'Strue. I used to use bzip2 all the time, (putting up with HOURS of compression for backups, even on a 900MHz AMD) until I found out that gzip defaults to 60% of its max compression. I switched to gzip -9 for everything and the compression isn't that much different from bzip2, plus it's a lot faster. .
That's all Fine Well And Good, until you get an error. By *not* compressing certain parts of the archive, you can search for known-good data and recover parts of the zipfile.

Both of my 1st-generation Parallel drives are still going strong. I just recently got USB and internal IDE models as well.
