I trust/like Amazon since it was founded, in fact I did my first "online purchase" from there. As I like them, even purchased e-books from them, I went to their movie store when it was announced.
Is Amazon having bad financial times or going out of business? Amazon movie store is more windows only than Microsoft.com itself!
It requires.NET 2.0, Windows Media Player (latest, which doesn't even exist on mac), IE...
This is not Amazon.com like, this is "I will start a media dotcom and get sponsorship from MS media division" like.
At the end, we have seen what Microsoft (Amazon) and Apple offers, lets hope Real Networks come up with a solution for HDTV/Dolby Digital owners, these offerings for such price are a joke.
It really sounds unbelievable since the people will pay $15 a movie will likely have a HD capable TV/Display. Those are the guys who wouldn't care about the hassle, low quality to pirate movies.
Stereo? Hitchikers Guide to Galaxy original region 2 DVD is here, it is true PAL widescreen (720x576) MPEG 2 low compressed and Dolby Digital 5.1 (could be EX (7.1) too, don't have any tool to check right now)
Checking from Amazon, its DVD is $13.99 right now. Stereo? Even the sitcoms/series from 1980-90s have Pro-Logic data, they aren't stereo.
Pay $15 and run it Stereo over Prologic II hoping they didn't lose "hints"? It is "so 90s" and "passe" for movie watching people;)
I hate comparing online media (the future) to real media but they start a movie store in 2006, Quicktime (Framework) has 5.1 capability for ages and they come up with STEREO, joke like resolution with H264 which will give that codec a needless bad name and so on...
Looks like as a HDTV convert, I will keep looking for Sony BluRay to drop price a bit or come with a external firewire solution.
I hope Apple doesn't trust to their cult-like fanbase since I see amazing comments claiming 640x480 is not bad in 2006... Argh. 640x480 is a so low resolution in these times that can be played very easily without losing a single pixel via single cable (composite). If it is intended only for that resolution, forget component, even S-video is pointless.
For people blinded enough by zealotry: If 640x480 is not bad, switch to it right now, you know "System Preferences" and "Displays" and get used to watching DVDs in that mode:)
I started to become extremely paranoid. Some guys invent/implement a pure anarchic network like Tor or setup their own "internet" which can't be traced.
Imagine the impact on those govt. types...
It becomes story in media and months later, purely illegal content like child porn etc starts to appear. I wonder if those guys posting child porn which becomes reason of these actions smokes Morley brand of cigarettes:)
Give away the Vista betas to ordinary end users rather than "selected" IT media professionals (!?) who tries to install it on Apple Macintosh machines and some weirdly configured laptops and whine as it didn't work right.
I really started to think Apple has very strict NDA policies on OS previews exactly because of potential of reviews like that. Imagine a guy posting review(!) saying it surprisingly didn't work on his home built PowerPC machine:)
I remember to have postponed my Macintosh buying decision because I have read how "horrible" OS X (beta!) is and Apple will never, ever able to deliver it and soon go out of business back in the day.
Later I figured people were happily running OS 9 very happily on their Macs but it was too late, I bought Wintel already.
Giving away OS betas is wrong I think and MS should "invent" that Apple NDA/Policy too.
I am sure my Quad G5 (It is 5x slower than Intel, hehe) has some evil DRM stuff embedded inside. My cell phone (which is not smart!) SonyEricsson K700 (likely MIPS) has DRM protection even for simple ringtones, themes.
I mean DRM is what industry wants, when industry want something, the vendors implement it via hardware or software. The only "hope" for consumer is to stay away from DRM/TPM based stuff. Well, it doesn't happen:)
Basic example: iPod has DRM yes? It runs on ARM Arch CPU, which is RISC based. See? Nothing related to CPU. Remember that device was actually commercially "Hacked" by Real Networks just to add Real format with DRM support making Apple nuts.
If we are speaking about POWER family (not PowerPC) Opteron is very "simple" compared to Power5 or soon to be released Power6 family.
