    Believe it or not, Microsoft is a pretty tolerant company on the inside.

    They do sound pretty open. Compared to say Coke, who will fire employees for "violating a policy prohibiting slander of Coke products", aka drinking Pepsi or eating at a Pepsi owned fast food chain.

    Right, tax credits only really mean you don't have to pay tax on the money you have given to charity. In Canada you get a credit of 15% for the first $200 you donate and 29% for everything above that. 29% is the highest tax rate. So if you are in that >$126,264 bracket you actually pay $28 tax more by donating x than if you where then making x less income. People who say "personal donations are just write offs" are clueless, unless of course the person is involved with the charity and is getting some sort of kickback. Oh and in Canada you are only eligible for a tax credit on 75% of your income. So if you were to donate 100% of your income the government still wants tax on that last 25%.

    I wish I was making this mistake. The speedtest.net tests are in Mb not MB. Just checked again ... 1.01 Mbps down / 0.26 Mbps up from my 15/1 plan ... yes I went back up.

    What is even more pathetic is thats likely even with their 'powerburst', which is supposed to "allow you a 20 second burst of download speed by temporarily increasing bandwidth"

    I live in San Francisco, where Comcast advertises 8Mbps. We actually get 1Mbps down.

    I have Shaw in Western Canada and its much of the same. I have a 15 Mbps speed, but I get speedtest results of around 2. Where it gets really corrupt is that when I downgraded to a 7.5 Mbps plan ... because I was only getting 2 ... my speedtest results were cut in half to just over 1 Mbps. Meaning their advertised rates aren't even their real upper limits. This should be criminal.

    My dental is like that. I have coverage through work, but only 66%. Its actually cheaper for me just to pay cash than the remaining third, as the all the dentists charge insurance almost five times as much as an individual. The small company I work for is looking at dropping our company dental and just having us claim through accounting for anything under x dollars.

    Who had hacker movies in 1960? Can anyone name a hacker movie off the top of his head before War Games?

    The Original Italian Job from 1969. In that movie they hack the traffic computer in Turin to create a traffic nightmare allowing them to escape in their Mini Coopers.

    I've never understood why there is all this comparison to netbooks. The iPad isn't really competing with the netbook market at all. Its a new advice with a different target market and different feature set. All this comparison is like saying "A Dodge Caravan is go much better than a BMW Z4 Roadster. Its less than half the price, has three times as many seats, a built in cooler and a DVD player for the back seats. Why would anyone buy a Z4 when they could get a Caravan?"

    I would guess the difference in that stat is the difference between European and American Culture. In North America its easy to predict when people will be at work and sleeping, or about 66% of their day. In Europe, in my experience, you can also include three hours every night out at the local pub, or 80%.

    Does anyone know if ESPN will have the World Cup in 3D? I know 32 games will be in HD, and ESPN will start broadcasting in June, but nothing I have read had connected the two other than speculation. As a Canadian, I need to know if I need to get a grey market dish.

    I for one am very excited and plan to be an extremely early adopter.

    I have often wondered about the legality of this. Mostly because I have a very large vinyl collection. The RIAA and MPAA are always saying that you have bought only a license, so if I own lets say [i]Meddle by Pink Floyd[/i], I download a copy off some ftp, get caught and it goes to trial. Can I make a defense that "I have a license here, check out the cover art"? Also my PVR from my crappy Cable company, Shaw, often forgets its a PVR and doesn't record what its set to do. Meaning I end up downloading them. Do I have a defense there?

    Aslso I hate Blue-Ray disks with Digital Copies. They always end up costing $10 more than regular Blue-Ray disks and to give me something I don't want or have any use for.

    What it is saying is that you have an obligation to pick up your phone and call someone about it. Is that really too hard?

    Yes, because of the stupid laws imposed on mobile phones that force them to have a loud distinct noise when you call 911. You simply cannot call the police without alerting everyone in the area. I once tried to report a domestic when a huge guy was pushing around his tiny girlfriend after the bar, and almost got myself flattened for the effort.

    Really? I have found the multiplayer is next to impossible. You just end killing each other. The more players you have the harder the game becomes, even when your not trying to do each other in. If you try t kill each other, its hard to get anything done.

    Looking at the Seattle map one interesting thing stands out for me. The rentals in the zip code of Seattle University seems completely different then everywhere else. What is interesting that ' pseudo intellectual' movies that you would think would be more popular, Milk, Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, are relatively low in this area of learning, while mindless movies, Role Models, House Bunny, where the most popular.

    Same at my work, except the exciting foreign places are places like Edmonton Alberta in the winter. And normally the 'perk' is having to leave town for an undetermined amount of time with a couple hours notice.

    The thing that always gets me in trouble is getting a town car from the airport. I only do it when I know its cheaper than a taxi, but the accountants are always creating a fuss about it. Even when I submit a bill for both, and and the towncar is cheaper than the taxi back to the airport.

    I've always thought of Border Security as people who couldn't make it as Cops. In Canada there is a bit of a fuss because they want to arm themselves. Which simply scares me.

    I have a HP Elitebook that is roughly in the same class as the Thinkpad only without the second monitor. After I installed Windows XP 64, and replaced the graphics card drivers with the CUDA drivers I get a whopping 32 minutes battery life.

    On my Blackberry I can almost write an entire email without looking. I normally glance about once every sentence or two. That said when I get distracted or drunk this gets extremely screwed up. About once a week I write a message where somewhere in the middle I end up with every character being shifted one key to the left or right. Only once have I managed to send one of these messages though.

    I had a iPhone for a few weeks and personally couldn't get over the lack of physical buttons. But thats just me.

    Also because of their size people have a tendency to transport them in a bag that is less supported. Most people carry their Laptop in a proper bag or a Targus backpack, where as its not uncommon to see someone carrying their netbook in their purse or messenger bag.

    I agree. I have season tickets to the local 2nd div (USL D1),4th div (USL PDL) and 5th div(PCSL) soccer teams, as as my local 3rd div hockey team (ECHL). I also try to go to all my old University's Soccer games (I still live in the same city). Although because of the other games I was only able to catch a single match. I also have traveled to four games out of country this year, and am going to seattle next weekend for the MLS final. I still play league soccer and the odd fill in game playing hockey. I have a sailboat and go out about twice a week, and try to hit up the gym three days a week. So yeah I might watch a dozen games a week on tv, but I think its fair to say I'm not too lazy.

    For me I will never give up cable until I can get sports with the ease and quality that I can on my TV. Sports really need to be watched live, and unless streaming makes leaps and bounds the internet is not going to catch up with HD TV anytime soon. I always find that on the internet the term HD is used very loosely. HD movies on Youtube don't compare to cable, neither does a single TV show downloaded with bittorrent that is labelled "HD". I have seen some "HD web streams" and they are ... if your lucky ...the same quality as digital cable.

    Don't get me wrong, I hate my cable provider with a passion, but I can't give them up.

    Well, it's a teaser. It always amazes me at how advanced the Germans and Japanese were in some things, and just how arrogant and stupid the Americans were.

    And still it was the primitive Russian Army that won the war. Technology is great, but in no way a recipe for success. Same still holds true today.

    On June 20, 1942 a submarine also attacked a Lighthouse in Vancouver Island in British Columbia. It is the only attack on Canadian soil since the war of 1812, and I believe the only one since. While the attack was pretty useless it did cause all the lighthouses off the coast to be turned off.
