  1. Lots of studies suggest that some of us do change on Study Says Your Personality Doesn't Change After 1st Grade · · Score: 1

It seems like the traits they chose attempt to cover a few different developmental lines. Perhaps this is just a semantic problem because there is much research to suggest some attributes of a person do change (see Ken Wilber, Spiral Dynamics, Jane Lovinger). The Spiral Dynamics map, for example states that along any given developmental line (cognitive, inter-personal, etc), while a person is at different levels on different lines, the development on a given line will always go through the same set of stages (a bold claim). The Spiral Dynamics studies suggest that 60% - 70 % of people are at 4th stage (order, structure, rules, duty) or below. According to Ken Wilber, it is not clear why some people stop developing at the second or third stage, and others keep moving up to 7th, 8th, and beyond. I guess the same dilemna is there with cognitive intelligence, why do some people have much more, and some much less. FWIW Slashdot seems to be somewhere between pathological Orange (stage 5, science, ambition) and Green (stage 6, pluralistic, care for those outside your class).

  2. Regardless, it is an interesting question on Churchill Accused of Sealing UFO Files, Fearing Public Panic · · Score: 1

Is there other intelligent life out there ? I don't know. However, some claim that if evidence of aliens visiting here presented itself, goverments would be unable to resist indulging in yet another coverup. The referenced story strengthens that claim. So I would not look to the government to just share what it knows. Would this coverup be 100% effective ? Likely not. It would start to leak here and there. You would have military and intelligence folks, astronauts and others, coming out with these "I want to say something before I die" stories. Which is what we see.

  3. It really isn't so easy on String Quartets On the Web? · · Score: 1

to find new artists or composers if you are into 20th / 21st century classical, or fusion/m-base/post bop jazz. For classical stuff I mostly hear of new composers on the Los Angeles classic station KUSC. Sometimes I stumble onto interesting stuff on Rhaspsody.

Nice to see there are a few other folks that like left brain music. I guess we spent too many nights performing pop music in bars and want to hear something different.

  4. OS, Office and Sever were already there on To Ballmer, Grabbing iPad's Market Is 'Job One Urgency' · · Score: 1

when Balmer took the helm. Imagine having billions at your disposal, having several chances, and still not being able to come up with a viable business. If the culture at MS could be changed, there are more than enough bright people there to turn their ship around. I wouldn't mind seeing the ship turn around, as long as the execs had to walk the plank.

  5. Cognitive intelligence is not the whole story on School District Drops 'D' Grades · · Score: 1

When I used to be involved in a lot of hiring I would routinely see hotshots hired who had no communication skills or self understanding. Then watch the resulting mess as these hires would refuse to cooperate and make enemies of co-workers and customers, and not know how to manage their stress. Check out the book "Emotional Intelligence". It turns out that SAT scores are not a reliable predictor of success. The cookie test (do I take one now, or wait a few minutes for two cookies) turns out to be a better predictor of success. The real crisis is that there is so little understanding of personal development, and people with the maturity of five year olds are routinely hired to be managers and leaders of companies. Ken Wilber has a lot of interesting things to say about this.

    hate-the-leader bandwagon

Depending on your current set of memes, you may have a negative reaction to inequality (liberal) or a positive one (conservative). Ultimately it is probably best to have no reaction and try to objectively evaluate the situation.

    the atonal mess

Some of us like this stuff. Try playing top 40 stuff over and over to help make it through college. Anyone with a brain will eventually want to hear some fresh and unusual ideas. Schoenberg, Bartok, Webern, Ligeti.

  8. How do they know it's not encrypted ? on Recourse For Draconian Encryption Requirements? · · Score: 1

Gosh there has to be at least one person on here wondering how they can tell if your drive is encrypted or not. Maybe a reg key, or an ioctl to the FS driver. Seems like there might be a way around this. Not that I am recommending it.

  10. 60 minutes - SNUS on American Lung Association Pushes For Ban On Electronic Cigarettes · · Score: 2, Informative

Anyone see the 60 minutes special on the SNUS ? After around 30 years, the European studies are rolling in and this type of tobacco looks pretty harmless. No lung or mouth cancer. A questionable uptick in pancreatic cancer, and slightly higher blood pressure. Tobacco without spitting.

  11. A lot of credentialed people have crazy stories on Professor Says UFO Studies Should Be Taught At Universities · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think this topic demands some rigorous scientific study. You look at the number of govt / intelligence / military industrial people / astronauts coming out with these "I want to say this before I die" stories, and it makes one wonder. Either they are lying, crazy, or telling the truth. I find it hard to believe they are all lying or crazy.

  12. Re:Companies are easier to regulate than governmen on NJ Court Upholds Privacy of Personal Emails At Work · · Score: 1

To my knowledge, At Will is the default employment contract in 48 states in the US. It can, however, be surrendered and replaced with another contract. Companies do this routinely by accident and that is part of the reason wrongful termination cases are still won in the land of At Will.

  13. Re:specifically on Will Australia Follow China's Google Ban? · · Score: 2, Insightful

The Tea Partiers are right when they say power corrupts and we should be wary of it concentrating too much in the govt. But why are they blind to the same thing happening with corporations ? It is just as bad or worse.

  14. Libertarian "do not transport" bracelets on House Passes Massive Medical Insurance Bill, 219-212 · · Score: 1

The govt could offer them. So when the libertarians are lying on the ground after a car crash the emergency personnel would know not to interfere with their lives. They could be exempted from having to buy insurance.

  15. Re:sue everyone on Company Sued, Loses For Not Using Patented Tech · · Score: 1

You have to consider that unlike some European countries, the US lets corporations get away with a lot more, and depends on the lawsuit as the corrective mechanism. I don't like it, but lawsuits are better than no corrective mechanism.

  23. My hypothesis on Brain Surgery Linked To Sensation of Spirituality · · Score: 1

is that a lot of cognitive activity creates noise that frustrates the 'transcendent' receiver. I can say from experience that successful meditation practice (where the mind gets really quiet) produces a vastly different experience of the moment to moment passage of time, than my normal consciousness. Perhaps increased intelligence means increased neuroticism, up to the point where you cognitively learn to turn down the cognition. Hence the athletes, coaches, woodworkers and musicians that strangely bring up Zen while discussing their work.