It seems Wiki's enterprise/CPU sections got rid of CPU fanboys, zeaolots (both CISC and RISC) lately and could be trusted for neutral information regarding these stuff.
As a quad G5 owner thanks to Apple move to Intel, like-a-joke non serious claims like "5x faster than G5!" and entire Apple fanboy base becoming Intel fanatics, I felt forced to get all the information which I normally wouldn't care about.
XBox 360 is running a specialised yet Power based CPU having 3 cores for example. PS3 has a very strange CPU which is also specially designed for gaming and entertainment purposes. Still, based on Power.
Based on Wiki, a typical car owner may have purchased 8 or more Power embedded processors along with the car.
also if you own a Power based anything (including Mac) http://www.power.org/ (Official site of Arch board)
I am ordinary end user just happen to like PowerPC/RISC platform for my computing needs and I spared my time, pricey data (Opera Mini+GPRS) to read those articles last night. Funny co-incidence that same time a person who has connection to "NY Times" brand was writing such BS article about how Freescale effected by Apple gave up G4.
Lets give a clue: Apple was the smallest customer of FreeScale semiconductor powerpc based CPUs. Unbelievable but true. That is why they (and IBM,recently hating/got rid of end user customers) didn't CARE about Apple move.
"Freescale CEO Michel Mayer said in an email to employees that he was disappointed, but noted that the company's Mac business accounts for less than three per cent of total revenue.
'It is increasingly clear that the center of technology innovation is moving away from the personal computer,' he added. "
Yes, 3%!
I started to wonder if Apple gave PowerPC or PowerPC vendors gave up Apple.
Apple did something genius to get rid of any third party company whining or malfunctioning software. They basically offer a framework and everything uses that framework either GUI or Terminal way.
Microsoft could of course do the same. They didn't care.
Disc burning has nothing to do with Antivirus btw. Viruses exist because of their lack of security measures, popularity because of a monopolist actions.
If I was using Windows and Windows came with "free antivirus" , first thing I would go to a real security company like F-Secure (prot) or Kaspersky and buy a real software to rely on. Did Roxio sales "explode" because of their bundle on XP or in fact they lost huge numbers of potential customers because their bundle was crap?
Check Nero AG sales and amazing prestige for the answer;) People made it a part of their workflow in $100M Movie projects, you can't "buy" this thing with bundling, you can only earn it.
As a side note, if Nero guys released OS X software which does everything their Windows version does, I would buy/trial it immediately. It doesn't exist. Roxio Toast exists and while its fans say it is excellent software, I remember my wasted CD-R's on windows days and basically ignore it.
For people never used Windows built in burning: It is pure crap which makes people go and buy real software like Nero immediately and ignore whatever Roxio does as "plus" "real thing" or something.
So, it doesn't serve Roxio at all and in fact hurts their image very bad. In fact I didn't even trial OS X "Toast" after figuring it comes from Roxio, because of my windows memories and nightmare.
Remember if a CD/DVD writer software doesn't work fine, you lose money. (CD-R,DVD-+R media)
People get some wrong impression about MS Office and OS X. It is number one selling software for Macintosh. While I was outside Mac , I saw MS Office and IE for Mac and said "If MS coded that style on windows, they would have many fans". BTW it happens in 2001 or something, while IE for Mac was a good/modern browser having the features added just to IE 7 for windows from that date.
When MS releases a update to MS Office you will see it gets amazing amount of downloads from sites doing counts as Versiontracker. When you check Amazon.com Mac category, you will see it is number 1 selling software for Mac.
While I reply to you in fact I wanted to give information to people checking Slashdot like sites only and get wrong impression. While I am a licensed Papyrus Office ( http://www.rom-logicware.com/ ) user and love it, I can't deny the amazing success of MS Office for Mac.
I heard people claiming MS will give up Mac office etc. because Macs can run Windows or emulate it, it is not the case.
Open Office? Until open source community learns how to treat to people who used to getting polite, informative, friendly (corporate) support...:)
.NET is a joke since it is bound to single OS and single platform, MS Windows.
