  1. Re:Question on Usability Eye for The GIMP Guy · · Score: 1

This is only true to some extent. It doesn't make sense to have iTunes have multiple windows, because it's not an application used to manipulate documents. Photoshop CS2 on the other hand (which I use every day) continues to have multiple windows and floating toolbars under Mac OS X.

Generally when you click on an open Photoshop document, it comes to the front and so do the Photoshop toolbars. Photoshop documents other than the one you click on remain in place. Photoshop is not the only program that works this way. Dreamweaver, Graphic Converter, BIAS Peak and Final Cut Pro are some others that come to mind.

It seems to me that document-centric applications have multiple windows and/or floating toolbars. There are exceptions of course, but I believe that's the general idea, and it makes sense (to me, anyway).

On a Mac, floating toolbars instead of a "proper window" is standard interface design. Mac applications are supposed to be document-centric, not application-centric like Windows. For many people (myself included) this seems like a much better way to handle things, and better fits the original desktop metaphor introduced with the Mac.

Of course I agree that the GIMP needs some improvement in the UI department, but the floating toolbars are good, at least in the Mac version.

I get this question from non-ham friends a lot. They also like to answer a similar question, which is, "Why don't you just use a cell phone to talk to people?" My response is usually something like, why do people go fishing when you can buy fish at the grocery store?

Ham radio is a hobby. People don't do it entirely because it's a practical means of communicating (although it can be that in many situations), they do it because it's enjoyable. It presents challenges which take thought and skill to overcome. There's something about talking to someone on the other side of the world with a few watts into a homemade antenna when the band is noisy. Many people (myself included) love the technical aspects of the hobby. It can be a lot of fun to build a radio from parts, or experiment with different antenna designs. There's a lot more to ham radio than simply utilitarian communication between two people.

As a QRP operator, I love to go out into the woods and just sit and operate. There's something about just throwing a wire up in a tree and using a battery powered radio to talk to people all over the country and even the world. This guy has the same idea, although he's taking it a step further with internet access and data logging. The one thing I don't quite understand is how the internet access is going to work. In the block diagram, he's got a yagi antenna for WiFi, but that doesn't mean internet access will be easy every where. Up in the forests in the mountains (my favorite place to go with my radios), there are no nearby, or even distant line of sight WAPs. Satellite internet is an alternative, but as I understand it, it's rather expensive.

I'm not sure why this news is so big. It's even on the front page of Google News right now. Apple had an all dual-processor Power Mac lineup last year too. The re-introduced the single processor model in October, 2004. The fact that it's been dropped is not really too surprising. I wondered why they didn't drop it a while back when they last updated the rest of the Power Mac line. A single 1.8 GHz Power Mac is not a good deal when you can get a faster iMac with a better GPU, more features and a screen for the same price.

I'm definitely in a minority here, but I don't have a cell phone, nor do I want one. I prefer to be unreachable when I'm not at home or work. Too many phone calls is just annoying and distracting. Yes, I know I can always turn a cell phone off, but I would still have to pay for it, and it's simply not worth it to me. I do have an iPod, a digital camera, and a PDA, and I prefer them being separate devices that are very good at what they do, instead of mediocre at a bunch of things. If there are enough people like me, there will be a market for dedicated devices like the iPod and digital cameras.

As optimistic as my submission may have sounded, I worry that Microsoft will somehow make it so that "Metro" is hard for third-party developers to properly write support for. Microsoft can afford to do this, because the vast majority of people will just use whatever program it is that MS themselves provide with Longhorn to deal with "Metro" files, meaning it could be widely adopted even without excellent third party support.

However, if they make all aspects of it truly open, and it has real advantages over PDF, especially in consistency of appearance across systems, I'll welcome it.

This isn't really true. Any RF signal can induce current in nearby electronic devices, and those devices don't even have to be radio devices for interference to result. Even purely digital systems with no radio component whatsoever can be affected by strong nearby sources of RF. I don't know much about airplane instrumentation, but I would imagine some of it is pretty sensitive and could be fairly susceptible to interference from nearby sources of RF.

Mac OS X has a program called Disk Utility that lets you create, mount, and burn disk images, along with a bunch of other functions like hard drive scanning/repair, partitioning, formatting, etc. Works great for me. I use it to watch DVDs I've ripped to the hard drive quite frequently. As for your question about DVD playback, I can't be a hundred percent sure, but I'm pretty confident you could use AppleScript to control DVD Player (the standard Mac DVD playback software). AFAIK, AppleScript will allow you to access UI elements from within your scripts, so even if a program isn't written to support AppleScript extensions, you can do it yourself by accessing the UI elements directly.

I mostly work CW on HF, although I enjoy pretty much everything in amateur radio. I can honestly say that almost everything I know about electronics is stuff learned through ham radio projects.
