What if I forced you to buy a car that only runs on BP fuel? The bundling in this case is you can't choose which OS you want, and if in fact you get them to unbundle it you still pay for the OS you don't get. This is the entire point of the 'Windows Tax' arguement. Once OEMs are compelled to unbundle you can begin to undo Microsoft's monopoly. I think you'll see more and more of this as EU and Asians nations want more freedom from control of the American Microsoft. I'd like to see that happen in the US market too frankly, so we can speed up the end of vendor lock-in on the PC platform before Microsoft can sell it's 'End User PC/console' in the next few years. 'You want a computer? You have a choice between an Apple and a Microsoft.' You might welcome that day, but I sure won't as since it'll be the begging of the end for some of us.

It is funny little piss ants on internet forums like to hype Wii, Xbox, PS3, etc. Everyone that's been in the industry hates reading forums and doesn't care about fourm input for that reason as well. Did you know a top requested fourm feature for a major RPG title was 'rape'. That's why we hire forum admins to clean your horrible ideas off, before you scare off our real customers. =)

I hate to break it to you kids, but most studios could care less about doing a Wii title. Do you really think every studio wants to sink a huge team budget into a title that's very low margin? If you're selling 'to the masses' you're developing for Playstation 2. It amazes me how the idiots on this forum don't understand the cyclic console cycle yet. I guess it proves most forums are full of 12yr olds and basset hounds that can type.

In fact the US will allow imports of such goods. I remember the idea behind patents, but now patents need to be more realistic with their time frames and perhaps a 'will to implement' or just go away completely.

It's a program that also scales with use. The eyetoy is a better controller than the Wii to me as well, since you can use your whole body. Like the Wii controller you might have to adjust your lighting for perfect useage and keep an area clear for movement. I also suggest getting a mat as well. I was a judoka for a long time, and I still get a good workout from this system.

Double clicking is something I didn't have to teach. Also this helps if I move them to a mac mini later. ;)

GNOME installs now come preconfigured mostly like this by default. I don't really have to do more than click some gconf options for an all new install for people to use a new 'customized' machine. Ubuntu can also be setup to guide them with application installs or security updates if they're more knowledgable. You can even setup autoupdates in the background, or auto download updates and install later.

I'm still pissed GNOME doesn't have a ink applet that works, so I wrote a newer one using mono. I need to clean it up and give it to someone to do something with it upstream. This year I've already got them a new box, which is an Athlon XP running Ubuntu LTS with their migrated /home partition. The typical tasks are browsing the web, writing documents for their church/recipes/etc, viewing and printing photos from yahoo email, and much more.

If you give them an old computer with Ubuntu 'pre-installed' they'll have an easy go of it. I don't even remember how many years they've ran Linux now. I do know they never got any viruses or had anyone break into their system from the internet. The only major problem they have is getting someone to help them install a new ink cart if I'm not around when the ink is out. I say Linux is a great first OS when you consider how great the USB camera support is these days! =)

Also you get "little miricles" sometimes. You'll be doing a test for some animation system or the like, and someone walks in and goes 'OMG WTF THAT IS AWESOME'. Then instead of a test you can end up with a new feature in the game, or in the extreme case of Devil May Cry -- an entire series can be born. It also helps with welding subsystems to have the 'owners' of each peice sit down and plan out wtf to do with them. Then there is the dreaded time when you can't see a problem, and all you might need is someone to come in and say 'hey why did you commented out this line?'.

Team work is important in software development, and even more so in games. You have to get art, design, and code all working together -- yes sometimes you actually need meetings.

Here's the best part. You can compile source packages from a i386 repository for AMD64, or modify the source for a special build. Just use dpkg-buildpackage to now build into a deb package. Now you have a new deb that you can share and it will work! It's very nice.

If you do modify source use the same patching system so you can contribute upstream. ;)
