Actually, I had been waiting on an expiring domain (a fairly popular last name) for a while - and began it with a godaddy "backorder" $17.. Later, I read about how they were pretty worthless at this - and put orders in with snapnames and some of the other top-tier providers of this kind of service.... This morning, I had the domain - and guess who had managed to snag it first? Godaddy.

I loved ISDN when I lived in TN. It turns out that the big horror of dial-up isn't the bandwidth, it's the high latency. You cut that latency down to nil, and everything feels a lot faster. Plus, it's very nice to be able to use the phoneline and the connection simultaneously.

As a former ISDN user, I'd like to agree.. Except for the reliability statements. ISDN powered at the subscriber side is no different than my current Fios setup, which is also powered at my side. The Real reason that ISDN isn't more popular in the rural areas is that most of the time it is priced in a really silly price-range. $200 install costs and more than $100/month are not uncommon at all.

I ran a personal webserver/cvs server/mail server/etc on Qwest DSL for about a year and a half, even though their TOS expressly disallowed it. I'm currently doing the same on Verizon Fios. Verizon blocks port 80 inbound, so my webhop redirector points to port 8080.

The only company I've ever heard of around the Seattle area that expressly allows what you're talking about is Speakeasy. I'd keep them if I was worried about TOS.

I've been a huge e-book pundit since around 2001, so of course, none of this is "early adopter".. This device is nothing more than an attempt to sell the mainstream public on an overhyped and overpriced mostly worthless PDA.

Sure, e-ink is nice, and better displays are nice. But in the end, a standard LCD PDA display is just fine for reading. My current hands-down best ebook reader that I recommend to people?
The Palm i705. Yes. a 5 year old PDA w/ monochrome display, no wi-fi, an sd-card slot, and an IR port so you can beam books to other people's readers. I get about 100 hours of battery life out of a single charge, and this is an ancient frickin' PDA! Why so much battery life?

    1) No wi-fi.. Sure, it was designed to be used with Palm.net - which doesn't exist anymore. Turn that radio off.
    2) Monochrome reflective display.
    3) 33mhz processor.
    4) Standby mode is about as close to OFF as you're going to find these days, since PalmOS 4.1 is little more than a task switcher.

So, there you go. Spend $30 and pick one up from ebay. Install Mobipocket reader, and buy the latest Pratchett from mobipocket.com

Unfortunately, most of the USA doesn't have broadband. Once you get out of a city (any city - be it a city in the seattle metro area, or a city in TN) DSL becomes a non-option. Cable also becomes a non-option. What does this leave? Effectively: ISDN, Satellite, & Dial-up. ISDN is a non-option in most states, because of its prohibitively high price for what amounts to 15kb/s of total datarate. Satellite is even more inferior, for issues that have been discussed elsewhere - but can boil down to: Horrificly slow upload speads, downstream caps, & high latency. For joe sixpack in most places in this country, dial-up is still his only real option.

Btw, on a personal note, I lived in TN for 5 years recently and I was on ISDN. I recommend it to anyone that can not receive cable or DSL.. It's really not that bad. :) Of course, in TN, there was a class-action suit, and ISDN is affordable there, but I digress.

When I turned that sound on, I could definitely hear a very high pitched noise on the edge of hearing. It seemed irritating, but apparently not as irritating to me as to my 5 young children.. They all came running in from outside of the house and begged me to turn off that horrific noise. They described it as a terrible shrieking, like a girl screaming. They also couldn't imagine how I was sitting in the SAME ROOM WITH IT.

  19. Well, duh. I could have told you that on DVD Format War Already Over? · · Score: 5, Insightful

There's a simple rule to follow:
Is this all that much better to Joe Sixpack than what he had before?

Cassettes were better than LP's. Not in fidelity. But in portability, durability, and most importantly - the cost of a 'decent' player - Cassettes were hands down better.
CD's were better than Cassettes. They sound GREAT. You can skip tracks just like you could on an LP. They are supposed to last forever! (unlike those cassettes that by now you know simply don't)..
SACD... Does anyone have an SACD player? No! (Except niche enthusiasts). Because, to Joe Sixpack, it's simply not worth the money for an immeasurable (to his ears) difference in quality.

Same goes for video. DVD was a great upgrade from VHS. It combined the cheap player aspects of VHS with the hi-def of Laserdisc. Suddenly, everyone could have a GREAT copy of their favorite movie (as long as it wasn't starwars - a whole other topic entirely), for the output cost of about $50 for a cheap player. What part of Hi-def DVD is going to be any different than SACD or DVDAudio? Anyone?
