Your post is informative, sometime good to see here as lately its been missing quite abit. I read that article and I understand (Im sure when I was a kid I would have tried to pull that just as well lol). I would so be playing H2 between everything else I do, I tried Halo on the computer didnt like it so, then tried H2 on the 60", made a big differance, but being the typical Aquarian I am, I was bored quickly with it, so tend to jump between games a good bit.
If a large company can sell you the idea to buy something because it can do a bazillion more things, it will try to, its up to you the consumer to figure out whats good to purchase and what you will just end up losing your money over.
In the nicest way put, your post is offensive to the gamer moms. I can understand why you stated what you did, but did you re-read to see if what you wrote would be offensive to any others, the actual post answers no.
I am a gamer, and I am a mother, now you know one. I was a gamer first and a mother second. You have no reason to be offended if they are targeting 'gamer mothers' when most of the time its the parents who are freaking out over the differant rated games their child are playing (think back to why alot of games are being re-rated nowadays). Yes mothers do alot of work around the house, but many of us still game.
There *ARE* gaming mothers out there, do not think we do not exist. Mothers do alot of things, and usally run on low sleep and low fuel but still get everything acomplished thats needed, gaming sometimes is just an extra and sometimes its something to share with your child. Im sure if you enjoy gaming as much as the most I know do, and when you become a parent, you will still try to squeeze in some killtime (good way to destress after a long day).
Maybe your friends had a hormone imbalance, but being a mom never stopped me from gaming and I never got 'weird'. If you are losing touch with your friends just because they change after becoming a parent, I think you have some serious issues. There is a differance between gaming for fun and making it your entire life. Your post makes others think how much you care between a game and a true friend.
And again, as most of your thoughts on your post, not every mother wants games to be off the racks at stores. From when the news broke over the grammie with the issues of re-rated games, I had replied this as the topic off a friends forum
http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/fun.games/07/27/game. lawsuit.ap/index.html
If she cant read the labels, its her own damn fault. My son more than likely would not be playing this game (or something like Leisure Suit Larry) until he is mature, and seeing his father..........not any time soon. She needs better judgment, and abit of comman sense. I think pretty soon, it will be like the old movie rental places, where there is the family section and the adult section, if not....its going to be damn hard to find some of the good games that most mature people I know now play. Im pretty sure if it were up to ole grannie here, none of the PS2 games that many (myself inculded) play would be legal anymore. For now though, grannie shall not rule this castle and all the 'scenes' are free on our 60" tv.
I really think you should word your post' with abit more tact. You have insulted numerous females I know, and besides it being flamebait, it makes it look like a 2nd grader wrote it, with the thoughts of a very selfish and egotistical person.
So heres the thing, lots of people game, do not stipulate that just b/c someone is a mother (what about fathers?) they dont game. Our 60" here proves all in the household love to game. I think the Xbox and the PS and everything else (besides the 4 computers in our office) show that much.
Now, back to the article in hand.
They are targeting for the same reason any smart company would: to pull in what customers they are lacking. Its not a stupid idea, for the most part, it would have more people gaming, so what is wrong with that? Alot of females play scarce from the geek/gaming/cars/anything else male dominated world.
Why would anyone be upset that more people are gaming, if anything (think from the company side)
- more sales
- more customers with (hopefully) more demands and suggestions to better the product
= more games
Anyone see something seriously wrong with this? If you can game (and your not an attention bag just looking for some people to 'wow' at you), bring it on, the good ones always love a nice challege. As stated here: http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=164784&cid=137 54203
And yes, Im a mother......and?:D
hehe I cant not game on the 60" tv here, I might die if something happened to that tv...
Yea, most females that are all *whatevernickherenad grll at the end* they just ruin it for the good ones no doubt. Im sure alot of them just want to be seen as a girl but are going about it the naive 16 year old way......without thinking before acting when choosing their handles.
Well if you really wanted a cheerleader, I would probaly tell you to go find one, Im not her, I would rather rack up some kills than play with pompoms.
And no, thats a case of a wannabe girl gamer that just wants to hate on people and be an attention *****.
I prefer to avoid most all sites/ircds/games/etc that have any type of attention'rs around......I was just recently ban from a site for stating that females like that give females like me a bad rep.......then again it (by all members including in the thread fight out) went over the line, I apologized for not taking it to a pm, no others were ban, and now I still receive email updates from them, stupid attention'rs:D
If you mean every female that games, your wrong. If you mean just a good % I can agree with that. If you can gather up all the females you know that game to game and not game to be 'Ima chick playing the boys games', then I will happiley put up a page on my domain and add myself first.:D Good luck hunting, their are not that many of us (that are good) willing to broadcast it w/o a idiot man assuming we cant back up our skillz.
