  1. This is ridiculous on Dell Selling 30" Flat Panels · · Score: 3, Informative

Why would anyone want to spend $2000 on a monitor? For half the cost (and this isn't even a great example), I'd sooner buy a projector that gives me up to 300inches of view space. Not to mention I can watch movies on it, too.

That our Privacy Commissioner, the representative of privacy issues within Canada, says this in response to her cell phone records being bought:

"Her mouth hangs open, and she appears near tears. 'Oh my God," she says finally. "I didn't realize this was possible. This is really alarming.'"

  3. Maclean's covered this on Your Cell Records For Sale Online, Cheap · · Score: 4, Informative

Two months ago, Macleans (Canadian magazine) ran a story on this, but they took it one step further: they bought the cell phone records of Canada's Privacy Commisssioner, Jennifer Stoddart. It was remarkably embarassing. Reading the Maclean's article was entertaining, so if any Canadian's missed it, check it out.

I stopped reading when I saw that they equate productivity with lines of code per day...

Why? It is not just a measure of lines of code per day. A measure of lines of code per day implies a heavy addition non-programming work to ensure that each line does not affect the integrity of the software. So it does make sense, unless you forget that the quality of these 'lines of codes' is nowhere near comparable to the code the average Joe writes.

So they are more likely to be dissuaded from pursuing computer science if they are exposed to an unpleasant environment, bad teaching, and negative stereotypes like the image of the male hacker.

What makes you think that women (and men) entering other disciplines don't face the same environments? How is a woman entering Computer Science any different from a man entering Women's Studies? The irrelevant stereotype of the male hacker, bad teaching, has absolutely no correlation with the lack of women entering computer science because this is true for every single discipline known.

For some real experience, in my fourth year of my CS degree, there is all of two women that are graduating. Yes, two women, out of a hundred guys or so. But I don't attribute that to what this article purports is the cause -- no, I think at some point women make decisions for themselves and realize they aren't interested in computer science. I think this theory of mine is called 'common-sense'.

This is where good journalism comes in -- it actually answers these questions for you. I had to search for the pdf which explained this. I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned first.

I've been curious for a long time how to get sites to rank up in Google, Yahoo, etc., and while I admit I haven't done my homework, this article didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. I talked about these problems back in November in another AJAX thread here. There was a good followup, too. I think what I said still stands today.

"Until AJAX can be implemented with a tried-and-true method with absolutely no breakage in the traditional flow of movement between pages (being able to recycle data and regular page transitions using Back and Forward), there is no possible way that AJAX will become another requirement of web applications. As it stands, its a very popular trend, but it really isn't holding much weight despite what the average web developer may think."

Perhaps. You know, most documentaries (and movies) that are successful are usually based on things we experience every day (bad presidency, McDonald's, relationships, work, et al). And given the fact that the movie industry is huge, I'd probably guess that a lot of people would want to watch something like this. I'm not sure how this documentary is any different from the rest, except that someone has finally done a documentary on your specific line of work.
