Just to set the record straight, Norway's internet offering leaves much to be desired. Sure if you're lucky to have fiber it's great, and fiber is becoming more widespread, but Telenor's DSL lines are generally massively overloaded. In many places very close to major population centers it impossible to even get DSL or cable, so you are stuck with satellite or 5 ghz wireless, both of which cost well over $100/month for any reasonable speed.
Mobile data coverage is just as bad, with many holes in 3g coverage even in Oslo metro area.
You can also use NTFS Explorer from the same company, which works great in a pinch. You can recover files one by one without having to wait for recovery of the whole drive. Well worth the $70.
Are you serious? Have you been around a construction site in the past 10+ years? Pneumatic air nailers are used almost exclusively , which are easily five times faster than a screw gun. The nails come in clips that can be loaded 50 at a time. Paslode even makes nailers that don't need an an air hose.
Uh, analogies are supposed to simplify what you are talking about. You, as inevitably happens after the 3rd or 4th analogy revision in a slashdot discussion, have failed miserably.
I just got access to google spreadsheet (signed up last night when I saw the story on msnbc).
First impressions: On a DSL connection (1500K) it is very responsive, I haven't noticed any lag at all. A quick look a the formula list shows that it supports most if not all of the formulas supported in excel. It has basic formatting and sorting tools, enough for most general use. (Text and colors, paragraph align, even merge cells. No conditional formatting as far as I can see.) It also has very nifty add and delete drop-down boxes, right on the main toolbar.
The one thing that is terrible about it IMHO is that it doesn't have an "autofill" like feature. That is there is no easy way to copy a formula across multiple cells. If they could add this feature, google spreadsheet could be used for probably 80-90% of what excel is being used for now.
Here's my take: I read slashdot for the discussion, and digg for the stories. Many times the stories posted on slashdot are a couple days old and seen before, but the discussion is more engaging and infomative then about anywhere else on the internet (I know that's not saying much, I can hear the quiet chuckles already).
The Discussion on Digg, on the other hand, is useless, but the cycle rate of stories is much faster, and there are more stories per day that interest me than slasdot.
If you don't have a gamecube, try out Fusion Frenzy on XBOX. It is an older game, so you may have to check the used shelf. It comes with about 50 different highly addictive party style 1-4 player games. No real 'gaming' skill involved, mostly just one or two buttons and the control stick for all the games.
Mod parent up. This is what everyone fails to understand about capitalism. It is not just by purchasing things that one participates, but also by not purchasing things. Well said.
and will eschew the mechanical click wheel in favour of a touch screen version
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Seriously, what are they doing, the mechanical click wheel is freakin sweet. That is IMHO the one think that put IPOD above all of the other music/media players out there. If they can find room on the nano for a mechanical click wheel, surely they can do the same on the new video model.
With some of its key breakthrough features gone, Vista's improvements include better handling of peripheral devices, such as printers and scanners, and cutting in half the time it takes to start up. Those are needed improvements, and there's no doubt that hundreds of millions of copies will be sold as people upgrade to new PCs. But the changes are hardly the stuff of cutting-edge software engineering.
Indeed. Microsoft is going to have to rely heavily on its marketing dept. in order for Vista to sell. I mean, seriously, what does it really have to offer that is a big improvemnt on XP, or even 2000 for that matter. Sure, the fanboys will all buy it becasue it is the "new and exciting MS Operating System" and joe sixpack will get it with his new computer, but what businesess will be able to justify the cost of a meaningless upgrade.
If MS is really going to be pushing better printer and scanner compatibilty, a new GUI, and faster startup times as the big features in Vista, they might as well just let all of their top programmers go to google and start hiring all of the top marketing people in the world to replace them.
"Faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen." (Hebrews 11:1)
This is why christianity cannot be proven or disproven by the methods used in science. It comes down to your personal relationship with God. For example, you pray for healing or something like that and your prayers are answered. And then it happens again, and your faith increases. And again, and so on. You don't need any more evidence than your own personal faith. You don't need some scientist or even a preacher to tell you that God is real, because you know it for yourself.
I am not trying to start a religous flamewar here, I am just trying to give some perspective from someone who does belive in the Bible to the people who don't understand this type of faith. It really is very simple, much more simple than all of the science that tries to explain the creation of the world.
Recently I bought a HP Laserjet 1012, which is not that much bigger than a good inkjet printer and reasonably fast (14 ppm I think). Toner is about $90 for a 2000 page cartridge.
You can do even better than that. I recently got a Brother HL 1440 from OfficeMax for $99 after rebate. It came with a toner cartridge that was supposed to last for 3000 pages, but it has gone 5000 already. I bought a new 6000 page generic-brand cartrige for $40 to use when the current one runs out.
A larger percentage of the market can mean more than a linear increase in profit.
Or a more than linear decrease in profit if you miscalculate and overestimate the demand for your product.
That said, I think that many people want a computer that Just Works(TM). If word starts to get around that Macs easy an unintimidating for novice users, than demand for Macs could rise very quickly. As of now, most computer users have no idea what Apple or Linux is, so there is potentially a huge market for Apple.
First, we arne't Bush bashing. He wasn't really involved with this bill.
What are you talking about? He signed the friggin bill into law! What are we coming to when Americans don't even hold the president responsible for bills he signs into law, i.e. this law would not exist without his signature.
Homer: "When you've got a bum ticker like we do, you need all the friends you can get. And Moe's is the friendliest place in the Rum District."
Homer opens the door. Moe is pointing a shotgun across the bar at the guy with the hunting cap.
Moe: "Get out and take your Sacajawea dollars witch ya. I'll give you till three" (he cocks the shotgun as the guy starts to run). "One." (he pulls the trigger).
so, accounting for inflation, this "0.5% raise" is an effective 2.8% drop in average IT wages. Just goes to show that statistics can say anything, but their meaning is often obscured.
Yes, many small businesses make email and internet services the responsibility of their employees. Basicallly if you want email or even internet sometimes, you have to provide it yourself. I have seen this often in small real estate businesses, where a realtor has a @hotmail.com address right on their business card. These people are not opposed to paying for better email than what basic hotmail provides.
I think these are the people who microsoft is targeting.

It's called an FM modulator, any car audio/electronics store should have them.

Sponges?
No, seriously, what New Orleans really needs is a couple of rolls of Burly (TM) paper towels. Burly to the rescue!!
I for one welcome our new SoIP overlords.

Just another example of an established company trying to push around the hard-working small-time developer. What else is new.