Java is way to go since Sun is a serious company about Java and sees it as a product, not ammo for additional monopolist practices.
Trust Microsoft for server applications, lock yourself? This may sound very simple for a developer like you but here is what comes to my mind when I hear.NET, it happened just 3 days ago and I lost all my communication with MS.net messenger users:
"Browser not supported
To sign in to Windows Live Account, try upgrading your browser. If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer, please install the latest version. If you are using another browser, try upgrading to the latest version of the browser."
That message appears on OS X standard Safari browser. Not some "hacked", "tweaked", "spoofed" thing. Plain old Safari, standard browser of OS X.
That is why.NET can never be successful, it is not a "product", it is just part of some monopolistic sick minded plan.
After what I lived for 3 days, I HOPE all those billions MS spent to copycat Java will sink!
I can guess where that comment comes from as ex Opera win32 user and now Omniweb for OS X user.
Those Opera guys and other commercial (opera free now) developers keeps "inventing" things to keep the sales up and their users can't stand when a free/opensource software copies the idea/invention and months later one of its fanboys say "Why pay for a browser? Are you stupid? Look Firefox has tabs"
I guess you know the deal already;)
I wonder when will those graphical tabs invented by Omni group http://www.omnigroup.com/images/images-5/gallery.j pg will be "included" in some free/opensource browser or usual suspect Apple Inc. and when will some guy will say I am stupid for buying a browser and "????" has that feature already.:)
As a funny note, that improved printing looks like part of MS IE for Mac (OSX/OS9) which was abandoned by Microsoft.
I spared my 3 seconds to quickly check story. It is "the register" style, a bit troll, flame BUT INSIGHTFUL.
"The idea appeared in Technology Review citing Peter Norvig, director of research at Google, who says these ideas will show up eventually in real Google products - sooner rather than later."
What matters is: Until that guy having such ideas leaves Google, I will make sure I won't use Google for ANYTHING.
That guy and that guys type belongs to lowest quality spyware companies. As Google is USA based it is really time for US Government to start checking Google policies over user privacy and explaining why you shouldn't abandon your ISP mail for Google mail getting tricked by 1 gigabyte (or whatever) and POP3.
How many average users knows what means "nothing is deleted really" or "giving grant to analyse private mail text"?
What makes me afraid about Google is this pyramid scheme like (people having google ads) or no valid reason "fanboy" thing. It means they have "natural lawyers" all over the web marking commentaries as "FUD", moderating comments down, abusing their www board admin powers etc.
It has been years Google was founded and I don't have slightest clue how they claim "Don't be evil" motto nor why people blindly defend Google.
I don't think this story is totally true but cookie expiring 2038,archiving user mails forever, "reading" private mails analysing them to display relevant ads, having zero quality control over advertising including some open source packaging/selling crooks and pirates are TRUE.
I think some people think Google is nice because they run Linux clusters. Ahem, Yahoo runs and supports FreeBSD for YEARS since it was founded and even AOL uses Linux giving their web server for Free. I don't say they are "better" guys but they don't claim to be "better" or "nice" either.
They are not my friend. No "big company" can be my friend.
"ROTFLMAO! Good stuff, I love it when Mac users claim they are the "creme de la creme" of human beings. "
They are. Anyone can afford a $400 mp3 player or a $2000 stylish computer is "A and AB class" in advertisers eyes. It is ADVERTISING thing, it is not about the human quality of the class.
I said "advertisers jargon", Advertisers care about the view of the profile they advertise to. E.g. advertising a Range Rover to a $3000 Mac Pro owner makes more sense than showing it to every $400 PC owner.
Google browserbar does send google private data, their mail keeps spying every private mail indefinately, their site uses a cookie expiring in 2038, they have some people on board which fits more to *24" TV series "CTU" thing and they have zero quality control advertising policy.
That site should start researching such stuff first rather critising AOL for couple of bookmarks added to their CUSTOMERS browser.
I have zero clue how come Google is called "nice guys".
