I think it was B.F. Skinner who said he could raise two different children to have the same personality just by controlling their environment. So I think its highly unlikely a clone would have the same personality unless it was raised by similar parents in a similar house around the same time you were. All of their experiences would have to be similar to yours and they would have to learn the same lessons you did to come to the same conclusions and think similarly.
But I believe this shows how important our environment is to our developement. I'm not concerned about cloning at all, but I am concerned about money and how it affects our environment since we live in a system based on money.
And the arguement against it on moral grounds is just as weak. I don't believe the same fundamentalist religion the rest of you preach. So why do I care if some baby is being killed before its brain ever gets a chance to develope. We killed 6000 innocent people on a whim that Iraq had WMD. So obviously we have no concern for innocent human life. At least not enough concern to listen to the opposing arguements against the war or reason itself.
Ethics and morals have already been thrown out the window. If we're going to continue research on animals and subjecting children to brain altering medication in the name of conformity then by all means let's study embryos. What are you affraid of? Satan?
Let's say our limited perspective from our solar system were somehow enhanced by a telescope/sensor at a neighboring solar system. Wouldn't this give us a much more accurate map of the universe than our current narrow view? For all we know most of the matter might not be visible because something is standing between us and it. The very fabric of space gets distorted by the weak gravitational field of our small star and each and every bit of matter floating around out there and we believe that larger gravitational forces exist, like black holes. If we can't even completely understand how and why our star warps the fabric of space how can we expect to KNOW the universe and all the matter contained within it?
We don't understand the laws of this universe. We've barely been able to explain it with simple mathematics. The universe, for all we know, might require higher mathematics than the human brain can easily comprehend. And what if there are other universes? But what do I know, I'm just one small voice in this titanic harmony-challenged choir. I'm sure one day someone with a lot of money will figure it out and tell all of us about it in an infomercial late at night on TV.
Why do people spam you? Because they want to get your money.
So the simple solution is to use your geeks and technology to create an economy that runs without money. Kinda like a clockless CPU. Then nobody would want to spam you, except to get your vote. They also wouldn't have any reason to tax you or charge you interest or forclose on your home or cut your pay or lay you off...
Its nice they threw in an AMD for good measure, but Linux runs well on the AMD64, G5 and ia32, among many other things. So why not at least compare Apples to Intels?
When I was 9 years old Times New Roman was one of my favorite fonts. Along with wingdings.
But now that I've been using computers for a long time I much prefer Sans Serifs like Helvetica or Arial! They are so much easier to read and don't look so gothic.
Although I did find this: "According to most studies, sans serif fonts are more difficult to read. For this reason, they are used most often for short text components such as headlines or captions."
I wonder who conducts these studies. Do you find Times New Roman easier to read?
Let's see. There's never anything on. Reality shows are a constant reminder that people will do anything for money. Its main purpose is to advertise to its paying customers. And its mostly just a waste of time.
I know we are creatures of comfort, but don't you know that TV and the telephone and the people who think these mediums are the future are what is holding us back?
Without them we'd all have broadband connections, free A/V confrencing/chatting/IM software, and access to all the content in the world. With them we have a few hours of garbage advertisements waiting for us around dinner time every night and the opportunity to always pay less but never get what you want.
Does Nvidia care if its a 3D gamer or a corporation buying their products? They will make the same profits from them either way and will probably get less tech support calls from the corporate buyers.
If they give up on Linux they lose this potential corporate market, which they currently dominate because of their support. Every computer needs a video card, but very few of them will have $400+ cards.
That the Boss who thinks he is being disrespected because his employees speak up is treating those employees like objects, not people of equal status.
And the employee is well within their right to speak up. Every employee relies on their company to make the right decisions to keep them employeed. Some are even share holders. So they have a right to make sure the company is making the right decisions and getting the right feedback.
If management feels uncomfortable or disrespected, perhaps they should, and perhaps they should remove themselves from management since they seem to have a hard time doing a good job at it. Management is about communicating effectively and getting accurate feedback from all aspects of your business! How can you manage if you are not informed?
So if we study psychology it tells us that we are a product of our environment. This environment include our daily interactions. To be the most productive we need to create a comfortable environment that promotes communication and cooperation. One where the skilled employees train the new hires and the management listens to everyones feedback and encourages everyone to think about their jobs and how to improve efficiency, increase revenues, become more competitive, etc.
