I think that feeling like a "hero" at level 1 will be the downfall of the game.
I played Everquest for years from level 1 to 65, (No it does NOT take years to get 1-65, 4 months casual).
Thing is, you feel totaly worthless untill lvl 55. You're wearing junk, you miss 60% of the time, you swim slow, you can't tell north from south etc.
But that's exactly what makes leveling to 65 worth it, the desire to become a "hero". You WANT to be a powerful char and you want to have good gear and a good guild and so on. Feeling that you have those things at level 1 would not make me want to play.
Fact is that about 6 months after I joined a truly outstanding guild and we defeated some of the most powerful mobs in game, I quit. There was no more "purpose" behind it. I had all the skills I wanted, I had gear that would have made me drool 6 month ago and which then seemed absolutley unatainable. But with all that gear and levels and the sense of being a Hero I felt that I had 'beaten' the game.
Raids are not that much fun when you don't much care for the gear that the mob drops.
Sure there is the community, and I miss it, but without the desire to play EQ you cannot be a member of a guild as you will not be happy raiding and so on.
What I'm saying is that games need to be chalanging and difficult and you need to progress from a nobody because thats what creates the sense of achievment and the urge to play.
I have been worried from the start that the blizzard WOW might be a "carebear" universe, I suppose my fears were justified.
EQ had also suffered the attack of carebears as has UO. Sure I was happy with the graveyards and the easy transportation of the last 2,3 expansions. But the truth is that months after I felt that EQ was losing the "feel". It is not the same anymore when you get from one continent to another simply by clicking on a stone. The sense of distance, the emersion, the thrill of it all is lost. I still remember the horrors of being a newbie and trying to get from Qeynos to Freeport (Think of it as a trip from San Fransico to NY) by foot at level 16. I remember how it got dark in the Karanas and that was before they patched the darkness, as in it got REALLY dark, you couldn't see anything. I remember trying to walk up a thin path on mountain on the way to high hold in the rain, in the dark, and being chased by bandits knowing that if I died I'd have to walk back to this spot naked.
I remember falling of a boat in the middle of the ocean and swimming onto an island for at least 40 minutes only to find that it was an ogre island and that they don't much like me. I got killed by then and I remember how happy I was when a high level char offered to help me get my body back. I remember how godlike he seemed when he killed 3 ogres without as much as a scratch.
When the fear and the challange left, so did my desire to play.