Whoever said:
Can you just discuss things like normal people? We get it. You're women. OMG. Stop discussing how dumb women are in games. Stop discussing the 'female point of view'. Just talk about the games like other columnists. It's women like this that are alienating themselves from the culture, not the other way around.
I dont think it could have been put much better, and I would never join a clan called PMS anything. Those women also make it *so* much harder for ones like me that just want recognized as a female gamer.
No, I dont think most female gamers are lesbians, or transgender, a good % yes, more than 50% I doubt it.
I am neither, but when I am online, I hardly use the talk feature, I dont specify Im female b/c thats not the point of the game. And yes, the girlie girls that are all 'ooo look at me' do ruin it for the rest of us.
I still am female, I just dont broadcast it (and most never know the differance), I dont go 'O look I killed it' or 'eww thats nasty'. I dont flirt or expect a game area to be a chatroom base. I dont get freaked out if I break a nail when playing, and I dont just say I game to get points with the male gender.
I game to game, to kill, & win.
Said best: The player with the most frags wins.

I have no sympathy for people that dont sign up for the DNC or the ones that lie about it telling companies their already on it and still bitch about getting calls. I used to work for afew telemarketing places (all but 1 were legit and we not trying to sell anything). Most people in the call center are nice, but sometimes you get the jerks on the line. My sister in MD when the Baltimore Sun calls here, she just replies that shes blind and needs it sent in braile (sp). One of the worst things (company calling side) is when people sign up for lets say a new car to win, and everyone in the household applies, that could be up to 4 or 5 people in the same house (and you wonder why you get numerous calls, their all put into the dialer as a seperate person!). Of the few best things I have heard when working in the call center:
-For National Geo (the thing when you call to order via tv, and this coming from a really old lady)
OMG MY TVS ON FIRE YOU HAVE TO CALL BACK SWEETIE (while you hear a really bad BOOM in the backround)
-For ITT Tech (call setting, I was verifying this call that a coworker had taken)
A man who originaly called to set a time/place to go visit a ITT campus, decided to have a 'little fun' with my buddie Sarah, he continued to *ahem* Jacket (quite loud) during the call, and ended the call with 'you sat through all of that, I will need you to call back sometime honey', rofl, that was funny shit, esp. when our branch mngr came it and refused to keep the call (the rep lost the sale) and the call was remoed from the company listing to prevent whatever would have happened had it taken the sale legit.
-For Concerned women of american
A kid answered the phone, asked to speak with said parent, he put rep on hold for awhile, came back and said 'My parents are having sex on the living room floor right now, please call them back later'.
lol
I have called for alot of companies that were legit, and worked for only one that wasnt. I left b/c it was a POS company to start with, changed its name numerous times (I think in 20 yrs of being around, atleast in 2 months, 4 names)........dont EVER sign up to win a car, BAD MAMMA JAMMA.
Needless now, I dont work in that field, but I found numerous laughs along the way, so I dont feel any pity when someone talks shit to a caller, I have heard just about everything. When someone calls here (quite rare, its Sunrocket and so far *fingers crossed* not sold our info) I ask them right off the bat what do you want and how did you get this number. For the most part, in 4 months about 3 calls, its someone from a actually bank that we use (who sold our info), and we tell them, DNC dont make me fine you. Thee end. Not that hard right? And yes, whoever posted if you just hang up = call back.
O so true, lol. It only takes a second to tell them not to, why are you people so damn lazy, its your phone line!
While Im happy that Quantum Leap somehow made it, since so many others did not (we have an almost all Sci-Fi request in our house), it bothers me that a non-sci-fi fool made this list.
Maybe we should find him and send him to a far far away mean mean place....

I think if we need to define something that we already know what it is, we have some serious issues on hand.
I was once 'a girlfriend' I have now moved up to 'a fiance', but besides this all, I love to game, I refuse to not play PS2 atleast 4x a week, Im always the one going 'honey, but but I WANNA PLAY'....I seriously dont think it has anything to do with grip, rather than preference. If I wanted another remote in my home, I would go buy one. My mind works one way (Im sure the guys can relate) but Im speaking that mine works in the gaming sense, all my fingers know what buttons to hit when in need, I dont need to change that. I know sometimes change is good and Im willing to try, however I do not see myself loving this new controller.
