    During the interview for my current job as Linux kernel developer, my then-future manager asked me about how I would get my code into the official tree. I told her that I would need to prostitute myself to get my patches accepted by trying to understand what the maintainers wanted and doing whatever it took to make them happy.

    No. Mashups are clearly derived works, which fall under copyright quite clearly. Since this is in China, I'm pretty they're ignoring an IP laws and will probably get away with it. In the U.S., however, every one of those images better be licensed for royalty-free distribution, or they'd be sued.

    Since you seem to know so much about it, why not create a web site that does just this? Even if school teachers can't do it, enterprising parents would probably like to use your site as additional education.

    There's an idea for a startup - a company that creates additional homework for parents to give their children to make up for deficiencies in what their school teaches them.

    That's an interesting story, but it sounds like intellectually, he just barely qualifies as an aerospace engineer. I would not want him designing any airplane that I'm going to be flying.

    How would you feel if both of these emails ended up in your spam folder? You would not have noticed anything at all, but then suddenly, your account would be gone.

    Add 10 cents to the gas tax and be done with it.

    And in 30-50 years, when half of all cars are electric, would you be willing to accept a $50/gallon tax? What about in a 100 years, when all cars are electric?

    I have no problem with a mileage tax, but it should be using odometer readings, not a GPS system.

    That's true, but it also demonstrates the Microsoft's Linux developers are second-rate, at best. If I were a hiring manager, and I got a resume from a Microsoft employee who claims to have worked on the Linux kernel, I would assume that can't write code properly.

    I would rather see a software update that removes Amazon's ability to delete your books remotely. Until we get that, I have no interest in a Kindle.

    When was the last time you wrote a letter? Or bought a CD? Or used an old fashioned card catalog?

    The difference is that the replacement for these items are not DRM-encumbered. And before you go saying that downloaded music (the replaced for a CD) is DRM-encumbered, let me say that I only purchase real MP3s.

    The Kindle may have many benefits over a real book, but until Amazon removes all DRM, I consider it a technological step backwards, not forwards.

    What temperature declines? Here in Texas, we're having record highs. Two months straight of over 100 degrees every day. If there's a temperature decline, I'd sure like to feel it.

    Actually, I would hate to have a police officer standing on the corner. There's no crime near my house, so an officer is not going to improve things. Instead, he's probably going to get bored and spend his time trying to find me guilty of something.

    If i buy a car, i can't yank out the back seats and require a refund from the car dealer.

    If the back seats of the car are installed separately by the dealer, and there is a line item in the bill that lists a separate cost for the back seats, then you should expect the dealer to remove the car seats and lower your price if you ask.

    Looks like I need to dispel some of the FUD from this Sony fanboy. How anyone on Slashdot can be a Sony fanboy after their rootkit fiasco is beyond me, but here goes.

    What do you mean by "normal software"? I agree that the PS3 can browse the Internet, but I'm not sure that's so useful. The Xbox 360 can play DVDs, too.

    ps3 on-line gaming is free
    Xbox Live is far superior to the PS3 offering, and I pay only about $35/year. I don't *want* a free, crappy online experience.

    ps3 controllers are bluetooth and can be used on computers
    So? Why would I want to use my console controller on a PC?

    ps3 has much better hardware
    Excuse me? Care to back that up with proof?

    ps3 games can contain much more content .'. better graphics
    Overall, I believe cross-platform games look worse on PS3 than they do on Xbox 360. For example, Ghostbusters. But that's just minor. I have yet to see any single PS3 game that looks superior to anything you find on an Xbox.

    But he'll never be able to set foot in the U.K. again. I've never been to England, but I think losing the privilege of visiting that country would not be worth it.
