a lot of people dabble in js and get frightened away. this happens for a couple of reasons. first, the native dom interfaces are hell. anyone who writes a large amount of js code uses a framework to overcome browser differences and provide a more coherent API. the other reason people get scared is prototype based inheritance. class based inheritance is so engrained that people simply assume this limits the complexity of their code.

This document explains how to use the Summarize services available in Mac OS X applications.

If you have a long document, you can use the Summarize service to get a summary of the contents. For example, use this to get a short version of a long page on a Web site.

To get a summary of a document, select the text and choose Services from the application's menu, then choose Summarize.

If the application you are using doesn't support services, copy the text to a TextEdit document to get a summary.

Note: The information is this document comes from Mac OS X Help, the help system included with your computer. It is based on Mac OS X 10.1.2. If a different version is installed on your computer, choose Mac Help from the Help menu. Updated and expanded information may also be available in other Knowledge Base documents.

I just upgraded from a Drobo to a ReadyNAS NV+. I have to say that I'm very impressed. Its very easy to use, quite fast (up to 15MB/sec), and a regular linux subsystem if you care to tinker. The GUI provides the ability to share music and other media to networked players. Also, I'm a big fan of the built in bittorrent client.

A lot of programmers look down on it because of its poor start but in its current state its a perfectly capable programming language, even without superfluous v2 features. The biggest problem with web apps is supporting IE 6.

i took a look at SproutCore since i'm familiar with some Cocoa ideas, like data-interface binding, which would be great in javascript. i was disappointed to find out that SproutCore projects are created with RUBY and that you touch javascript very little, if at all.

just how important is ruby to sproutcore? go to their download link and they tell you to "sudo gem install sproutcore"

very disappointing for a javascript programmer. i suspect this will be the same.

javascript is the turkey lunch meat of programming languages, imitating all the others. and, like turkey, its best when its simply itself.
