  1. variety? on Wal-Mart Enters the Used Game Fray · · Score: 1

Does this mean wal-mart will start carrying games that aren't hunting simulations? Deer Hunter, Deer Hunter 2, Deer Hunter 3 is about their entire stock of PC games.

I exaggerate, but not by much. What's up with the poor selection?

  2. Re:Please, don't ever let this guy write the law on What Should Be In a Technology Bill of Rights? · · Score: 1

Even in the US, there are regularly cases in which one must fight for one's civil rights, freedom of speech and otherwise.

  3. Re:Terms of Service on What Should Be In a Technology Bill of Rights? · · Score: 1

All contracts must be negotiable. None of this take it or leave it stuff from monopoly DSL and cable carriers.

  4. don't on What Should Be In a Technology Bill of Rights? · · Score: 2

If you make it general enough to handle even just basic human rights, it'll be vague enough to game.

If you make it specific, the fascists will claim that it's an enumeration of right and so no other rights exist.

You may recall some of these arguments from the discussion about whether to adopt the US Bill of Rights, or to simply let the Constitution stand on its own.

Also remember, the internet extends beyond just your country.

I agree that the mafiaa is chasing its own tail, but that doesn't mean they're not going trying to take the rest of the world economy down with them.

    MAFIAA?

though I think you meant {RI,MP}AA, or perhaps (?:RI|MP)AA.

  7. why ISPs might agree on Do We Want ISPs Penalizing Music Fans? · · Score: 4, Interesting

Clearly this is against an ISP's best interest, but here's a few reasons they might go along with it anyway.

    (1) Some ISPs (like AOL) are owned by the media bullies.

    (2) Larger ISPs have legal departments to handle the lawsuits sure to ensue. Smaller ISPs don't. Bye bye competition.

  9. centralize! on US Military Looks For Massive Spam Solution · · Score: 1

Oh yeah, centralize that. Good idea. Then only one system needs to be compromised -- I mean only one system needs to be defended.

Hmm, didn't somebody here mention people with guns?

And if you argue with a creationist, you'll accept their definition of "theory" just because that's what their dictionary says? One can draw all sorts of stupid conclusions from insufficient information. No, for complex topics like "theory" and "hacker" you need context and detail, neither of which is provided by a dictionary.

(sorry for quoting you out of context -- I just couldn't make my point otherwise :)

  11. abuse of process? on ASCAP Starts To Act Like the RIAA · · Score: 1

Isn't there some sort of penalty for abusing the legal process?

Even if the bar's set stupidly high (like for perjury) surely some of the SLAPPs should qualify for some pretty extreme penalties.

  15. privacy? what privacy? on Break-In Compromises 160k Medical Records At UC Berkeley · · Score: 5, Funny

So? It's not like there's any expectation of privacy. If the govt isn't expected to respect anyone's privacy, then surely one can't expect it of criminals.

    I wish that were funny.

There is that :), but I was hoping for a list organized to make their specific stupidities obvious. It's so easy to forget what exactly they've done while in office pretending to represent us.

  20. list of stupid politicians? on Bill Would Declare Your Blog a Weapon · · Score: 1

Does anyone keep track of politicians and their support for bills like this that are clearly intended to circumvent basic rights?

Such a list would help make sure I don't vote for any such incompetent and/or corrupt individuals.

  21. ebooks: less functionality for more money on Can the New Digital Readers Save the Newspapers? · · Score: 1

Why is it that I pay more for a book on kindle than for a book on paper?

What do I get for the increased price of an ebook? A paper book, I can give to a friend or trade at a used book store. I can't do that with an e-book. I can throw a paper book; I've learned better than to do that with an ebook. I can buy paper books anonymously, from whomever, and change vendors when they piss me off or get nosey. Ebooks are tied to a specific vendor, who has not demonstrated trustworthiness.

It's as though I pay more to rent an ebook than I would to just outright buy a paper book. Ebooks cost less to produce and have less functionality. They expect me to fall for that?