We are, afterall, working for eachother. Even if some of us think we only work for the money and for ourselves.
I imagine repairing electronics or cars is as easy as repairing a computer. You just have to RTFM first. But the body repairs itself. And I know how to sew. Its not all that difficult, really, unless something serious goes wrong with yer organs. But I wouldn't expect a doctor to operate on themselves.
To Nvidia is being "nice" because they make their hardware partially functional on my favorite OS?
They don't have to support Linux at all. I have free OSS, but still non-GPL, drivers through XFree86 that work just fine. Its nice of them to consider Linux a viable platform, but I think their support leaves much to be desired.
And if they are unwilling to do it why not open source the driver and give the OSS community a hand at providing FULL support on Linux, eh? What have you got to lose? Some lame IP that will be worthless in a few years anyway, just like the hardware? Or a few upset Linux customers who can't get their hardware to function properly and are forced to download and install a driver that could have just as easily been included with the distro.
Hows about we just lock every one of these criminals up in our prison system. There, that solves all these problems, right?
Why do people steal and cheat and lie? What incentive do we have to do these things? Afterall its easy to get a job and make all the money anyone would ever want.
No, we're looking at a future where only the very largest companies will sue you because you're infringing on their patents and supposed copyrights, like SCO.
How long has SCO been damaging the credibility of Linux? How long before someone does something about it? How much does it cost that someone?
So you see, even without software patents, copyright law is vague enough to allow SCO to exist. With patents it will only get worse.
Yeah, he broke the law. So fine him $1000 and lets move on. Its not like he injured another person physically. I mean how can you even compare this "crime" to murder?
Saying that they shouldn't be punished for committing a crime is just wrong.
And imprisoning someone for committing a "crime" that does not physically injure anyone is just as wrong.
I consider a crime to be stealing someone's car or their physical possessions. Stealing someone's IP by copying it (not taking any physical products) some might consider a serious crime, if it were their IP. But I can't feel that strongly about something so petty.
If increasing the pipeline depth past 20 stages increases performance then why not just increase it to 100 or 1000 stages? Why wait? It will obviously be faster, right?
I think there's more to this than the number of stages in the pipeline.
Personally it makes me feel good knowing that the software developed on our PCs outclasses the commercial UNIX implementations. It reminds me how much more valuable this software is to us end users and developers than just about any commercial organizations.
Bush just wants to build a moon base because voters think NASA and space exploration is cool. He would still do everything in his power to keep oil the primary energy source for as long as possible.
And your professor's estimate probably came from somewhere else, so who knows how accurate the estimate is or when it was made. They are discovering new pockets of oil all the time as well as developing methods to syntheticly produce the stuff.
Its forseeable we could run the world economy on oil for the next hundred years. But the main problem with that is the gases which probably will cause severe global warming that will kill us all. Oh well, I had a lot of fun burning out in my Mustang.
I couldn't agree more. Instead of how many degrees do you have perhaps their questions should be how many books did you read and understand or something.
I personally like job experience, what projects did you work on, etc. And I believe that each and every one of us are capable of being a Sr. Tech in any field if we're put in the right environment with a patient group of people who want to teach and learn.
Some people just take a little more encouragement and incentive to become interested in this technology than others. That's where the environment can help. The environment is everything you see, hear, feel, smell, and taste. If you feel relaxed and stable in your position, within your group, its much easier to focus on the education and the work.
So the goal should not be to grill people on technical details a manager probably doesn't care about, but instead to build this environment for everyone, including the managers. All unneccessary work-related stress should be removed from this environment, such as metrics and employee expectations.
Free drinks, entertainment, relaxed working hours, extra supplies, encouragement to seek and provide educational services... goes a long way.
Oh, and keep your employees, don't lay them off after you invest all this effort into them. Work with them and help them transition if the projects they were assigned to stop making profits, etc.
I bet we could teach corporate management a thing or two. Haha! As if they would ever listen to us.;)

Our constitutional rights aren't good reasons?
The RIAA is a dying animal...
The RIAA and SCO have so much in common. Who wants to bet the MPAA will follow suit?
Current Intel Processors Tested With Linux?

You can't play your old games on your new game machine because of Intellectual Property, eh?
Perhaps now is a good time for some of you to reconsider the national and global ramifications of current IP and patent laws.

But if the Linux market is growing at the rate everyone says it is and they give up on Linux their shareholders might not like it.
So I don't think they can just give up on Linux, no matter how much the Linux community disses them.
