  1. Re:They -buried- the reports? on 3D Displays May Be Hazardous To Young Children · · Score: 2, Informative

There's a big difference between looking in a mirror and looking at a 3D display. The difference is the same as the problem that 3D displays cause for your eyes. When you look in a mirror your eyes are focusing on the objects reflected in the mirror, NOT on the mirror. When you look at a 3D display your eyes are focused ON THE SCREEN, not on where the pseudo 3D objects would actually be. It is this difference between where our brain thinks an object is and where our eyes are actually focusing that could make 3D displays dangerous for your eyesight in large doses. It is not the same as looking at things in the real world.

Not true AC. As a long time PC gamer I have been very impressed with the quality and workability of iPhone games. All my gaming is now on the iPhone. The PC gathers dust. And yes I mostly play shooters.

  4. Re:Why does this matter? on Games Fail To Portray Gender and Ethnic Diversity · · Score: 1, Insightful

This comment gets rated 'Insightful'? To me it shows a complete lack of understanding of how media constructed 'norms' over time influence societies norms. The discussion of race and gender representation in computer games is long overdue and is just as valid as such discussions about film and television, perhaps more so seeing how games are played proportionally more by younger people. If you don't think this discussion is valid then IMHO you don't understand the influence of media in creating role-models.

  6. Re:This. Game. Sucks. on Looking Back At Far Cry 2 · · Score: 1

I agree. I liked this game a lot because of what they were trying to achieve. It is much more ambitious and interesting than something like Crysis. Although the OPs points are valid this is a different type of game - where getting around and knowing where you are are part of the challenge. As much as these things frustrate they also immersed me more in the world of the game. I'd love to see this game with another year of work done on it to really bring the non-linearity and the politics to the fore. I initially played as if i was really the character and made decisions about which factions i would work for based on whose politics i agreed with. It was frustrating to realise that I HAD to do missions for the right wing militia after a while. I would have loved if the story went in different directions based on which factions you supported.

  7. Re:DRM is pointless on DRM-Free Music Spells Trouble? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Your notion of 'music' is limited and dated. Touring and music creation are not inextricably linked. Much great music has been made by artists for whom it isn't economically feasible to tour (independant bedroom producers, huge experimental orchestras). Much music is made now for recorded delivery and can not be meaningfully replicated 'live'. Your idea of music 'authenticity' (i.e. bands who can play instruments well on stage) is confusing music and sport. Your ears tell you what is good music or not. Performance is a different skill altogether.

What the hell is wrong with the US people? Why has rejection of evolution become a necessary part of believing in god? If you North Americans reject science I am worried that other countries, ones culturally colonised by the US such as Australia will follow suite. This would clearly be a disaster. Scientists over there clearly need to get with the new mind control program. You guys have got to get on TV and you've got to be FUNNY. That's right MAKE FUN of creationists, not with elitist in-jokes like the Flying Spaghetti Monster but with broad, undeniably funny humour. See Dave Chappelle and Sasha Baron Coen for inspiration. The best way to undermine ridiculous ideas is with humour. God bless Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.

  10. Re:I hope you're kidding on Premiere Back on Mac · · Score: 1

Premiere Pro 1.0 (PC only) was a direct reaction to Final Cut Pro and it was a lot better than pervious versions. It took a lot from FCP and was even a bit more logical and easier. That said it lacked a couple of power features that kept FCP in the lead IMO. The exciting thing about Premiere Pro on the Mac is its integration with After Effects which is still a terrific program. Being able to cut in PP and then online (finish) in After Effects without having to go through a cumbersome conversion process would be a welcome improvement to my workflow.

  11. Re:Well, duh. I could have told you that on DVD Format War Already Over? · · Score: 1

I have heard so much of attitude towards HD online but there really is a much bigger difference between HD and SD (standard def) then there is is between CD and SACD. I don't mean a technical difference, I mean a difference that Joe Sixpack will notice. HD really is a lot better, if you have a display that can show it. Most people don't, So what makes me think it'll catch on? Because it closes the gap between watching DVDs at home and a proven popular experience - the cinema. Maybe neither Blue-ray nor HD-DVD will catch on but the HD format is inevitable and will be pushed for by average punters IMHO when they see the difference. People are much more visually aware than they are aurally where almost no-one could pick the difference between CD and SACD.

  16. Try a tablet on Is Horse the New Mouse? · · Score: 1

I have been getting pretty bad RSI from using a regular wheel mouse for intensive video editing work for number of years. I have now finally found a much better solution - A pen and tablet type thing. I use a fairly small one about 4inces across and I've further reduced the operating area of it so that I can get around the screen faster. Once you get used to it (a week or so) I have to say it is much faster and less imapctfull on my body than any mouse. It's just like writing. Most professional video editors seem to use them but I would recommend small ones as a total mouse replacement!

  17. Turn your fans down! on 5 Simple Steps to a Quieter PC · · Score: 1

The number one easiest, cheapest way to quieten your PC is to turn to the speed of all your fans down. Most fans in you PC can run at half their full speed without drastically upping the temperature. Especially noisy are the little fans on video cards and the Northbridge chips. I have soldered little potentiometers to these suckers to dial them down. My system is running in a pretty hot climate here in Australia and I've got it down to below Mac G5 levels of quietness - with out spending much and it's still within safe operating temperatures. It makes all the difference to me. Of course if you can get rid of those little fans and replace them with heatsinks or heat-pipe coolers - all the better. Those things are not that expensive and they make a big difference. Zalmann makes a great little 'Fanmate' controller that I use to turn down all my fans (except the PSU where I have an auto speed one). Turn those suckers down!
