Zoe's Tale
·
· Score: 2, Interesting
I went through a few years where I didn't. I got on a fantasy kick, then alternate history, then a short flirtation with erotic vampire stories (yeah, yeah, I know, sue me), several straight historical novels, a few classics I missed in school, and then back to SF via Scalzi's trilogy.
###SPOLIERS###
I like the first two a lot, but he ends #2 with the hint that the Colonial Union might be planning something really clever to counter the Conclave, and book 3 starts with all that dead and done already, and the CU acting orders of magnitude dumber than before. The entity that managed to establish a human foothold in a hostile universe didn't realize that blowing up one ship from 412 races isn't going to anger all 412? C'mon... It's like he felt that, oh no, I can't depict human government doing something well.
I guess I'm an old Campbellian at heart. I like stories where the hairless apes from Earth outwit the big, scary, superadvanced alien races. The Niven's Man/Kzin wars, Brin's Uplift series and Heinlein's own Starship Troopers are good examples. Despite being a misanthrope, I like stories like that. I guess it's because I view humanity as utterly stupid, so I like stories where the opposite is true, I suppose.
How is it socialism for the government to invest in a private business and get a return? That's not complete ownership. As a person who hates government waste and loves free markets, I think it's the best idea out there. Maybe after enough of these investments, the government could develop its own revenue stream and they could stop raping my wallet.
He's an excitable guy, and I think given ten people you'll get ten different reactions to a potentially life threatening situation. I guess I just don't let things like that annoy me.
Other than the one guy in the other chase crew who apparently has lost the ability to control the volume of his voice (BACK UP! BAACK UPP!! BAAACK UPP!!! BAAAAAAAAACK UPP!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Did you watch the whole segment? There was a fricken tornado bearing down on them. It passed right over the spot they were when he was shouting.

So, I would argue, might the TV show 24. Look how often the torture on that show doesn't work out as planned.
That's because they never give Jack enough time! He asked for *five* minutes alone with the suspect, dammit!
The best was when he was interrogating a guy, and shot the guy's *wife* in the leg. BAD ASS!:-)
One of the best parts of Shivering Isles was walking around town and interrogating citizens with the help of the royal torturer and his shock spell. There's another part where you, dungeon master-like, subject treasure hunters to various obstacles that either kill them or drive them mad.
I was on her side until I saw the email read like political form letter. Yeesh! People really write like that? I thought those were all computer generated or composed by captive serial killers deep in secret prison sub-basements.
The university really has no choice, in my opinion, but to hang her.
It's OK. I think everyone had some sort of glittering, shiny fantasy about what they thought Obama was going to do. The obamacotin is just starting to wear off and the country is coming off its high. Prepare for an ugly crash. Maybe even a freak out.
But, but, but throwing more money and computers will magically fix the system, won't it? You mean all those administrators and unions who never seemed to give a shit about the students before will not suddenly start caring because Obama waved his +5 Charisma wand across the arc of the moral universe? The deuce you say!
Of course that vast resource requires one to be able to read well, do basic sums and think critically enough to filter through the sea of bullshit for the gems. Are the schools doing that first?
So how does that work? They've uploaded a soldier to a webserver somewhere, and now they're going to download him hundreds of times?
It's called the "my pampered, western life is boring, and I need to think I'm involved in some sort of vast struggle for the future" effect. It's been pandemic in the geek community for over a decade now. Ignore it.
It'll just be more money down a rat hole. Am I the only person left in the country who wonders where the existing spending on education actually goes? It's fraking sick, man. No one gives a shit anymore. They just want to pump more money into a broken system and think it'll magically get better even though you have the same useless shitheads in the positions of power in the bureaucracy. Rah rah rah! Spend spend spend! Fuck oversight. Fuck accountability! Yay!
And this accomplishes what, exactly, for education? Have all the computers thrown at education in the past accomplished anything? What does the broadband do for the students? Am I the only one asking these questions?

doesn't quite have that 'cool' factor that VR goggles / headsets do
Obviously a definition of cool of which I was previously unaware.

...the whole sharing brains thing was just too messy. Everyone always went home all sticky.
Eew.
You do realize this all is just scripted garbage don't you? It's not real.
Wow, really? I thought 24 was a documentary! Gosh! Thanks for the news flash, Mr. Brokaw!
But, seriously, what were you high on when you posted this?
You mean if they were *different* religions from the ones they already are.

He's "an Apple executive notably lacking in Jobs's showmanship and star power," according to the Fortune blogger.
Nonsense! Behold and rejoice! The era of Schillermania begins! Phil! Phil! Phil! Phil! Phil! Woooooooooot!

Good times. :-)
No, *puns* are the lowest form. Sarcasm is the tool of the enlightened.
Slow down, Poet Laureate! It has been 8 minutes since you last read a poem!
Well, OK. Maybe we could breed a few in captivity on an island?

I hear that value gets exaggerated a lot, though, and others have declared it as irrelevant.

Some of us have been openly advocating against the war on drugs for a very long time now. We welcome the rest of you to objective reality.
even feeling at home in the body of someone of the opposite sex
Feel at home? I'd never move out!
Key word here is feel.
Yeah, yeah. The low road.
