I am running the previous version (5.04, Hoary Hedgehog) on a P3 800 MHz and it works quite nicely. One thing I would suggest is getting something 'lighter' than Gnome or KDE for the desktop. XFCE4 works great for me, has a modern look, but is small enough that it feels really snappy and responsive on old hardware. It's quite easy to install thru Synaptic.
...everything "just works", the first time, without massive twiddling of configuration files. Or at least Hoary Hedgehog did. This is the Linux distro I recommend first and foremost (Eric, time to switch to Linux buddy!), and 5.10 will definitely be going on my box this weekend.
Now what are you people on about? RTFA -- "It just works" is not a new marketing slogan or advertising campaign, it's just a "design philosophy"... if I say I want my product to "just work", how is that stealing from Apple?
For something under 5 bucks, try making a power supply fan muffler. I made one out of cardboard and masking tape and covered the inside with $1.99 roll of adhesive-backed weatherstripping from Home Depot. It really cuts the whooshing-air noise down to a low hum, and only raises the inside case temperature 1 or 2 degrees.
I've been researching this all week; I want to make my main desktop computer (which is in my bedroom and has an amazingly loud power supply fan) into an always-on Linux server. Now as soon as the Slashdot herd moves on to something else I'll actually be able to RTFA...
There are two identical anonymous coward posts. One says "Does it run Linux", and has a score of 1. The other says "Does it run Windows", and has a score of -1, troll.

Spam in my cyberspace and meatspace mailboxes costs me $3 a day, based on my hourly wage and the amount of time it takes to sort through and trash it. For junk mail, I waste a little bit of the mailers' money as well by returning their "Business Reply" Envelopes stuffed full of other junk mail. Too bad we can't do something similar with spammers.
hey, f*cktards, what's with the "m_" - its a variable, so of course its in memory.
Umm, the "m_" prefix is for "member", as in member of a class. Has nothing to do with memory.I am running the previous version (5.04, Hoary Hedgehog) on a P3 800 MHz and it works quite nicely. Think about the intended audience here... and their dexterity (or lack thereof) with a mouse...
[cue picture of Scotty holding the mouse up to his face and saying "...Computer?"]
people tend to go out more on Fridays.
Let me be the the first to say you must be new here.

Why, why, why do kids always think that way?

It's not Ethical, it's Business!
From the somabody-neads-to-chack-thair-spalling dept.
That's OK, someone will put Linux on it and have it kernel panicking before long.
As long as the cast of BSG doesn't start going back in time to late twentieth-century every season then I'll be OK with it.

And you expect the average PayPal user to know all this... how?

I find it ironic that one of the Linux-only games mentioned in the article was Software Tycoon.