Also this story (this slashdot page) has Google ads on top, dare to install one of the advertised "anti spyware" advertised? Think twice.
If all users of that nice little extension contacted those sites and asked "Are you Microsoft corp. or NY Times Corp.?Why you alienate my OS of choice?" politely, there wouldn't be need for such extension.
If you use that extension, clueless webmaster wins!:)
MS Media division works very aggressively with cheap/free servers on major sites so people will be forced to use windows media clients/plugins and the browser running them best (IE).
That is how that pathetic format without multi layered files, auto speed negotiation etc. is still relevant to people.
OS X people are somehow forced to use a third party plugin these days, Flip4Mac WMV. While it is coded much better than that carbon monster having Tiger issues and PPC only (wmedia player for mac) you can't expect a "official player performance" from it. The problems with DRM etc.
I have to repeat something: Windows Media Player for Macintosh is something MS ceased to develop any further. Don't be tricked by Microsoft, they try to trick server admins and media bosses that it is working perfectly. No it doesn't. It NEVER DID. Even on OS X 10.3.x.
You know why they care to trick media that wmedia works perfectly on Mac? Here is the deal: Large portion of Mac userbase is rich, educated and decision making types which media can't ignore. They are "A+ and AB" class in advertisers jargon.
Problem is: Windows Media NEVER EVER WORKED RIGHT ON ANYTHING OTHER THAN MS WINDOWS/IE CONFIGURATION! (don't mention any third party plugin/hack)
If you really want to reach Mac userbase, you give people choice of 3 media players. Quicktime, Realplayer, Windows Media. As Quicktime and Real (Helix) are advanced stuff with technologies, features, specs ages ahead of windows media server they will charge money. Apologies on behalf of them!
The problem with Linux community? Well non relevant hate to Real Networks (from Linux users) and people who will shout "it is closed source, has DRM option! evil!" if Apple dares to ship Quicktime for Linux.

Not just that, it even doesn't include human/filter readable text anymore. They do some gif (or html) trick so the spam is in fact a "picture" which would require OCR. I am not sure about OCR as all OCR software runs perfect on 300 DPI, not some pixel text.
MS XBox or Cell Power arch CPUs are specialised processors. E.g. the MS Xbox 360 CPU has 3 cores. They have problem with desktop application usage.
I know the Intel or AMD duo-poly has huge impact on personal computing but it is not the case here.
For example a monster CPU named Power6 will ship in months which will have max speed of 5.7 Ghz. If you remember it is a RISC CPU , you can imagine the huge power. The problem is, it is not cheap, not suitable for home computing and needs very advanced coders.
So sadly it is the state after Apple gave up Power architecture with some really fake reasons. It shouldn't happen but it happened.
If you just want to run graphics applications on Linux, there is always Terrasoft machines which runs Yellow Dog Linux which is really optimised for PowerPC Apple uses. For example http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/products/ibm/p5- 185.shtml
I think submitter is a folding@home user like me and wanted to share these great news with Slashdot "technical community".
You see the result as half of the posters say PS3 has a bad performance and other half says folding@home, a scientific project is sort of "fake" thing.
Please don't "share" any folding@home news with this user profile from now on.
As folding@home is a scientific computation , if people get wrong impression from these "know everything" geeks they will simply delete folding@home. That _is_ a problem. Folding@home sends and reserves a data to a single machine and expect it e.g. 80 days later. If the user gets that data, nobody touches that data until it expires. So there can't be a worse thing to do against that project unless you start DOS attack to Stanford servers.
Lets make it more clear. Here is one of proteins in my quad G5 machine gets computed while I write this message. " issue: Wed Aug 16 14:54:13 2006; begin: Wed Aug 16 14:54:17 2006
expect: Sat Aug 26 00:56:54 2006; due: Thu Nov 30 13:54:17 2006 (106 days)" "p2128_ww2128"
So, if I am end user who gets folding@home and doesn't know how project works, I see couple of geeks saying it is a bad, useless thing, I uninstall folding@home yes? That portion of data BELONGS to my computer and there is no way Stanford will figure until 106 days. Another guy could be folding it.
