
If I have to sit there and worry if I have added enough comments so Joe Firstjob can understand what I am doing, the project is going to be late and chances are I'll lost that train of thought that I was following to get through that function.
My usual mode of 'documentation' use real language function returnUserShoppingCart and variable shopperLastPurchaseDate names and add comments noting loop/if-then statments and anything I know I will need a refresher on. I also use comments to state why I did something that way, ie: business rule in effect as of this date, etc.
Your best bet is to know your staff/fellow programmers, learn their styles (or at least become aware of them enough to follow along) and make sure you have checkpoint/target status deadlines. The last to make sure you don't have someone writing 'hola world' for 5 months.
i like the idea of taking the time off and letting them see what you do. but i can see it (from the PHB/devil's advocate standpoint) backfiring since you didn't set the system up properly to run in your absence.
just wanted to thank you for putting so much time into your post. it's great to see that you enjoy what you did instead of just tossing back a lame (usually derogatory) reply. now I just need to figure out how to take everyone's suggestions and use them in my house (while appeasing the wife's sense of aesthetics, arguably the hardest part).
PLEASE STOP! You used LOGIC and RATIONALE to debunk an argument of the time change being "stupid". Next you'll want to show us actual numbers representing your views. Damn, I am too late.
Can we try not to be so biased as to post two totally different views? That was the classic detailed Windows view v. I'm sure the 'prettiest' mac view.
maybe bcgi should scour here to find something not 'obvious'.;-)
What would be wrong with charging by the rate of data flow? meter the bandwidth the calls use and charge that way? Is there a lawyer in the house? (shudders hearing myself asking that question) Could that be a way around the per minute stranglehold? Or does someone already have a patent on that while waiting to sic thier lawyers on infringers?

...since the early 90's when I would get booted out of Moria on the VAX at 8am when the professor's started loggin in to check email.

Plus, bars are open til 4am in some locales.

Freshman --- 95% --- 4 yrs undergrad + 2 yrs. grad, nearly clean credit score
Sophomore --- 75% --- 3 yrs undergrad + 2 yrs. grad, explainable negative action

i still have it, any suggestions on what to do with it?

do you have a resume loaded with all your experience ready? if so, spend the time to load it onto the following sites:
Monster
hot jobs
Dice
Career Builder
and www.yourlocalnewspaper.com

I hear the boats are slow getting there...
And it plays counterfeit DVDs that Sony players refuse to....
;-)
where can i get me one of those?

good luck!
This has to be the FUNNIEST post I have ever read here at /.
Thank You!
Please get it right. Al Gore created the Internet and is solely responsible for all the virii/spyware/naughty bits/etc that now spew forth from it.
