  1. Arch Linux on Keeping Up With DoD Security Requirements In Linux? · · Score: 1

I'd recommend checking out Arch, it is a bleeding edge distro that also makes recompilation quite easy. There are a lot of smart people working on it and the documentation is quite good. Arch follows the KISS principle and keeps their repositories fairly light while letting the community handle the masses of programs.

Anyway, I recommend checking it out here: http://www.archlinux.org/

  2. Seattle - Home of Depression on Is Your Mood a Result of Where You Live? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I am from Seattle and it is common knowledge here that weather has a relation to feelings. At one point the city was #1 for depression and it has been shown that this is because of the constant overcast weather. People have taken to sticking their heads in light boxes to relieve the depression.

Anyway, the point of all this is that the article was poorly written and is common sense. Also, it is sunny in Seattle right now and there are probably people who still have their head in a box.

  3. Not Utilizing T-Mobiles Features on Google Unveils First Android Phone · · Score: 1

After hearing about the release of the phone I have been saving my discount for I decided to actually call T-Mobile and do some digging. While most of the complaints I have seen here are valid, they wouldn't really stop me from buying this phone today. Unfortunately there are other reasons which have helped with my decision to wait. First off, the Wi-Fi HotSpot service which allows unlimited calls for $10 per month using Wi-Fi is unavailable. This is a huge feature to me considering the amount of time I am around wireless networks and considering the many places that don't have signal but do have Wi-Fi. Since the phone is open source, hopefully this is a feature that can be added after purchase but I will be waiting to see about this. Secondly, my discount that I have been saving for this particular phone doesn't change the price from what a new user would be getting it for. I realize that this is for the pre-order and only prior customers can get it however right now this is a factor. This is one thing I am hoping will change when the phone is open to the public and I will be waiting till then to check back and possibly order. Anyway, I am really excited to see this release but right now it needs to fix a few things before it will really take off and before I will purchase one.

  4. Re:Speed Cameras on New Service Maps Speed Traps By Cell Phone · · Score: 1

To all of the "Or you could not speed" arguments I must say that I do speed when I am comfortable enough with my surroundings and myself. I also would like to state that I think people who speed and are reckless should definitely get tickets.

I do realize there is the conservation of fuel argument and the pollution rates. However sooner than later those issues wont be a concern and the concern should be aimed in the direction of keeping the drivers on the road safe, not just use them as an account when city funds run low.

  5. Speed Cameras on New Service Maps Speed Traps By Cell Phone · · Score: 1

My state just passed a law allowing the use of speed cameras to catch speeders and I had been contemplating a site that reports on their locations. The types of cameras that I've seen used around the city are not mobile so having these locations down would be more helpful than speed traps which tend to vary day by day.

Personally I am fine with police sitting out waiting for speeders because if you are attentive enough then you obviously aren't being a danger to the road. However, the cameras that are hard to spot are things I would prefer to just avoid all together.

The idea of signals being sent and recieved through the cellphone is an idea I disagree with as well. Having a mode perhaps on the cell that acted something like a nearness detector that would beep as you neared a point or something. But the idea of moving your attention away from driving is in fact making it less safe to drive.

One last note, the idea of a simple Google Maps integrated site is a great idea for this sort of thing. The real problem with these sorts of projects however is the need of active participation to get anywhere. A way to get some people out perhaps would be to schedule certain days where a few people get together and fan out for a few hours. Solve the problem of getting the info and a project like this would really take off.

If someone is offering this support then it would be nice if he found a group like this and helped out. It would be nice to have a website that brings together all drivers that are being worked on and make them easy to find for someone who really wants to help. Here is the driver I was talking about by the way: http://www.actiongames.co.uk/m560x/

  8. Founder on HS Students Compete In FIRST Robotics Competition · · Score: 1

As a founder of my schools FIRST team I'd like to say this is a great opportunity for people to get into. I was a part of my team from the first year and for the next four years. One of the harder parts I had and this I'm sure had to do with the school I was in, was getting other people to work as hard s I did. I took part in building, fund raising, programming, and other overall work. While in the program and for a year or two after I started and continued a FIRST Lego League program which is a sub of the FIRST Competition. It uses the Lego Mindstorm units and has a similar competition which is again national with regional competitions. As for NASA being a huge sponsor, its true that for the first year or two they give you sponsorship but after that you have to be a fairly special team to still be in their pockets. Same goes for Microsoft and a few other of these bigger corporations. Anyway, I think its a great program for people to find, found, and get into. I've tried going back and helping out my high school team but there just doesn't seem to be enough motivation there unfortunately, I hope other people have a better time with that.

I have been a MUDer for over nine years now, I have tried MMORPGs like Shadowbane, Ultima, and WoW to name a few, but I always keep coming back to the MUD that I have been with for all this time. There are many reasons, one is the community, on a MUD like the one I play there are only about 40 of us and we know each other well. Another reason is that the MUD that I play at least is about Role Playing, which is not something that can be truely done on a MMORPG. A good balance of PK and RP is what is needed, and MUDs can provide that. Also on a MUD you have to actually use your mind, your imagination. Another great thing I have found after my years of MUDing is an improvement in certain skills, I read faster, type faster, and can make things up on the spot that sound more reasonable. Overall I think that MUDs are great things, but they arn't for everyone but those of you who take to them they are much much better than a graphical game ever could be. By the way, the MUD I play is called Dark Mists http://darkmists.org/ [darkmists.org] and my character is Nij so if any of you want to stop by I'd be happy to show you around.

First thing I said when Wind Waker was released "This is not Zelda". Though I did not like the graphics, the game was alright. While I was talking to my friends about it I came to the realization that the new graphics were really really good...just not for Zelda. Since the announcment of Twilight Princess, I have been looking over screenshots and videos, this game has the type of graphics Zelda should. I mean sure sometimes you can have a really odd game and have it turn out well (Animal Crossing) but for a classic like Zelda, it has a mind of its own and what the people like is where it needs to go.
