  1. Don't confuse Nokia handsets with Nokia. Nokia itself is alive and well and had about $25 billion in revenue last year. The handset business was spun off to Microsoft because Microsoft was willing to write a big check. Making money on handsets is pretty hard if you don't have either a walled garden store (Apple) or make the actual components like processors, memory, screens (Samsung). Otherwise margins are very thin relative to Nokia's actual network products aimed at carriers.

Spain is trying to maximize the tax revenue, Google is trying to minimize the tax expense. Normally that wouldn't be a problem but tax law is so complex that there are wild differences between that min and max based on buying things in the right places, registering things in the right way. If tax code were simpler the difference between the min and max would be smaller and people wouldn't get so bitter about this shit.

You can't get that because it's not how DSL works. ADSL has dedicated frequencies for upstream and down. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
With those speeds though, you're probably on ADSL2+ which has more frequency available downstream, but basically the same upstream max as ADSL.
VDSL2 could support higher down and upstream speeds, but Fairpoint would have to change out the equipment on their end and that would cost a lot more than $30,000. Depending on the vendor and size, a DSLAM can easily get into six figures just for the hardware itself.

Also, fiber's just as durable as copper and is frequently buried in conduit in urban or storm prone areas. The only downside is that it takes a little bit longer to repair if it does get cut.

To the user it's an old school 2 wire POTS line. On the network it's just SIP traffic on a separate VLAN. However, Google currently uses some kind of home grown ONT that's just a simple single Ethernet port encapsulated onto the GPON WAN. More complex ONTs can do POTS, Ethernet, T1s and RF video from a single device.
