Consider though, that many people who pirated Windows are more computer savvy. Pirating Windows isn't THAT easy.
People that pirate Windows have:
Installed their own OS (these days, it's trickier in Windows than you'd think).
Patched and updated it.
Hacked it again to get SP2 to work.
In this case, they've disabled the WGA update and/or disabled it in some way.
These people aren't illiterate computer users like that grandma that everyone brings up. It's very possible that they'll be smart enough to look for an alternative. And considering that many games run in Wine (so I hear, I've only tried a few (with success)), it's not really so farfetched. All told though, I would be very surprised if Microsoft did this. I'm sure they're aware of the threat and would much rather have pirates use Windows for free than abandon it in frustration forever.
I hate to disagree with you about this, but here we are. Maybe my moral beliefs tell me that human sacrifice pleases my god. If there are people who have these moral beliefs, and I'm sure there are at least a few, well, the government has plenty business legislating that it's wrong.
To many people, stem cell research is very similar since they consider embryos humans. It's just sacrificing humans for science this time. Woah, turns out this issue is more complicated than you think. I have no difficulties seeing the other side of the argument here.
I know, probably a redundant post, but, I'm finding it's easy to justify the purchase of a Wii just for the retro games. A lot of N64 games I missed out on don't run so good in emulators. I never got a chance to play the first Paper Mario... Also, I'm one of those heathans that never played Chrono Trigger. I'm hoping it'll be available. If not, I can play it on my computer, but it never feels as legit...
The HD was a Maxtor drive.. take that to mean whatever you want, but I personally also avoid Maxtor these days.
The DVD settlement was not in the form of a gift certificate for the Apple store or anything like this. It was "special deals" on various Apple merchandise, and no, none of it was reasonably priced. Most of it was extraneous stuff I wouldn't want anyway. The most interesting was the ram, but the price was not a "special deal." I remember looking up the same ram in price watch and it being like 20 dollars or something. It was pretty insulting to be honest. "Sorry about selling you a crappy computer, SPEND MORE MONEY!!!"
You are technically correct in saying that OS X ran on the imac. But I would say that crawl is far more appropriate. The early versions of OS X were not the most responsive, as I am sure you are aware. It was terrible on my computer even after maxing the ram out.
As for the fahrenheit thing, I completely retract that conversion. Yes I just typed it into google and went with it. Stupid mistake.. I found 68 degrees a bit surprising at the time.
Sorry, but you got lucky. I had bad luck, and now I don't buy Apple products anymore. The last Mac I owned was an iMac in 2000. After a year, the HD was very unreliable and actually necessitated reinstalling the OS from time to time. The monitor had some weird thing where it would flicker and vibrate a lot. I was compensated through a class action lawsuit against Apple because the DVD player didn't actually work. For this, I got "special deals" on Apple merchandise including like 80 dollars for 64MB of ram or something ridiculous. It was a rip off even at the time.
OS X came out shortly after that and I was thoroughly pissed that my computer was rendered virtually unusable after 1 OS upgrade cycle. I bought a fairly cheap custom made PC from a small vendor and the thing was (and still is) incredibly reliable.
It's anecdotal evidence, just like yours. Maybe it's getting to be time to forgive, the idea of occasionally being pulled into Vista for various apps I need and Linux doesn't have (yet, fingers crossed) makes me wretch.
By the way, the overheating isn't some little issue like you make it seem. It has nothing to do with form factor. It's a difference of 20 degrees CELSIUS. That's 68 degrees Fahrenheit! It's the thermal paste and it's easily fixable if you don't mind voiding your warranty. And it is seriously one more reason why I just can't bring myself to buy Apple products right now.
Mahjong is one of the oldest games known to man. According to legend, this game was supposedly invented more than 4,000 years ago by the bored wives of the Chinese emperor. There are many versions available for the PC, particularly among the multitude of Linux distributions. Perhaps this explains why Microsoft decided to include its take on this ancient exercise of luck and skill.
I absolutely agree with you on this, Linux is cake to install compared to Windows. But the problem is, the vast majority of Windows users have never installed Windows. It came on their Dell. They don't use Windows. They use Dell. Of course, you can replace Dell with the PC manufacturer of your choice, but the point is the same.
Considering that every single Nintendo console has launched at $200, he's probably not that far off. I would be very surprised if the launch price wasn't $200.