LOTR - As good as mediocre can be..
on
The Trilogy as One
·
· Score: 2, Interesting
I saw both movies, because I see at least 80% of movies that come out purley out of boredom.
Yet I must admit that I was quite excieted about LOTR, only to be disapointed.
Maybe I expected too much, maybe I allowed myself to be a victim of the hype. Maybe it'd be better had I gone in expecting nothing like I did with Fight Club and come out feeling that I had just seen the best movie of the year if not the decade without expecting it.
I am not saying that LOTR is bad, it certainly deserves an A+ for effort, for acting, for the effects and for the enviroment and atmosphere they managed to create.
Yet with all that LOTR just feels hollow, something is missing. It just feels too much like an action flick. There was supposed to be something of an epic scale in LOTR, a great strugle, yet I don't think the movie is able to get that across.
Ripped that little metal cover of the bottom of my P75, and tada CPU.
Works fine even now. Sure you can't 'see' it as it's on the bottom of the CPU (where the pins are) with the heat sink on top and mobo on the bottom...but still.
The problem I have...erm...had with small phones is that they're terribly fragile. It's as if they're expected to be carried in a padded purse or something. Makes your wonder why they even made it so small if you need carry those little phones in bulky thick plastic belt clips etc.
Once they make a small phone like that out of something nice and hard, whatever it is, I'll be happy.
For example, the Motorola i1000plus is quite durable, although big. Now compar it to a StarTec, smaller phone, but put the belt clip on and it's just as big. Don't even try to wear it without the clip. It's ultra fragile. On the other hand I've had the i1000 in my pocket, no clip no protector nothing for quite some time and no problems at all.
And why should they? They're just interested in Linux as far as the server market.
Truth is that linux is a horrible gaming platform.
Most gamers just want to play games. They don't want to recompile the kernel to play. They want to put the disk in and click "play" and that it.
Go buy yourself a lvl 60 warrior for $600+.
Or the EQ currency Platinum.
For referance. A level 1 character loots about 2 silver a kill. 10 silver are 1 gold. 10 gold is 1 plat. 10k plat ~ $75-$100. A level 60 can make about 300pp a 'night' ~5 hours just from the money that drops, that does not include actual items that can sell for as much as 150k+ (We're talking VERY rare dragon lvl drops such as cob bp etc)
You're just as free to horribly fail in life as you are to be wildly sucessful in it.
Thats what freedom is. Nobody will be there to help you up if you fall on your face. You're free to bang your head on the wall for the rest of your life. Your free to work your ass of to find a better wall. But you don't have to. I don't have to help you find a better wall. Nobody does.
No I cannot say that I had a particularly comfortable life. Trust me on that.
I do NOT expect anyone to look out for me or some BS like that. I do not expect to be paid over 8 for that kind of job. It's not WORTH more than that.
I made it clear that you get screwed like that in any line of work and I do not care for your or anyone's problems. I got my own shit to deal with.
So do you. I will not be the concience of with world. I do not care for you. I pay my taxes, thats my way to take care of the losers of the world. They can live of my work.
>>People cannot form unions since our pseudogovernment has completely undermined them.
So? What are unions for other than strikes?
>>Public education is a malformed joked, being >>actively disassembled by conservative treachery >>and liberal stupidity. So...
Blame your parents for not home schooling. Blame yourself for not going to the library and learning yourself. Where there's a will there's a way.
>>You can't make a decent living doing honest work.
I can. And pay enough taxes for the jerks that 'cannnot'
>>You can't get an education unless you come from an already fairly affluent family.
Oh yeah? BS! BS BS BS!!
God that is such BS!
How can you not? What's stopping you? Whats' in your damn way except your lack of motivation!
The goal of the company is to make a profit. Not to make the world a better place.
Everyone is out to make a profit. You want to help people and make them happy?
PayPal me some $$$ it'll make me happy, it'll pay for college and I will think the world is a happy place.
Till then I'll be out to make a profit. Just like you.
Yes factory works sucks. So like the workers said "Get a CS degree."
"Workers in india would never stand for this."
Thats nice to know, so why are you here?
Nobody MADE anyone work there. Nobody forced people to come to the US to work deadend jobs 24/7 for $8/h.
Thats life. Thats how it works. You don't like it leave.
It's not the company's job to make the lowend workers get rich. They're not supposed to care for you.
You think it's any different for high level programers sysadmins or whatever? You don't think they can get a phone call "Very nice work on that project you finished yesterday. Very impressive. Oh and this was your last day."
Thats life. It's not anyone's job to make your life peachy. It's your job. Don't whine to me about how the corparate machine is ruining your life.
No network administration skills are needed to deploy or maintain the iMass server. Simply, plug it into a power source, attach a second cable to an Internet feed and then turn the machine on. The iMass unit will automatically setup all network configuration parameters including firewall, file, print, Web, FTP, email services, DNS entries and DHCP.
Right. So they're all set up the same? Plug it in and let everyone in?
Sounds rather scary. I can understand Snap file servers etc..
But firewalls etc?
Chances are that to avoid things 'not working' everything is on, every port is open and everything works.
"Compiling a kernel is hard and should only be done by the select few."
Thats sounds like what programmers used to say when they wrote things in machine language.
The goal is to make it easy enough for anyone with a brain to do it. Hell they don't even need to know that they're recompiling a kernel.
"Oh you want to do that? Ok give me a sec and then I'll reboot and you'll be all done." *compiling*
Thats the goal. The user doesn't HAVE to know just 'what' they're doing.
Do you really know exactly what that for statement you just wrote compiles to in machine? Do you care? If you want Open GL do you have to know ANYTHING about the kernel?
Sure it HELPS to know these thigns but for the end user it's not a must and should never be a must.
Just when you thought the cursed thing had died.
Has anyone ever tried to make a webpage work with it? By far the most cryptic errors ever.
"This page is too large to display" on a TINY page.
Tivo? How big is the HD on the Xbox anyway.
Now I've been dreaming of this for years.
Why not instead of trying to make a PC out of an Xbox make an Xbox out of a PC?
Why not release a $150 card or even $300 one that you stick and your PC and tada you can play Xbox games on your nice non blury monitor?
Same with PS2 etc.
Staying on topic, M$ trying to make something do everything is typical. So expect the Xbox to try to do many things and fail at all of them.
Well ummm...
You see...erm...after he has 'some' sexual activity, he will find that writing viruses isn't as much "fun" as previously believed.
Hey it got me of Evercrack...think of what it can do for you...
Mars looks a great deal like a red apple.
Since slashdot has no "Mars" icon as such, the Apple logo will have to do...
Well what about Half Life 2?
I wasn't sure about D3 which is where the "whatnot" comes in..
Isn't it odd that Ms does not plan to relaese Virtual PC for the G5?
I mean it'd be good revenue if every mac user had to buy VPc and WinXP just so that they can play Doom3 or whatnot..

Most mods will anyway. Nothing new.
OCing voids your waranty.
Been done...

Works fine even now. Sure you can't 'see' it as it's on the bottom of the CPU (where the pins are) with the heat sink on top and mobo on the bottom...but still.
Now we just need transperant motherboards.
Did anyone bother getting the Diamond Mako?
It's a Psion Revo sold by Diamond with no real difference to the Revo other than the name.
I picked mine up for $100 from TigerDirect, and promptly lost it in under 2 months. But it was great while it lasted.
The problem I have...erm...had with small phones is that they're terribly fragile. It's as if they're expected to be carried in a padded purse or something. Makes your wonder why they even made it so small if you need carry those little phones in bulky thick plastic belt clips etc.

What good is a cell phone 'ring' if it's broken?
I've had my IBM laptop for two years now, no laptop bag at all.
Just toss it in my backpack, stack books on it, lean against the wall with it in my backpack(on the train while it's shacking etc).
No problems at all. I mean....none.
By all logic it should have broken by now; it just hasn't.
Neither of these care.
And why should they? They're just interested in Linux as far as the server market.
Truth is that linux is a horrible gaming platform.
Most gamers just want to play games. They don't want to recompile the kernel to play. They want to put the disk in and click "play" and that it.

eBay removes all EQ auctions due to them being against the EULA. (All EQ items are property of Sony etc..)
The reason DDR was used is because there have been COUNTLESS tests done with RAMBUS.
The whole goal was to see how well it'd do with DDR now that it supports it.
