The title of this story is a bit misleading. I'm not sure why they just don't cut off illegal copies completely. I'm guessing that the majority of people who hold such copies are also smart enough to use firewalls, etc.
Well I can understand as to why some of the games mentioned were banned especially the explicitly violent ones, but I'm not sure how games such as The Sims 2 or football titles are particularly bad in this repsect.
I'm not sure what State GeneralAdministration and the Chinesegovernment were thinking when they complied it but I think it might be going overboard to ban anything that contains images that even remotely suggest potential acts of violence where to overall focus of the game is opposite to that.
Right. Have you actually used this stuff in an actual application? And do you realize how slow it is to access texture memory directly through Direct3D's interface? If I remember correctly, it's especially painful if you have to do it when the data is not allocated system memory. Of course, I remember doing this on a Pentium II based celeron, which sees significant performace hits from high latency operations like this.
Until the newer version of OpenGL is available you're going to find most of the extra functionality through OpenGL extensions rather than the API itself, and any extension is not always guaranteed to be there. At least if they had some way to check for capability through the API (like Direct3D does) it would have been made easier on developers.
Most 3D APIs are good for doing this sort of thing. I think OpenGL would have been a better choice for it though. Although OpenGL is a little behind Direct3D in terms of standard features I still find that it's not only easier to use but generally much faster. I just hate being forced to put absolutely everything into a stupid primitive list.
Oh and I've found that Direct3D has major issues with modifying and accessing texture data directly, which would be necessary for something like this.
I'm sure they spent a lot more time trying to give the computer a 3D face than they did on the actual algorithms. Come on, seriously. Why do we even need that? Stupid publicity photos.
I know they're not linking directly but won't this kind of exposure have some sort of detrimental performance impact on their servers from the increased exposure?
Well ok, maybe over time it would help, but I can type pretty well as it is, and when I'm programming I don't need to go blazing fast either since I still need time to think about things. Another problem that a new keyboard layout won't fix: People who look and peck at their keyboards. We would need keyboards without the symbols printed over the keys to do something about that. And I do find it particualrly discouraging to see professionals who use a keyboard daily over years do this.
As far as I can tell, there is no perfect storage medium. The media that computers use to store data on are prone to failure and happen to model this type of deterioration - some data decays and becomes unusable over time while others are preserved. The main adavantage that we have is that that data in our brains last a lot longer than data on a hard drive.
I'm a little put off about how every single link in the article is pratically hidden.. The color used for the links is so close to black it's hard to tell and they're not underlined (unless you hover over them.) I'm seriously disappointed in their inability to overload me with information quickly.
I have a few problems with this. First, they could have put both versions of the software on ONE web site. I also like how the fact that the light version's web site mentions that it doesn't contain spyware but for the non-lite version, this fact is hidden somewhere in their FAQ. Not only that but the version that DOES have the spyware has a very flashy site, but I guess I can't complain about minimalism. Just seems like they're trying to trick people into downloading the spyware loaded version.
Another thing, I can't seem to tell what the differences between the two versions are aside from the fact that one has spyware and the other doesn't.
Since when do plain text files count as an "open format"? Is it just because someone hasn't tried to patent it yet? (probably)
Just seems a bit weird to me.

That's extreme spelled with an eXtreme? Ick

Nice icon. So that's where my mancala beads went..

Sorry for not being specific. By "they" I meant the sites hosting the actual video content.

Do not export to China!
This is really Microsoft's Anti Virus software initiative

And as long as we're talking about "memory stick"..
I *was* using SSH until someone found it on port 22 and was probing it non-stop for days. Time for a reconfigure.
At the end after the computer finished talking it looked like Jobs was about to explode or die of laughter. His face was very red.
I really don't think this a valid point seeing how it only happened once and in this specific situation.

I also liked how my ANSI animations ran really nicely on a 2400 bps modem but ran too fast on anything higher.
286-DOS
Funny yet horrible at the same time.
Two words that sound the same ("wether" and "weather".) Mistakes follow.
Guitarbot could have used some of those long, thin metal arms to pick its strings with. Now that would have been worth looking at.

Exploding remote controlled bicycles! They'll never know what hit them..
