I think convergence is what's is prompting this. Imagine making the iPhone/iPod Touch a portable gaming console. Remember when we used to carry a cell phone, iPod and DS? Millions of you already have Apple's gaming device in your hand. I can't see any sense in Apple coming out with a dedicated gaming device.
Also, I was browsing the AppStore last night and noticed a couple of games that were previously only on the Nintendo DS (Cooking Mama being one). The graphics/gameplay were identical if not better.
It's just an initial take, but so far Safari on my XP box feels about 30 times faster than my OS X install. I don't know if that neccesarily a good thing.
Hey Apple, how about showing your core users some love?
you install the new Windows OS and its like your hardware is brand new.
i'd mod you insightful purely based on the fact that you have a 4-digit userid but this comment stumped me. either that or it must have made it through my sarcasm filter. In most cases Windows won't even let you install on older hardware.

You're exactly right, I'm not a huge fan of the mini but the casing was well-designed. Unfortunately, a near bulletbroof outer layer means you keep your iPod for much longer since there's no visual aging to remind you of it's age.
A year ago, people were saying that most people who wanted an ipod already had one, I think the nano is gonna prove that wrong. But those people who do own are still a key market for Apple and the brushed aluminum was unintentionally extending the buying cycle of current iPod owners.
I highly doubt that will ever happen. The great thing about scratches (for Apple anyway) is that it gives the device an appearance of wearing. Without the scratches, there is less motivation to buying the latest.
Scratches also make new iPods look that much shinier. I fully believe one of the driving forces behind replacing the mini was that's it's case was too durable.
Market: "The iPod mini is a bulletproof device. The casing, unlike the rest of the line is durable, extremely scratch resistant and keeps a boxfresh look for years!"
Apple: "Ok, we gotta get rid of this top-seller. People are not buying replacements. By making our devices scratch-prone the aging process is accelerated, though only superficial, thereby further enticing the consumer to upgrade with each new release!"
easy..total up the discographies of Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Bob James..okay I realize it's all about preference. But the more I listen to, the more I realize how much good music there is out there.
Interesting thought but I doubt it since Motorola is the manufacturer of the phone.
What's also interesting is how they'll NOT bite into sales of a comparable sized iPod. Throwing 512MB or even 1gig is inexcusable given the lowered costs. But how do you sell a Shuffle when the customer can now fit more on their cellphone??
This was exactly what I was thinking. I'm sure there are a lot of people who can afford to upgrade often, but among the console gamers I know, shelling out the $300-400 every two or three years plus games is all they'll spend.
The problem is when it comes to gaming we're used to having an equal experience at a fixed cost. Throw in some better models and me and all my cheap friends are gonna hold out for the good shit.
While you're completely right that nothing beats free, you can't deny the number downloads iTMS has garnered since its start.
While free music will always be available, don't underestimate the 'guilt-free' factor. A clean conscience for 5 cents/song is about as good a deal as you can get.

The Zune has 10% of the hard-drive based mp3 players, which itself comprises just a fraction of the mp3 market as a whole.
for a slashdotter: 'ex', 'girlfriend', and the 's' at the end.

It's so crazy it just might work! NOT!
yes.

Competition is always good, but Google is on it's way to making the old business model obsolete and I have no problem with that.

I think the similarity is intended. Once the video ipods come out I can see this blowing up large..
True enough, write times aren't there yet. but once they do catch up the simplicity of the flash design is much more desirable than reading discs.
