    The X-Files was a good show, folks, but it's time to move on.

    There are no alien abductions, there are no chemtrails, we really did go to the Moon and all the big problems in the country- from 9/11 to Katria relief- are the result of chaos, sloppiness and stupidity unguided by secret cabals or ninja assassins or Skull and Bones members.

    and the remote is a triumph of engineering

    Not the one for the DirecTivos. The back skip button is right above the TV power button. You get used to it, but I still accidently turn the TV off now and then. There should be criminal penalties for interface glitches that bad.

    Still, it would be nice to have some major shakeup in physics... there really haven't been any in my lifetime.

    Just off the top of my head: the fact that the expansion rate of the universe appears to be *increasing*? That was a pretty discipline shaking discovery.

    I'm sorry, but in what parallel dimension do they teach maturity in the school system?

    In all the schools I went to, the clique-ized and institutionalized immaturity was actively supported by the teaching staff that openly favored the "popular" kids. The end result when this cancer has fully metastasized is national news stories of the football team stuffing foriegn object up the asses of other students while the coach looks on approvingly. Google on "mepham high football". And that's the best case. Worst case is Columbine.

    Maybe that's teaching about the real world, but don't you dare call it maturity.

    I agree, and I'm not even a big "home theater" guy with my now modest and antiquated (but still bright and happy) 36" CRT TV.

    However, I do like to watch movies in bed sometimes (no, not pr0n), and will stream a ripped DVD from my desktop computer to my laptop which is sitting on my stomach (on a heat shield), so the 15" LCD *looks* pretty big. Put the Bose noise cancelling headphones on and, hey, bedroom cinema. :)

    I can get a DTV pay per view for $3.99.

    Factor in my extra effort for doing a download, I'd say $2.99, and a defninte buy at $2.00

    And it has to be of adequate quality to burn well to a DVD.

    *And* i have to be able to burn it to a DVD easily- and I mean drag the file into Toast Titanium and click the burn button easy.

    Well, Galileo was arguing for heliocentrism over geocentrism. Both sides were far beyond the flat Earth theory.

    Actually, the idea that the flat Earth theory was widely accepted any time after the 1st century AD is a rather unfortunate myth.

    I won't even get started on ID, because we'll be here all evening.

    Over in the Mac realm, we can usually make a virtual disk image of the original CD, and just load that before playing the game. Worked for SimCity 4 and a few other games. Apple's Disk Tool can copy a disc to the hard drive. When you double click on the copy, it mounts on the desktop as a virtual version of the original. Not sure if Windows has something like that as I've not had the need to do such a thing in Windows.

    My guess would be the over-engineering of the rovers was not a significant part of the cost? Maybe some more expensive components and materials, but the labor costs might have been unchanged. Surely the cost of getting the rovers to Mars would not be affected.

    This is nickel and dime stuff. And for those nickels and dimes we get over a year of solid planetary science? Where's the down side again?

    And the expected lifespan might have been a lower limit on their MTBF analysis. Those are always lowball because reliability engineers like to cover their butts. ;-)
