The price could well be right... but the catch is that Nintendo won't just be selling them on store shelves as if they were a souped up game console. Nintendo especially (along with other console makers) don't want just any software being published for their systems; they usually only allow verified developers to purchase their development equipment and SDKs. So while it might be affordable, unless you have really good connections they are likely not going to allow you to purchase one.

Quick comment on that last line; making Mac only games is better for who, exactly? Game developers would lose 90% of their potential PC market, which mainly from killing them financially, would help ensure that no one may get to see another game from them. While it would be nice to see more games on Macs, Mac-only is definitely not the way to go.

The GBA Castlevania games (and the more recent, and equally excellent looking Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow for the DS) are really very polished, with smooth animation and a lot of artistic detail. Lumines was great and all, but I really think there are more deserving alternatives for good looking 2d games.

I think you're missing the point of Nintendo's strategy. It's obviously true that PS2 and Xbox games sold more than GC games last generation. But what Nintendo is going after is the rest of the gamers - not those who play PS2 and Xbox as much. If 10% of all people are hardcore gamers, thsoe who last generation bought all the games, Nintendo is going for (at lesat some of) the other 90% - and if they're successful, this is why they're poised to 'win' next generation.

No, it isn't, and I wish people would stop posting bogus analogies. Using your example, a fitting comparison would be if Snow White had some extra pornographic footage hidden on the DVD it came on (for example), and then someone found a way to get that scene to play in place of another in the movie. The problem is that the nude skin is present on the disc, which wasn't disclosed to the ESRB - not the modification itself.

That is strictly against company policy and I can assure you they would be severely reprimanded for that. I say this having left because I was sick of lying to customers to get sales, as this tactic isn't really that rare - but if you say something, you can be sure they will get in trouble for it.

I know you can use the touch screen as an analog control device with your right thumb to aim, so if it is as customizable as I remember, I don't see why you couldn't use it. Also, Mario 64 DS (and possibly other games, though I don't know of any offhand) also allow you to use the touch screen as analog input.

I don't really think you can say that all programs (assuming you're talking about games here rather than other types of software) should be fixed if they're not accessable. Otherwise, you're going to have nothing but slow, high contrast, high feedback, low skill puzzle games. Unfortunately, not everyone enjoys this type of game - some people want stylized, fast paced, and very hard games. Some games really need things like sound or low contrast graphics to make the game what it is - imagine playing Metal Gear Solid 3 where the enemies stand right out from the background - what's the point of camouflage? How about Quake based off of turn-based commands so those who can't move quickly don't get left out? My point is that while I'm all for making games accessable when they can be, you can't always expect every game to cater to these requirements.

  14. Re:Power supply important? on Hiper Type-R Modular Blue Line 580W PSU Review · · Score: 0

Actually, I can vouch for the importance of a quality PSU. When I first built my current computer 3 years ago, it was my first that I had made from scratch so I didn't know too much about compatability issues and what not. I have a dual processor motherboard, power hungry video card (in this case GeForce 6800 GT, requires its own molex connection), 2 high speed hard disks (7200 RPM, not the highest, but still) plus two CD-RWs, a good chunk of ram, and 4 fans for the HDDs and case (plus two for the 2 CPUs).

The first six months of the computers' life (graphics card was a GeForce 4 at the time) I was constantly getting crashes - mostly in games or when running a lot of programs or doing processor intensive work, but it was all the time, and I had no idea what was wrong. I tried everything - new ram, different configurations, months worth of driver changes and registry tweaks. Luckily (sort of), the fan in my PSU went and, well I leave the computer on while at work/school, but let's just say I was lucky my house didn't burn down.

I ordered another, but I didn't want that to happen again, so I replaced my stock ~350 watt PSU with a fairly expensive 550 watt name brand one - not only have I not had any more crashes, but before I got this new video card I noticed a definite increase in the quality of my 3d games. There was no video lag (which I attributed to the video card just being outdated already), and everything worked great. Sort of ironically, I looked at my video card manufacturer's forums shortly after and saw PSU problems being one of the first things that should be checked when having problems with the video card. So anyway, it is a little more important than it seems, not only to things that suck a lot of power such as video cards, but as someone else mentioned, if you're not getting an uninterrupted flow of current, you could see similar problems (such as the random crashing/restarting)

No one's alienating anyone. The DS will have it's own network, already out in Japan, for multiplayer DS games and downloadable content like mini-games which reside in the DS's memory until power off. The Revolution is also supposed to have wifi capabilities. While nothing has hinted that they will work together, nothing is hinting that when the Revolution is released (which is at least a year off anyway) that the DS's network would stop being supported.

"Nintendo's latest handheld games device, the DS, also comes with a version of wi-fi built-in, and Mr Iwata said Nintendo will offer a free net connection service to DS owners, enabling them to play games against each other at no charge."

"He also revealed that Revolution will come with wi-fi connectivity built-in."

There is nothing whatsoever in that article, or the hour long speech (which I have listened to, available at Nintendo's website if you want to hear for yourself), that suggests that the DS and Revolution will be interconnectable. The DS has wireless, and in Japan a central network to connect DS systems, and the Revolution will also have some wireless functionality. No one has ever said they would work together. If any speculation to this is made at all, it would lead to the next Game Boy system connecting with the Revolution, not the DS.

    This isn't exactly true.

There's a wifi service in Japan for use with the DS now, coming to the US soon. It's used for downloading content and playing multiplayer games with your DS. There has also been mention about the Revolution having wifi capabilities, to form a wireless network between Revolution consoles. There has been no mention anywhere about the DS being able to connect to the Revolution. The only information close to that suggests that Nintendo's next Game Boy system, not the DS, will connect to the Revolution (if anything does).

I just want to make 2 quick points here...

First, you mention TV... If you compare what the article was saying to your example, then most people watch TV 20-30 hours a week, but the 15 percent that watch TV 80-120 hours a week are the addicted ones. I don't think they're saying 10-15 or 25 hours a week of something is what makes an addiction; but the fact that you're doing something 4 times as much as most others is.

Second point: I had no interest in MMORPGs until my friends got me to play FFXI with them when it came out in October 2003 for the PC. Maybe because it was my first MMORPG, I don't know, but I spent literally 1/2 my time playing - 12 hours a day - for a good six months. After that for a year or so, it dropped to 1/3 my time. I dropped a class in college during those months and failed two others so I could play the game more. From release (Oct 2003) until about June 2004, I had clocked in 100 days worth of play time in the game.

I don't know if you've ever played one of these games, but there is a true addiction - the game can be so much fun it's almost like a drug. In FFXI, there's actually a screen when you log in to play that reminds you not to forget about your friends, family, school or work... something we all had a good laugh about... I'm still stuck to that game, despite cancelling 3 times. Eventuallly I'll end up replaying the music, hearing about friends who still play, or I'll see something online that will just get my hopes up again. For me, and at least a few others I know of, it really is like an addiction.
