In 2004 Slashdot featured an article that wouldn't be written for another year. They hail this as the end of dupes, as by the time the dupe comes out, the real article will be a year old!

    • When tech issues come up, I inform my less computer savvy friends
    • When the government has something screwy in the hopper, I write my congressman, and let 'em know how I feel

Are just two ways that I do this. If all you do is complain, nothing is solved, yet if you complain, and get yourself into gear, things work.

But: unlike most people I don't think politicians are evil assholes, suck-ups or idiots. I think they have mostly good intentions, but often select the wrong solution - not because of evil intentions, but because of short-sightedness, lack of understanding of consequences, wrong priorites, lack of respect for the indidual's right to autonomy and so-on.

I'd go a bit further. I just think that they're stupid. I don't mean as in "stupid head" or "can't even tie his shoes", but ignorant for 75% of the cases.

Think about it. If you had no computer training, no knowledge of how it worked, but did know how to legislate, this might sound like a good idea. I know plenty of people around me at school (students and professors) that just dont have a clue. I can tell them anything I want about buying digital film for that new digital camera, and they'd buy it. Is it their fault they don't know? No.

If you take anyone, and give them a bunch of different situations, they'll not know something, and that's how we get those crazy laws.

Bottom Line: The only way to improve politicians is to become one yourself.

Amen to that! On my drive back to school last night I had the same discussion with my friend that was with me. To sum it up, they don't know better, and will never know better, unless someone steps up and teaches them.

I'm surprised the teacher didn't get obfuscated codes, could'a been a fun way to practice for the IOCCC!

While it might not be smart, whenever I get assignments like this from my teachers, I always will write exactly to the letter. No one SAID I had to have line breaks at the end of a "line". So it'll be an 80 char row, no extra spacing. I won't go so far as to obfuscate it horribly, just take out the spacing.

I have have teachers give that assignment, and I've given them right back something in as few lines as possible. Most just kind of glare at me and grade it anyways, but one professor just laughed, realized his mistake, and gave me credit for the shortest answer, much to the chagrin of the other students in the class.

Dont worry, as soon as Firefox (which I'm using as we speak, this ain't flamebait) gets popular enough, people will turn their attention to it, and we'll see a higher level of exploits.

The easiest solution? If you're worried about your computer dieing, don't browse the web on an unexpendable system. This here is my "Internet and games" system. It's got Windows, and if it dies, there's nothing on it I need to backup, I just reinstall whatever I'm playing at the moment.

If you want to feel secure about your system, run it seperate from whatever is online, have a private (no crossover) LAN for work computers, and one for pleasure computers.

    That's the real solution

Exactly what I thought when I read TFA. So, Google will have their own Internet, that they control, on top of the real thing... Kinda scary that one company could own what we all know and love in just a few decades. Think about it. Every site you visit has been pre-cached to make it quicked, on google's servers. Every song you stream has been stored locally, on google's servers. Now, what about bank transactions? Paypal verified Ebay purchases?

Now, I'm a conservative, but a few more laws like the Patriot Act, and we could be in serious trouble if Google is forced to comply with data gathering laws.

In terms of backups, I never put all my eggs in one basket, I keep my data in multiple areas and mediums. There's no way I want everything online to rest on one person's servers. (Yes, I know the real internet will still be there, but I'm thinking about the end users "double-click IE and the internet pops up" mentality. They'll just use it as if it's the real thing and never know the difference.)

  25. Just to point out... on Industry Folks Talk Underrated Games · · Score: 1

The beginnings of CS were, also, "underground". From Wikipedia:

The Counter-Strike team was formed by Minh Le ("Gooseman") and Jess Cliffe ("Cliffe") in 1999. Counter-Strike Beta 1.0 was released in June that same year, followed by a relatively quick succession of the beta releases (by the end of 1999, beta 5.0 had been released). CS gained in popularity just as rapidly. The Counter-Strike team was acquired by Valve to turn the fan-created mod into an official mod for Half-Life. In November 2000, Counter-Strike 1.0 -- the first non-beta, official retail version of the game -- was released. The retail version was a standalone alternative that does not include or require Half-Life; alternatively, existing Half-Life owners can download the Counter-Strike mod free. Later, Counter-Strike was bundled with Half-Life and several other expansions in the Platinum Pack. The newest version of CS is 1.6 and was released in September 2003 through Valve's new distribution platform called Steam.

Nowadays, no, it's not underrated, but I think the lesson to learn from this is any game, even just a hacked mod, can become world-famous, and that all those "underrated" games might need is a little street team action, and showing your friends.

Having played a good deal of Half-life mods, when I ran a few servers/lan parties/scripted for clans, I can tell you that I personally think MANY are underrated. The problem comes when too many people latch onto one (CS) and thus ignore servers for other mods. Then, those mods lose support when volunteer coders see their work isn't popular. For some other really good mods, check out:

Basically, the point of this post is to say that, CS at one point was also an underrated game, and if you want something to be recognized as a good product, you need to take initative and get its name out there. Support the project financially, or bugtest, so the creators know it's wanted.
