    I'm really going to miss him. Just discovered his works at the public library a couple of months ago, too. Just finished "Billion dollar boy" (remake of Captains Courageous) and am set to start on "The Web between the worlds."

    If you haven't read any of his stuff, I recommend starting with something like "Higher Education."

    God bless him, he was a cool author. [snif; restrained mourning and respectful thoughts for the dearly departed.]

    Yep. Seriously, the IDE code in the Linux 2.4 kernel needs serious work. I'm lucky to get 5MB/sec over FTP! I've seen my Midnight Commander file copies go from 10MB/Sec to 960KB/sec and BELOW!

    --And yes, all relevant hdparm tweaks are active...

    You shouldn't be so surprised. Most ppl that post on Slashdot these days deserve my .sig.

    The guy that modded his old Commie64 "portable" into a modern Pentium GHz+ (complete with custom wiring, chips and boards) got the same treatment - again, ONLY from slashdot trolls and kiddiez.

    I thought his mod was cool and wrote him an encouraging note.

    People like thee and me are getting few and far between. NOTE TO SLASHDOT READERS: Please do not flame people unnecessarily or in haste. These folks in Pakistan are writing code that can help other people too.

    I see a solution: Regular customers get a no-backdoor-at-all Tivo.

    Pay $20 more and you get the backdoor code AND PASSWORD supplied and Enabled.

    For $20, you can be ROOT on your TV box!

    Sounds weird to me. The disk itself is more likely to fail than the SCSI controller or the entire server.

    I don't see why you couldn't just dup the hardware, disk and all, and just have a hot-spare server ready to go if you need it.