I was pretty much an ardent Windows user a year ago. Now, I can clearly see that linux is much easier to install and use than Windows. Granted, I am a power user/programmer type, and most people aren't, but regardless, the problem is, most people don't install either OS and don't realize how difficult Windows truly is.
People just don't experience Linux and Windows on the same level. Nobody realizes how difficult and time consuming it is to install and configure Windows. Installing it is a pain and it's even harder to make a dual boot system. You have to hunt down drivers for all your periphrials and most of the time, linux comes with this stuff working out of the box. You have to find and hunt down programs you want to use. Again, linux usually has the stuff you want by default.
All we need for linux to be adopted by the masses, is for Dell and other major computer sellers to make dual boot computers. That is ALL.
If this could happen, it would be a matter of time, probably within a couple years, for Windows to lose its stranglehold on computing. They should assemble the computer with hardware that is supported nicely and linux, and it should come with a nice friendly linux already installed and set up to support all their hardware. Then perhaps a custom distribution could come with the computer so it could be reinstalled easily.
People then have a choice at start up (but it would initially default to booting Windows). All it takes is a LITTLE exploration, and they'd be experiencing the beauty of linux.
Maybe we should start writing letters to Dell and the like. I've been thinking about doing it myself, but if there was a "movement", they might listen.
So Revolutionary! Wii've never seen anything like it! I nINTEND-O to buy one for 500 dollars, but I think I might pay some MARIO and get the 60 gb version, that'd be just PEACHY. Actually I'd say it looks the SAMUS (same as) another controller... Can someone LINK me to some information regarding this controller. Still though, BOWSERS (that's what I say when I'm impressed).
Does this deserve to be +5 insightful? It's got tons of grammatical errors, and it meanders around points to such a degree that I'm not sure what his opinion actually is. And I'm not sure I agree with him saying Tetris is a game you don't have to think about. Pikmin is more thoughtless in my opinion. And is it any surprise that pikmin, now about 4 years old, is not outselling tetris, a timeless classic just released on for DS?
Yes. There's no other way this could have happened. The most reasonable explanation is there was a flood so massive that water covered the entire surface earth for a month and ten days.
Then Noah sent a bird off and he returned with an olive branch???? Was it a leaf or a branch? Either way, there'd be none of either because all the trees on the planet would be dead and their leaves would have washed away.
I'm getting off my point, when are you guys gunna stop believing this silly crap? I'm sure there were floods, even big ones, just as there are now. It was especially relevant to the lives of people at the time since most people lived by oceans, lakes, or rivers (and they still do). But the flood myth is silly! Stop injecting it everywhere you crazy fundamentalists!
Thank you! I've always held the belief that yeah, Microsoft is evil and all that, but we're lucky we got them instead of Apple. Apple wants a stranglehold on hardware AND software. Apple has (at least in the past, choose a time period that pleases you) sold ridiculously overpriced and inferior hardware. They, in my opinion, would be a greater obstacle to progress than Microsoft.
I hope that Microsoft loses marketshare, but I hope it goes to linux more than Apple. More freedom, not less.
I agree, that's a lot of zeros. But you must also consider that the average temperature of the earth is 288 Kelvin. Copying the method of your calculations, that's 1.04e21 calories.
That's 1,040,000,000,000,000,000,000 cal! 4.01e18 cal is 0.38% of this. So we're dealing with a 0.38% increase in energy on the earth's surface.
I see you've played Textsies Linksies before...
Hehe, I've had a lot of trouble getting WMP10 to stream media from the interweb when running as anything less than admin. That's just glorious.

I love that this is presented as a serious piece of news!
This belongs on webcomic or something.
I'm a consumer, so broadband should be free ;)

Cant slashdots user's learn to use apostrophe's properly?
Heh. Well, I guess they've got the overpopulation thing solved.
1) If there are as few chinese women as I'm lead to believe, their population is going to dip waaaay more than their government intended.
2) There are going to be a loooot of male chinese virgins.

They keep stealing all our best features!

I'm just so sorry!!!
I have made a huge mistake of ignorance!!!!
I should have thought to use a Wikipedia link. The Nintendo 64 cost $199 at launch in the United States.
Wrong again. I know it's just the first link on google, but IGN says Nintendo 64 launched in 1996 for $199.99. Thanks for playing.

Let's sacrifice the quality for people who don't know what they need to please those that don't know what they want!
Sarcasm!

Woah I spun it in the opposite direction!
Broken window fallacy.
