You may remember HavenCo, which was a data haven on the Principality of Sealand off the coast of England, who's goal was exactly that (well, not porn, but rather exclusion from any legal status). They ceased operation in 2008 with no explanation, so that may not exactly be the best business model.

The way the flow of information on the Internet works, that won't really do. Once one site gets the information out, others can very easily get it from an RSS feed and post the same information. They are going to be shutting off a lot of little subnets/servers, and only after they notice the information has been re-posted.

The point is that Google is not an "Open Source Company" like RedHat. RedHat makes money by selling software and support for open source products. Google does not sell their open source products directly (unless you count the Google Appliance, and with that you still don't get access to the source code). Google uses open-source based products to do business, which is sell ads to people using their web search. They are equivalent to the people who buy RedHat to run their infrastructure and web servers.

    From the free-to-play FAQ:

Q: Will I still be able to play and enjoy the game without buying items from the LOTRO Store, or is that my only option for gaining weapons, armor, potions, and other goodies such as premium loot?

A: The purchase of items in the LOTRO Store is entirely optional. While items in the Store are designed to immediately enhance your in-game experience, premium loot and rare gear are the rewards of adventure and are only obtainable through gameplay.

So no, a real-world "rich person" (as if rich people play online games) will not be able to gain an edge and pwn you.

  17. Re:Apple versus Microsoft on iPad Bait and Switch — No More Unlimited Data Plan · · Score: 1

Because most people don't use the full 2GB (or even the 200MB) of data a month with just the phone. Now that it is possible to tether your computer, I am willing to bet that AT&T will see the average monthly usage for tethered customers increase quite a bit. Allowing tethering will end up clogging their already slow wireless network, so they want to limit the amount that you can use.

  18. Re:Apple versus Microsoft on iPad Bait and Switch — No More Unlimited Data Plan · · Score: 1

How is tethering any different from normal data usage?

Because it is more convenient. Browsing the web on the small(er) screen on a phone is not as nice as reading it on the nice 15 inch laptop display. Same thing for typing emails on the small screen-based keyboard as opposed to the large keyboard on the laptop. Plus you could play (low bandwidth) games that do not run on a phone. Usage will likely be a lot more from a tethered computer connected to a phone than just the phone itself.

I think you need to look at it from a distance vs. greenness perspective. For the shorter commute (22 miles is on the very outside of what I would call a short commute) a bike is greener. For a longer commute (30+ miles) where biking is not really a viable option, a train might be a greener solution as compared to the only other option of driving a car.
