After working in a university for 15 years and regularly getting 1-10MB/s and now working in private industry where we employ Infiniband, Gige and 10Gige these limits are horrifyingly slow to me.

It's never going to be cheap to maintain digital data. Unless you can afford a raid storage array, I'd just make sure I had a couple of copies on HDD (one offsite, of course). I put one HDD (500GB now) in my safe deposit box, and swap it with the up to date drive every month. I keep one copy of my data on my desktop, and backup on another box that I use as a pure backup server (no NAS, you just have to backup the nas).
When something comes along that will replace DVD-R, use that. Is BluRay enough of a leap forward? I'm not sure, a 1TB writable disk that lasts 20 years sure would be nice.
In any case, I think your DVDs should be your last line of defence. I don't trust them to not rot.

And they rush to release even though there are still major problems with the Master password dialog, that can be easily spoofed, or spams you on startup if you are reopening a previous sessin with HTTP authentication dialogs. And videotron does charge when you go above your monthly cap, and yes I ageee that it is entirely reasonable that they do so.
Bell was stupid to claim unlimited service, and then throttle when people took advantage of it. And now they have to audacity to say that they have to do it so that it doesn't affect their other customers, which is true and fine, but Bell *used* to claim that their service was better than cable because your neighbours activities wouldnt' affect your service, which was obviously bullshit then, and is now out in the open as bullshit. I hate Bell.
Until there is widespread adoption of public key crypto, we'll be stuck with this bullshit. And that will only happen when you guys start regularly using it. you do have gpg keys right?
