That was exactly my reaction when I first read this headline. Ever since I first moved here a decade ago, I'd been meaning to check him out at Iridium before it was too late, but stupidly never made the time. The same thing happened with Tommy Flanagan with his regular gigs in town.

It's amazing to me that these musicians continue to perform live shows with as much passion as ever to the very end of their lives. I'll never forgive myself for missing out on this, their incredible life-long gift to the world.

For example, porting the OS X antialiasing over to Windows rather than using the native ClearType just seems weird (almost to the extent that I don't believe Ars Technica).

It's somewhat useful from a frontend web development perspective in that I don't have to KVM over to my Mac to see exactly what fonts will look like in OS X.

But I agree that for the average user ignoring his/her personal settings is not good for usability.

Ditto here. I actually liked SC4 the best. Maybe it was just the same SimCity with little more than extra polish, but that polish drew me into the game more than any of its predecessors did. And I really like a lot of the mods coming out of the Simtropolis community. Some of them may be relatively small things that have little-to-no impact on the game mechanics, like street/road/avenue-top bus stops, or new park tiles (although the former did greatly alter my zoning habits). But in my case it's these small additions and new details that aggregate into the game that I still enjoy playing all these years after it was released.

I think we'll all have to grow accustomed to the likelihood that generations of our descendants growing up on other planets will evolve, physically and socially, in a way significantly divergent from what we term "human" based on our Earth experience. Even if they lived on Mars or the Moon or other moons/planets here within our solar system, the physical environment would skew them away from the way we developed here, probably in a significant way -- and that's likely to their advantage, and would serve testament to our adaptability over the course of some generations.

I mean, look at the cultural differences we have between continents, much less in between different planets and star systems.

Though I couldn't begin to tell you how that works...something like the negative of a radio wave that progresses forward in time can go backwards, or something. *shrug*

  9. Re:Combine this with 15min quick charge on USB Batteries · · Score: 1

The difference with Rayovac's "I-C3" technology is that it pairs "intelligent" chargers with "intelligent" batteries, meaning that the chargers monitor batteries' status for optimal charging, and the batteries also contain monitoring circuitry themselves and provide information to the charger to prevent the charge at any given moment from exceeding the tolerances of the batteries. Hence why they can charge so efficiently.

I love my Rayovac batteries. They do get hot (the chargers, when fast-charging I-C3 batteries, have cooling fans; they don't turn on with normal NiMH batteries which are charged at a slower rate), but it's not beyond what the batteries can take. They've been serving me well for a few years now, in cameras, portable audio equipment, remote controls, and various other things for which I need batteries quickly.

    Here's a bit more on the I-C3s.

copying other artists' styles is such a common practice in art that it's more noteworthy to see an original style than to see a copied (albeit altered) style.

Agreed whole-heartedly! As a visual artist, myself, it is nigh impossible to create something that isn't influenced by established styles. In fact, that was part of my education at Pratt Institute in NYC - learning the styles and accomplishments of Miro and countless others, and incorporating some of their ideas in clever, new executions. Likely, this sort of thing is more subtle than Google's outright references, but that could easily be argued as a subjective perception.

If somebody made a visual reference or "quotation" of my work, I would be flattered, to say the least. I guess Google's main mistake was verbally attributing the inspiration for the restyled logo to Joan Miro. But in my opinion as an artist, this was a best-intentioned and visually witty tribute.

It was just as simple as compiling OS X for x86 to have common hardware for all three - in which case I wouldn't credit Apple with creating the platform; just joining in the party.

A big part of what makes security software work as well as they do today (whether it's good or bad, I'll leave that up to you) is that multiple different programs are used concurrently. No one basket gets all the eggs - at least, not in my case where I have three programs simultaneously scanning for malware and viruses. Last month when Sophos released an update to their OS X software that reported false positives, people reacted by jumping the corporate ship in favor of smaller open source boats. But the real lesson is that nobody's perfect.

Linus's mantra about more eyes on bugs translates well to antivirus software.