Of course, there were AC posting like "I am in medical industry, nobody needs a thing like this" and Doctor Vijay Pande had to "reply" using Stanford forums giving up his real work to reply some fake medical worker. I believe because of that +5 interesting AC post (yes, a while!) many people uninstalled folding@home really wasting work units AND the CPU time they spent so far.
Other real scientists had to spare their time to massively stupid predictions like "IP will be locked for 70 years" too.
It is NOT a game, it is not sort of FAKE thing, people of Stanford and GROMACS like organisations spare thousands of hours of professional work and users donate their IDLE cpu time to project which has impact on REAL science and REAL medical work.
I really don't care if you hate PS3 processor or memory architecture, just stay hell out of hurting a scientific project running for years. We (folding community) really don't need your types watts or processor power at all.
Memory on PS3 makes it state of the art. It is some maniacal configuration RDRAM (yes, Rambus) configuration which doesn't exist except some custom workstations.
This is the memory archi making cell suck? Also your 100 million playstations running folding@home needing to build powerplants really shows some troll signs.
Yes, people choose to run folding@home, a VALID STANFORD PROJECT on their personal PCs instead of idling them. Live with it.
Nobody runs their PC or workstation ONLY for folding, they run folding WHILE PC runs. Very different.
I got a Quad G5 and while I use it for browsing, e-mail , my CPU usage is down to 3% levels. So, I run folding@home which runs in those idle cycles. Power saving? I run a 8000 BTU air conditioner here for my own comfort, THAT is the power waster for you.
CPU and Memory suck? OMG man, you know that device defaults to 1080p HDTV 3d and Dolby Digital sound yes?

:)
If you use that extension, clueless webmaster wins!
Only way is to find/enable respected RBL lists.
On a bit unrelated note, when will your ISPs start to fight against at least open proxies?
With such speed we are even more doomed (as spam receiving people).
Top senders there will look familiar to you:
http://www.senderbase.org/
Either France became completely nuts about e-mail communication or they are spamming.
BTW it includes my own country and ISP too and I am ashamed, no "freedom fries" attitude in my post.
Are you nuts? Don't make jokes like that on Slashdot especially against Microsoft. (includes Apple too!)

:)
They are already mad to this community joking about their fake "successes" each time they do a press release or a paid/shadowy Gartner "research".
I mean check that about what I mean:

There are lawyers who are paid to be evil assholes you know? MS and Apple hires them for some reason
MS XBox or Cell Power arch CPUs are specialised processors. E.g. the MS Xbox 360 CPU has 3 cores. They have problem with desktop application usage.

O SW
For example http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/products/ibm/p5
Or, a quad core powerpc 970 otw soon: http://projects.ppczone.org/projects.php?program=
Should watch this site for PPC news: http://www.power.org/
I think submitter is a folding@home user like me and wanted to share these great news with Slashdot "technical community".
4 9
" issue: Wed Aug 16 14:54:13 2006; begin: Wed Aug 16 14:54:17 2006
expect: Sat Aug 26 00:56:54 2006; due: Thu Nov 30 13:54:17 2006 (106 days)"
"p2128_ww2128"
So, if I am end user who gets folding@home and doesn't know how project works, I see couple of geeks saying it is a bad, useless thing, I uninstall folding@home yes? That portion of data BELONGS to my computer and there is no way Stanford will figure until 106 days. Another guy could be folding it.
An article discussing seti@home and if it is needed on WSJ has made to slashdot
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/06/28/05562
BTW same applies to BOINC etc too.
Are you nuts? Sorry but I had to ask it.
Memory on PS3 makes it state of the art. It is some maniacal configuration RDRAM (yes, Rambus) configuration which doesn't exist except some custom workstations.
256MB XDR Main RAM @3.2GHz
Main RAM -- 25.6GB/s
http://www.rambus.com/us/products/xdr_xdr2/
