But keep it mind that it's wartime. IIRC, the Supreme Court has ruled that the government *is* allowed to suspend/limit certain freedoms if it is deemed essential to national security during periods of conflict.
I don't like it any more than you do, but there really are terrorists out there trying to kill us, and in the short-term I'm prepared to accept less-transparent government practices and constrained freedoms.
When will governments learn? It doesn't matter if you're the USA or China -- it's impossible to filter the internet at the ISP side. It can only be filtered at the client side. Let the mums & dads who have children buy one of the innovative internet filtering programs out there (Net Nanny, etc.), and the rest of us can enjoy the raw & unfiltered internet the way we like it. If we just do it that way, it's a victory for free speech AND good parenting.
Manufacturing fuel is, universally, a bad idea. It invariably takes more energy to make the fuel than you get back out of it, thus dooming the whole process. Only fuels which occur naturally have ever been (or will ever be) viable.
All these next-generation long-range wireless specifications are starting to confuse me. How many different wireless cards will I need to use all the different technologies, and will they all be integrated into my laptop?
I highly recommend TrueCrypt for your encryption needs. It essentially creates an encrypted file of a desired size which you can copy wherever you like, which the application mounts like a removable drive when you need to encrypt/decrypt stuff. The program even has a traveller mode that you can run without installation. Only requirement is that you have admin rights on the PC.
Oh, and if you do have to swim for it. ..just make sure the drive is in a ziploc bag:)
I confess that I haven't used Yahoo! mail, but I love GMail so much, I don't know why I'd even try.
Recently I had a dispute with my university over an enrolment issue, where they claimed I hadn't taken a certain action. All I had to do was search through my GMail archives, and boom, proof that I had indeed taken the correct action.
I'm doing a Bachelor of Software Engineering (graduating this November) at the University of Canberra, and virtually the entire degree has been a joke. The actual coding skills you pick are rudimentary at best -- you spend the majority of your time doing Project Management and Information Systems Management without learning anything significant about the major programming languages. I personally hope to become a games programmer, and I've had to learn virtually all the skills for that profession independently.
So in short, my experience at Uni has been pretty crap. Don't know if that's the general trend, but as someone who wants to become a programmer, I've found the majority of it totally useless.
You can download it here
I didn't know TransACT used linux though. They're an Australian Capital Territory-based telco, and IMHO, not that great. I prefer Foxtel + ADSL over TransACT.
I used eTax to do my tax return last financial yar, and it was actually quite straightforward and easy to use.
And I agree that it's not worth the government's time or money to create cross-platform software that is only used once a year by such a small portion of computer users.
Is it just me, or does 3 years of jail seem excessive for sending annoying emails??? I dunno about you, but I'm getting really concerned about excessive punishments being imposed for relatively minor offenses in the US.
I mean we could eliminate double parking by armputating the left hand of anyone who gets caught doing it. ..but that's neither ethical nor justifiable.
"Hokay, this is Melbawn, mayte, Melbawn, and in Melbawn you hev to make hook turn. Do you know where the f*ck you are, mayte? Do you know where the f*ck you are??? Melbawn!! And in Melbawn, because of tram, you hev to go left to go right!!"

Indeed! My office uses Microsoft Exchange for most of our communications, and it is an essential part of our business infrastructure

Not all songs are equally good. . . .why should they all cost the same?

If only Newegg would open up to international shipping. . .
UFIA is also an acronym for "Unwanted Finger In Anus"
Watch Aussie rugby sometime:)
Mal Maninga smell ma finga!!
English is inconsistent. For example, we have "steering wheels" (and not "steeringwheels") but we also have "machineguns"
Uhhh, actually, most Australians are descended of Englsh/Irish settlers.
I'm so sick of Indian bloody telemarketers calling. I just hang up on them straight away now. >_
Why is this making news again? I saw a documentary on it on the discovery channel ages ago.
We're talking 0.75 degrees here. Big farking whoop. When the average temperature goes up by 10 degrees, I'll start to care about global warming.

I blogged about the previous downgrader hoax and am now looking forward to running sweet, sweet, forbidden code.
:D
Three cheers for the real hackers!!

Seriously. I love you, GMail.
"Smaller and less massive"? Are they also more effective and less ineffective than previous designs?

Does Canberra count as a major metropolitan area? Oh please please please please please. . .

Yeah, blocking .xxx would block some pornography.
.com porn sites.
Now you just need to worry about the 50 million
I oppose it cuz it's a move by a technologically inept administration to pander to its moral majority.
I live in the ACT, and you see speed cameras EVERY SINGLE DAY here. So bad. . . >_