If you (RIAA) do not throw me in jail for music I want on my computer (non-cd) and let me keep the music I wish to listen to, while being able to download at somewhere, somehow the other music I want....and I will post a banner on my domain about your awesome music with reveiws and yelling at people to go buy their CD, pending they dont have their own computer. FREE ADVERTISING.
Im a geek, I dont listen to music anywhere else, possible once a year thru the stero in the living room speakers, I dont have a CD player in my car, and even if I did, I would rather have a computer playing it (It would be free, I am a cheap bastard).
Mondays epiphany, Thee end.
I understand that the sales side wants to do everything possible to keep the customer, and even sometimes using the less of moral ways to do so, but it is the customers job to listen to what is being said on the other side of the phone. Alot of call centers will tell all employees to use LAST as a way to stop a problem from becoming a compliant or cancelation (Listen attetively, Apologize for the inconvenience and express concern, Satisfy the customer and add vaule , and Thank the customer for taking the time to speak with you and the chance to make things right).
Many companies that either do out sourced work (like one of my last) will go through a script so that everything is in place to make the sale, the workers are trained with constant rebuttels for just about anything you can think of, and if they cant answer, they will direct you to someone (another dept.) that can. If you dont pay attention and you dont listen, and you do allow the (sales rep/cancel person) to take over complete power to the call (which is their traning) then your screwed. They will talk fast, assume you have no questions and are not listening. Not always is there fine print, which I can understand, but when you are being charged for something and you have no idea why, assume its because you didnt pay attention in the first place.
No, I am not a aol sales rep, but I have been in sales for way too long and seeing this as just the companys fault is just a lazy answer to a huge problem that most just dont want to admit their own fault. Yes they will coax you into something you dont want, they are in sales, and just because you think this is immoral for someone to work for a cancel dept. thats your opinion, but as mine in the past, I was just trying to support my son on a 1 person income. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, just make sure you are awake and alert when its all going down.
I completly understand, I did telesales for quite sometime, and when my sons father and I spilt, I was forced to pay new bills with whatever means possible. I heard tons of stories about people wanting to cancel and were unable to. At one time, Time Warner hired a company I worked for (who also did jobs that people who just had kids, their hospital pictures....addresses/names were sold so we could send them 'baby toys'), Aol just hired us for a survey call, but it uped my rate an hour to something that I really needed at the time. I called and said:
Have you used aol in the past week?
What for: email/research/other
I got alot of mothers going 'my son took my credit card, and made 10 more screen names, why am I being charged this, when I call to cancel, YOU DONT CANCEL me'.
I know its your job and everything, and if they are not clear as to what you are saying (alot of past jobs including the 'with your prem. can i record the following....' then I can deal with it, however I am happy their getting fined too.
AOL will always do that, and usally dont check to see how many 'freebies' have been used by such and such customer. When I did my calls for AOL (I had to support my son somehow w/o his father helping), my company was hired outside of AOL to call up and go
In the past week have you used your net connection?
If so, what for
Email/Research/Other
2 minute survey. I was not working with aol, but for them, I dont know which is worse. It only happened for about a 2 month time span, but still I heard so many issues and most being 'I have tried and tried to cancel, but AOL wont let me'.......the best advice I can give is contact them 3 times, if nothing, deny all credit card access with AOL.
Im sure your gf's parents are happy that its free, but its still shitty service, remind them of that. There are cheap ISP's and all are bad (for me, since I love my fast connection/etc/etc) but some are abit better than Ahell.:) Good luck.
It depends, even some free emails (like yahoo and hotmail) have had settings like that in the past.
Since I use my host and my domains email, I can option my inbox to only allow from my address list, anyone, etc. Cheers
Im sure hand written letters to everyone would be pretty bad, esp seeing as Im sure just about anyone that uses a computer more than 10 years has some shitty handwritting now.
Pratice makes perfect!
92 million is alot, I wonder those numbers count the numerous teens that get online with their parents CC# and make new screen names.....
I understand all of the frustration about the spam, I have my email from a good host company and I still receive spam. No I dont personaly like AOL, but just like people who dont like Microsoft, still use their products (not everyone runs Linux on here I know that for sure) as well I know just about anyone that uses Nix and a instant messanger will get some type of relation to AIM.
I dont think he is a 'Megafauna' as someone stated before hand. Yes, he should be held responible for what actions he took. Just the same as people living in Phx AZ should still be suing the hell out of Quest and Verizon Wireless for selling their customers information (I personaly have seen thousands of 'leads', you think that will stop anytime soon?). I have done numerous call center jobs and if its not the employee on a low level selling the information, there is an actual person with that as their job alone.
