Sounds to me like he's pissed off because one of the purveyors of services he contracted with turned out to have the same equipment he already had. At least, that's the only explanation I can find for singling out craigslist.

Why did craigslist have an "erotic services" section in the first place? To keep the pros from advertising under the dating and other inappropriate categories. Apparently McMaster would prefer all the pros call themselves "masseuses" and drive all the legitimate, trained massage practitioners out of the business. Or apparently he expects whores to adhere to a rigorous code of professional ethics, and only advertise in forums specifically designed for them?

I would caution that it does no good to try to bait McMaster into an argument about this; that would only get you categorized as a "McMaster baiter".

Congratulations, you've just given your pissed-off ex an excuse to have your sorry ass thrown in jail. I can assure you that is not a good thing!

Oh, and requiring a faxed driver's license accomplishes nothing. Every time I post random sex ads giving out my ex's phone number, I use pictures of women much hotter than her! (Disclaimer: I've actually done this zero times.)(It's not like pictures of hot women are difficult to find on the web.) So yes, actually using the contact information supplied in the ad to ascertain identity is the best approach. Now, if only I were a Yahoo or Craiglist employee, so I could give the vice cops and my wife a valid excuse to be calling those numbers...

  19. Re:Why not just change business model? on Why Bother With DRM? · · Score: 2

Except that game DRM usually requires you to have the disk physically inserted to play. So if you are playing on a netbook (they don't come with internal CD/DVD drives) or your 5-year old decided to use your disk as a frisbee, then you are screwed. All DRM that doesn't require a physical token to be connected to your machine is defeatable -- you can simply save the entire state of your machine and copy it to another similar machine. The DRM that does require a physical token sucks because, well, because it requires a physical token, which can be misplaced, stolen, or broken. Case in point: I installed The Sims 2 on a macbook in the (licensed copy of) Windows XP running under Parallels. It let me install the game, but refused to play. Why? Because Parallels virtualizes the CD drive! So because of DRM, I can't play a game which I have every legal right to play. As I've said before (about Sony's OpenMG): "The purpose of DRM is not to keep you from copying the content. The purpose is to make you pay for the same content over and over again." E.g. every time you sell, lose, or upgrade your current hardware.

So, should single player games simply have no DRM at all?

  20. Why not just change business model? on Why Bother With DRM? · · Score: 1

Why can't game developers just accept the fact that their software will be copied, and instead adopt a business model that is unaffected by unauthorized distribution of their software? For example, distribute the software for free via bittorrent etc., but charge monthly fees for connection to the servers? The shrink-wrapped software business is dead -- time to bury it. People need online access for patches and updates anyway; it is a safe assumption that 99% of your customer base has at least occasional connectivity to the internet. Also, first-sale doctrine becomes irrelevant if all you are paying for is server access. (There is a related issue that remains -- should accounts be transferable? If I grind a WoW character up to level 80, should I be able to sell it to somebody else?) Sure, there is a side effect that even single player games would require an online login. But I really think the software-as-a-service model makes a lot more sense for games than for businesses. Businesses are as geographically distributed as game players, and you really don't want a third party to have access to your business's data.

How is that "out of control". Harris fucked up -- he ran from police, either because he was carrying contraband or because he simply didn't trust police. The police fucked up -- they tackled somebody and unnecessarily injured him. In their defense, at the time they tackled him, they didn't know whether or not he was armed, thus for their own safety they needed to get him under control quickly. Finally, if the cops have to chase you, it gets their adrenaline up and generally makes them angry. Like most human beings, they make mistakes, especially in high-stress situations. Unlike most human beings, cop's mistakes can have deadly consequences, so we try to hold them to a higher standard. But the truth remains, they are human and screw up constantly, just like everyone else.
