The main reason I'm excited about Bluray is the Japan / US region are the same. I don't have to bother with working around the region locks anymore. I wanted to lend a disc to a co-worker, so they could get a feel for an art style. Guess what? I had to rip the damn disc. I couldn't transfer the ownership of that disc even if it's for a short time. Also I wonder with Bluray if some smart company will start offering rentals of Japanese Bluray in the US. I know in areas with large Japanese populations on top of otaku it's a no brainer!

Korean morality ( Those stuffy Christians over there shouldn't have fetishes! )
      Racism ( I won't even repeat the claims. )
      etc

The fun part is youtube has more and more non-english content. I've started to notice Flicker has several Japanese only comments too. I remember when "we lost Orkut" happened, and everyone should know why that happened. Orkut was a closed invite system. The population that invited the most could reach a critical mass with their language, and drown out the rest. Thankfully these newer web sites are open, so you can see various languages mixing. I find it refreshing to see several languages in one thread, and translations for the non native speakers of the videos / photos.

Not really. Think of all the people that might get a PS3 for the region free games, and the bluray that plays both Japanese and US blurays. Sure, it's not a large number of people -- however that's one household nintendo won't sell a console or games maybe for this entire generation. Having region free games is very important to me. I own more PSP Japan games than US. It's just great for people like me, and hell I can even write simple games and kanji practice tools for PSP. Hopefully PS3 'hobby SDK' will allow me to even add networking to simple applications and share them with others.

It also helps to be a privately held company.

  10. The problem is more complex on European PS3 Launch Delayed to 2007 · · Score: 1

The big problem is making sure the scripting work EVERY time on EVERY machine for EVERY play through the game. Prerendered cutscenes are more than just better looking, but they always are the same. All the people that bitch about no stories in games should realise how hard it is for scripters to do this. I worked on a major RPG title, and I'll let you in on the 'secret' that the scripters grind as hard as us programmers. I felt sorry for the guys, because they are very limited in what they can and can't do -- and they still have to make it always work. Due to the way games are rushed these days you can't make a full cutscene editor for them, so they're patching into AI systems, animation hooks, etc to make these artifical cutscenes. You can end up having months sunk into mintues of these in game cutscenes. I'd rather have more gameplay time investment for scripters, and more FMV cutscnenes.

If you want to tell a story with your game you'll either have to double the development time for the tools, or you can just do FMV with writers and animators having far less restrictions.

It seems a lot of people on internet fourms don't consider the possibly of the DS keeping the Wii market share low. There is a big difference with casual mobile and casual on the console. Also the recent Xbox Live arcade has more to do with the lack of titles than the appeal of the actual games. What happens if you can get the same title for DS as Wii? Which do you think people would buy? This is one of the ideas leading analysts to think of Wii as a '3rd place' in next gen. Once it gets down to the SNES and 'arcade' titles people will want to play those on DS more than Wii.

I guess I'll comment on the controller a little too.

Due to the legal issues with rumble functionallity, I think Sony wanted to add something back in it's place. Tilt motion is as good of a choice as any for 'replacement functionality'. The Wii controller on the other hand will have a lot more issues to deal with. Aspect mapping, distance from screen, and lighting issues affect if the control even works properly. I was told most of the issues for the Wii at E3 were due to not having each control setup for each person. The storage on the remote is supposed to keep this setup info for you, so you can bring it to a friend's house I guess. It's not the same using a device, seeing a demo, or listening to some moron from the press trust me.

It would be wise for someone that's not played either to not comment until YOU get hands on -- I'm talking to you Slashdot.

The only thing I didn't like is the game 'played it safe' in that you can't just loop-the-loop without pressing a button. I think they were afraid people wouldn't figure out to stop pulling back once they started to flip.

Kojima will be using this feature in the new Metal Gear, so I can't wait to see what he does more importantly than warhawk. I normally don't play flight games like that.