Had AOL actually taken steps to avoid one of their own employees from doing such a thing, they would not have needed to spend the extra " $300,000 and possibly millions of dollars."
"The judge has recommended that Smathers be forced to pay $84,000 in restitution, triple what he earned. He delayed the order to let AOL prove the damages were higher. The judge suggested the $300,000 damage figure was speculative."
Do you people even relize how much money that already is to a person in american middle class life? I mean seriously, its 3x what he said he took, yes Im sure he could have lied, and Im sure Dunaway could too, but thats 3x. What have you guys stole in your life.....
How many hosting/email companys actually care weather you get spam or not? AOL does it theirselves. And no matter who you are with, somehow, you will always get spam. Just like you always get junk mail. When you try and sign up for a credit card or some bullshit online, you think they wont sell your info? HAHAHAHA
Smathers does know what he did was wrong, the same way you know when you are a kid and your hand is stuck in the cookie jar and your mother walks in with a hand on one hip and the other just shaking the finger (instead of fist) at you. He didnt make alot of money, shit happens, he relized he would get caught, and he plead GUILTY.
Im not going to sit here and defend him, thats not my job, but Im also not going to sit here and let some of you flame him up and down when many worse things have happened online. Do you see the bitches that are sending out viruses get caught lately? No, because we are more worried about AOL and their spam issues, which seeing as both Smathers and Dunaway are up for court...I think thats being taken care of. If he sold the shit to Dunaway and then went bye bye, you think he knows wtf happened to the leads? Like he would even care, I mean would you if you did it? No, you woudl take your $$$ and run.
I do agree to a point when someone mentioned that he should/should not be able to use computers any longer.......if you are able to get that type of information, your boss should be smart enough to relize you have just became the AOL Spammer. I think all work related information should be kept away from him, and he need warn all employees (weather face to face, or a freelance job) what has happened, same thing as when a Rapist need tell new neighbors that he is infact a kiddie perv.
Point in end:
He did it, he got caught, now he must lay in his bed of thornes, weather in jail or house arrest, or more fines added to what Im sure he already has.
Maybe we should work more on fixing the other problems we face now in the IT time and less about whats already being worked on.

Isnt this all like when you see a really hot chick with a really ugly man....
I agree with everything, but: And our government doesn't control the media It tries. :)
I called and said: Have you used aol in the past week? What for: email/research/other I got alot of mothers going 'my son took my credit card, and made 10 more screen names, why am I being charged this, when I call to cancel, YOU DONT CANCEL me'. I know its your job and everything, and if they are not clear as to what you are saying (alot of past jobs including the 'with your prem. can i record the following....' then I can deal with it, however I am happy their getting fined too.
confused, what?
AOL will always do that, and usally dont check to see how many 'freebies' have been used by such and such customer. When I did my calls for AOL (I had to support my son somehow w/o his father helping), my company was hired outside of AOL to call up and go In the past week have you used your net connection? If so, what for Email/Research/Other 2 minute survey. There are cheap ISP's and all are bad (for me, since I love my fast connection/etc/etc) but some are abit better than Ahell. :) Good luck.
It could be the people on aol you are trying to email have their settings as 'do not receive unless from another aol person'.
Had AOL actually taken steps to avoid one of their own employees from doing such a thing, they would not have needed to spend the extra " $300,000 and possibly millions of dollars." "The judge has recommended that Smathers be forced to pay $84,000 in restitution, triple what he earned. He delayed the order to let AOL prove the damages were higher. The judge suggested the $300,000 damage figure was speculative." Do you people even relize how much money that already is to a person in american middle class life? I mean seriously, its 3x what he said he took, yes Im sure he could have lied, and Im sure Dunaway could too, but thats 3x. What have you guys stole in your life..... How many hosting/email companys actually care weather you get spam or not? AOL does it theirselves. And no matter who you are with, somehow, you will always get spam. Just like you always get junk mail. When you try and sign up for a credit card or some bullshit online, you think they wont sell your info? HAHAHAHA Smathers does know what he did was wrong, the same way you know when you are a kid and your hand is stuck in the cookie jar and your mother walks in with a hand on one hip and the other just shaking the finger (instead of fist) at you. Point in end: He did it, he got caught, now he must lay in his bed of thornes, weather in jail or house arrest, or more fines added to what Im sure he already has. Maybe we should work more on fixing the other problems we face now in the IT time and less about whats already being worked on.
Why is it that anything thats 'good' or that the prez states must come from the bible in some form or another, as well with all the qoutes....
Silly Canadians
