    Anyone with even a modicum of technical saavy knows how to monitor traffic on their box. Kazaalite does not have trojans, virii, or spyware, I assure you.

    Between antivirus companies and people like me who obsessively watch network traffic when they're bored, anything shady would have been caught a while ago.

    1. Porn. Lots of it. All you can ever want. Much of it put there by the people who own it to promote their websites.

    2. mp3s that you legally own. I dunno about you, but I am picky about what I listen to. I own the CD to just about every song that I possess in mp3 format. (bootlegs not withstanding) I just like them in a portable, network-transportable format. Many people such as myself do the same.

    3. Distribution of free and open source software. Can't get into Redhat's FTP site? None of the mirrors giving you a good connection? Pull the ISO off of Kazaa.

    Yes, there is a hotbed of illegal activity there, but there's just as much legal activity. Just like Vegas. (but without so many hookers.)

    Maybe these adults whose tender sensibilties do not permit them to view sex or violence should go out and make their own films instead of denaturing an inherently violence or sex-based movie down to their tolerances.

    I'm not saying Clean Flicks shouldn't be allowed to do what they're doing, I'm just saying that these people are fooling themselves. If you delete the sex, violence, and profanity from most of the movies out there right now, there isn't a whole lot of substance left. So why do it?

    Don't buy that crap doctors feed you about a "healthy" weight. I'm 5'7" and the last time I was in good shape (10% body fat) I weighed about 200 lbs. It all depends on muscle mass, bone density, and frame size.

    Of course, I'm pushing 275 now, that's what 7 years of drinking beer and sitting my ass in front of a computer all day will do.

    I went to high school with this guy....other than being a pothead, he was nothing even close to having a criminal mentality. He was smart as hell, too. (which should be obvious from the fact he was at MIT) Just goes to show what getting in the way of corporate interests will do to your future, no matter who you are, what you do, or think you know.

    Crimes against non-entities (i.e. corporations) should never result in a prison term. Hell, non-violent crimes shouldn't either, short of violation of sanctity of space. (breaking and entering,etc)

    Good luck in prison, Chris. Remember, shank the first guy you see and you'll be alright the rest of the time you're there.

    If I get sick, you could say my illness is existing. It exists...hence I am sick. If I were sick prior to getting insurance plan X, it is pre-existing. Pre- in this case referring to the time period before my current insurance coverage. Yes, there's a lot of redundancy in the use of that...er..prefix, but in this case it makes an important distinction. If an insurance company said "we do not cover any existing medical conditions" they would be pretty worthless.

    Just being pedantic back at you. :)

    (But I have no idea about the trailer thing....dumb movie lingo)

    USENET is not a good forum for trading movies/video clips. Assembling a file from 100 parts, each part coming in 60 pieces is horrible. I don't care how automated they've made the USENET browsers file assembly, it still blows. If one little piece doesn't make it through, the entire file is useless. Give me Kazaalite for all my pr0n needs.

    Not to mention P2P is searchable and has multiple sources for a file. You take what your news server gives you on USENET. It's like the difference between watching HBO or going to the video store.

    You're absolutely incorrect. It's getting cancelled because Sci-Fi doesn't want to spend 1.5 million per episode IN SPITE of how many people watch. Farscape is the 2nd most popular science fiction show on television. Shows with that kind of budget are usually on wealthier networks. Hopefully they'll decide it's worth it or sell the rights to another network so the show can continue. I'd love to see Showtime pick it up...no commercials!

    Isn't there a clause in patent law about making an effort to protect your idea or losing rights to it? Or am I thinking of trademark/copyright law?

    It sounds to me like this guy was sitting on his patent until the time was right to sue, which should force him to lose his rights to the idea. (the ethics of which I will not go into as I'm in agreement with 99.999% of /. on the concept of software patents)

    Don't some satellites have nuclear power sources though? The radioactive particles entering our atmosphere can't be good. Plus there's the chance that all of the satellite won't burn up upon re-entry and you have to worry about dropping a big wad of semi-molten metal on someone's house, head, or dog.

    I'm curious why they haven't started using something like this to remove old satellites. A remote controlled vehicle equipped with a mass delivery system (rail gun, propellent, hell it could even ram them) that would deliver enough force to knock the old satellites out of orbit and maybe on a vector towards the sun where they will be quietly taken apart into component atoms.

    Any atronomists/physicists know what the gravitational pull of the earth is in orbit and how much force would be necessary to kick, say, a 2000 lb satellite to escape velocity?

    You nailed it brother. Aside from those two facts (which are great reasons not to privatize prisons) you also have to look at the fact that a guard at a private prison is going to make about 1/2 to 2/3 the salary of a guard at a state or federal prison. What kind of person do you think you're going to get who will put up with that kind of work for $8/hr? (Especially in women's and children's penal institutions) You're going to get someone who's abusive and/or unqualified for the job.

    Aside from the social taboos involved, do you really want a convicted felon knowing your name, address, phone number, and credit card information?
    How many of you get a little snotty to a phone rep when they're stupid? Do you think inmates are the cream of the intellectual crop? Do you think they won't hesistate to show up at your house when they get out if you piss em off?

  21. Other Federal Agent jobs on Many Hackers Too Fat For The FBI · · Score: 2

    There are still many agencies that are in need of agents with 1337 skills, and they don't have as strict requirements as the FBI. US Customs, the IRS, BATF, INS (Immigration) all have field agent/technician jobs. Their physical fitness requirements are secondary to qualifications and experience. Basically you need to be able to run a mile in under 15 minutes, then do 100 situps and 50 pushups. While that might preclude some people, it's not exactly the pinnacle of human fitness. They are pretty hardcore on the background check, though, but they're moving away from the polygraph since they're smart enough to realize it doesn't work. (Secret Service and FBI poly the most)

    As far as your college degree, what was told me to directly by a hiring manager for US Customs is that they aren't as interested in criminal justice degrees as they are science/finance/tech degrees with maybe a few CJ courses or a minor thrown in. Anyone can learn the depth of Federal criminal code in training classes. It's harder to learn the skills that matter in 26 weeks of training.

    DoCoMo found that kids who carry cell phones do worse on tests than kids who don't carry phones.

    Did it ever occur to them that maybe the kids with cell phones might have more active social lives and thus spend less time focused on school work? I know the chatty little social butterflies where I grew up were dumbasses. Or on the contraverse, smarter kids choose not to use cell phones to call their friends all the time because they know they'll talk to them eventually.

    I study done by a real sociologist should have a lot more data than those two variables. No statistician worth his/her salt would be proud of that relation without additional supporting data.

    I don't think that's the case....

    Look at hockey. Hockey games sell out almost every time, and they play 82 games per season, not too far from what baseball players hit. (And that's not counting playoffs which add could potentially add up to 35 more games to a team's schedule. Oh, and I forgot mention pre-season)

    Not to mention a very large viewership when games are televised...maybe not to the level of football, but still well within the realm of drooling fandom.

    No, the problem with baseball is that the fans feel betrayed by the teams and the players. The first strike made them realize that their big heroes were just in it for the money and don't give a rats ass about the fans. They lost integrity and honor in the eyes of baseball viewers, and it keeps getting worse, what with rampant drug abuse, threats of strikes, and now this intellectual property issue.

    The state of baseball now does make me sad, I used to spend my summers as a kid planning my activities around Cubs games. Now, I could honestly care less. The greed of the players and the greed of the franchises ruined it for everyone.
