  1. Re:Too bad! on Barrier to Web 2.0 — IT Departments · · Score: 1

I second that... While I understand that IT is there to help the business users get their job done, we also have the obligation to ensure overall network and data integrity. If IT lets every user access to new, cool, must-have "critical collaboration" tool, we wouldn't really be doing our job. Everyone wants it now. We should act as responsible gatekeepers who help users decide if the web tool dejour really should be implemented across the enterprise, or just on your personal laptop at home.

My kids comes home with unclear math problems, and I re-teach them... and mostly having a good time doing it. You'd not be doing it for money, but usually the benefits are acceptable.

I guess ppl who blog their whole vacation experience are not posting in this thread.

I am a bit of both when it comes to vacation. I bring a laptop and cell phone. Laptops is for checking personal emails, downloading pictures, and looking up any itinerary changes. Cell phone is because if I'm meeting with someone, I don't want to stop at a pay phone. Also, for emergencies.

On the other hand, as a net engineer for a small company, the amount of knowledge overlap between the IT Director and Net Admin is very small, so even if I planned my vacation carefully, there will still be something that breaks that the others will either not be able to fix, or not fix quickly. I make myself available for emergencies.

I do like one of the former poster's "away message"...

"If you need to get in touch with me before then, please reconsider your options."

Guns has one purpose: to launch a projectile in one direction. The projectile does not have to hurt living things. Even if a gun is used more as a weapon, it is still not designed to hurt living things. You can make the arguments that some bullets are design to hurt living things, but not the gun itself. Can you say that a night-stick is design to hurt living things? Yes, because it is use to hit other people. But it can also be use to restraint another being. Still not a evil thing.

Hong Kong does Rock, indeed! However, as a HK born Chinese, it's only so good... 1. Beautiful City, that is pretty filthy. Blow your nose and you'll see. 2. It's a city with a huge social divide. The Have's have TONS, the Have-Not's scrapes by. 3. It's free, until the Beijing say it's not. That happens whenever they feel like locking up journos. I could go on. Having said ALL THAT, it is still a place of laissez faire businesses. I should find a job in HK!

  8. Available now in China on Lik-Sang Is Out Of Business · · Score: 1

First of all, I can't believe Lik-Sang would roll over for this... HK is no longer under British rule, so unless the Chinese Government tells them to stop, Sony can sod off. Second, the amount of questionable retailers in China is simply astonishing. Lik-Sang should open up shop as Li-Song in China with a copy of their customer database.

We are currently using MSCT with XP Home, because we realized there's no point in getting XP Pro on a kiosk machine that will never be on our AD. Actually works VERY well. In fact, it's easier to lock down stand-alone machines, if you don't care about being in a domain.

Ditto. However, we do perfer that the request is sent by a "director" level manager before we send out the report, so that more the one person knows about the existance of a particular report concerning a particular employee. We don't jump for anyone who has some type of supervisory title / job function.

This goes for granting read access to other's email.
