PC world are risking become as obsolete as the floppy disk, for much the same reason. The floppy was dead when the world got broadband, and moving small dishes of data no longer required magnetic tape.
Similary, PC world are being bashed by online stores that don't push bundled software on you. (I went in once, there were more ppl making returns than purchase)

This is the age old problem of explaining colour to a man born blind. Of course, he'd listen to you. Worse is the arrogant seeing man who demands you don't use the words radiation or wavelength.
The three colours we perceive arise from how our brain interprets the information from three different sets of light-sensitive cone cells in the retina that respond to different ranges of electromagnetic radiation.
In the dark ages, few people knew *anything*, and it was fucking magic. If you understand something , you are its master. If you use something without understanding, you are a slave to it.
To quote the article "And you can't fake an email address. No way." Dude, so that email from Nigeria|The Queen|Bill Gates|my bank was real?
You have a serious misconception about email. The from line is just a header. You can put what you like. The best you can do is to check the received header you can find out what server sent the email. For most spam the country of this server won't even correspond with the address. Putting the from line as a hotmail address is just a ploy to make it more credible (to some).
I don't get too much spam, but I get a phenemonal amount of 'message not delivered emails' from hosts to which spam has been sent with my address in the from line. I wonder what volume of email is just autoreply and vacation and undelivered mail.
Black books: "These books sir, are they real leather? I have to have real leather to go with the sofa. I'll give you 20 pounds for them." "Are they leather-bound pounds? I want leather-bound pounds to go with my wallet."
The ubuntu 'main' component contains ~1300 packages. These are the only packages available by default (apart from a very select choice of non-GPL software in the 'restricted' component), and the only packages that are officially supported. 1300 packages (one CD) just stretches to linux, gnu, x11, gnome, perl, python (and openoffice) - things you'd expect on every system. If you want anything else (and you certainly will), you can find at least 15000 packages in the 'universe' component, which contains the majority of GPL software in existence. This is the wealth of Debian. But unfortunately, these packages are not available by default, and are not supported. They're rarely updated between releases. This is sad, it's a waste of Debian's greatest asset.
Fedora Core contains 5 CDs of software (2250 packages) all of which is maintained by Red Hat employees and officially supported. On top of this there are 5500 packages in extras, which are avaliable by default, of equally good quality, and updated between releases. The only difference is they are maintained by 'the community'. Many maintainers were Red Hat employees anyway, which is one reason they've come to integrate the two. This means the next release will include, support, and provide updates for some 8000 packages.
I think Fedora trumps Ubuntu here. The wealth of linux is the vast quantity and quality of software freely avaliable. Distributors produce less than 1% of the distro, they just select some GPL projects and glue them together. This is why there's so little difference between Ubuntu and Fedora. The majority of code has been written by thousands of preceeding developers working on their respective projects who may never use either. Fedora is right to embrace the work of the thousands of free hackers, rather than deny the quality of their software because they can't control it.
I don't see cameras in public spaces as intrusive. They're not in our homes! I have the privacy of my kitchen for dancing naked, but if I were to dance naked in the street I shouldn't be outraged that people see me. When you are in *public*, the street or the park, you are in a space shared by society and you expect to be observed and accountable to those around you. Is the camera different?
>Kids are very smart... and I believe they would have little trouble dealing with a modern, full-featured UI and OS. So why the simplistic interface?
Give these to kids, and I'm sure in a week they'll have escaped out of the UI to a shell so they can send comprimising videos of their classmates across the neighbourhood.
Since when did so many ppl start calling Green Day and James Blunt artists? Before it was only people in the industry, but now it's filtered through the radio down to us. It's ridiculous, this ain't Pablo Picasso or Banksy we're talking about. It's a play by the RIAA to make people consider the creative talents of those divine people (jonny borrel, pete doherty) who make the music we listen to. And while we worship them, treating as gold their invaluable educated views on such issues as fiscal policy and nanotechnology, the RIAA will use their talents as justification to extend copyrights indefinately, and fuck with royalties for those less powerful.
When you say artists, I think you're talking about sculptors, architects and painters. Our english language has a word for people who make music: musicians (which contains composers, instrumentalists and singers). I understand there exist some genius (and under-rated) musicians whose fabulous talent is a blessing to our world, and deserve to be referred to alongside of da Vinci and their work compared to Guenica, but there is a lot of shit on the radio that is not original, made by people who are not talented. An excuse for music, it isn't art for sure.
To illustrate this ludicrousity, just go check out some profiles on deviantART (if you don't know it, it houses some fantastic photography, painting, sculpture and drawing). Read someone's profile and beneath "favourite styles of art: painting, tapestry" you can read on so many profiles "favourite artists: green day, fall out boy" , "favourite artists: james blunt, spice girls". It hurts to think about what these people were thinking they were being asked.
How about

Wonderful idea. A flash desktop. With the fantastic effect that as you move to the mouse the icons swim away from it.

Bonus points for the screenshots showing it installing a pirate copy of Vista too.

How can we look beyond what most ITicians are calling the Apocalypse?
Oh look whose blog has dropped off the first page.
You must be new here. (This ain't boingboing)
Surely we now have a Turing machine equivalent for webOS.
A sufficiently advanced webOS is able to run itself.
A "WebOS" is defined as "a set of applications running in a web browser that together mimic, replace or largely supplement a desktop OS environment."
How are you looking at this without using a browser? Or do WebOS include browsers. That would make so much sense.
You're only six illegal hyperlinks away from Genghis Kahn.
And Ajax is worse. Now I can be writing an email in gmail, hit back to check something, and bye bye everything.
Dudes, I think we have proof the tag system is functioning correctly, and should now be introduced for me.
What the hell are those commies terrorists corrupt mind-controlling federal overloads putting in the water in Boston? Seriously guys, chill out.
Now which of siteadvisor and Wikipedia would you say is more accurate?
