  1. First step on Toshiba to Demo New Fuel Cell MP3 Players · · Score: 3, Informative

I have held off on buying an MP3 player because I can't find one that supports OGG, has a radio in it, and gets good battery life. Assuming Toshiba puts one out that meets the first two specifications and has generous amounts of storage, I think I would look into this one.

Right now, I have a Sony ATRAC3 MP3/CD player. It gets 50 hour battery life on 2 AA batteries, and has virtually unlimited storage (as many 700MB CDs as I feel like carrying), plus it only cost $100 or so when it was purchased. Granted, it doesn't support OGG, but when I got it I didn't know about OGG.

In addition, I bought my laptop that I'm on right now from Toshiba Labor Day weekend 2003, and I've already decided I'm not buying a new one until Toshiba releases their new laptops that (according to the article I read a while back) charge 80% in 15 minutes with little discharge.

I also recall an article about a fuel-cell based laptop, lasted something like 15 hours on one fueling. Don't remember if it was Toshiba or another company.

Where are all these things? I've heard so much about them and I'm sure I'm not the only one anxiously awaiting them. Toshiba and any other companies need to hurry up and get these things out the door, as they will solve many of the biggest battery-related problems.

Or so you think. If Linux were more widely supported, companies would provide drivers for both Windows and Linux on the CD. I must add that I have had to manually install drivers off the CD for most sound cards (among other things) I've dealt with in the last several years. It did not work out of the box.

Is it easier to install the drivers in Windows? At this time, yes, but were they made available on the CD in, say, and RPM and DEB format or something, it would not be anywhere near as difficult.

Thinking about this for a moment..... What option would the Supreme Court have? What basis would they have to modify the bill passed by Congress?

But does it matter? The point of the Supreme Court is to serve justice and uphold the Constitution. If it believes a law is unjust, the law is declared unconstitutional. In this case, I think the court would have to side with Apple simply because they came up with it, they put the R&D into it, they innovated it, and they deserve to make the money off it. Especially when it's EASILY provable that they came up with it first.

I shouldn't have to rush off to patent something the instant I come anywhere near finishing it (especially if I'm not a major corporation that can do these things without taking out a huge loan) just to protect my work.

I, for one, don't like the first-to-file system, because it is easy for something like the recent Apple/MS iTunes interface thing. Apple CLEARLY introduced it first, and yet MS has filed for a patent. I wonder, if a case like this went before the Supreme Court, would they say that Apple had the right to the patent after all?

That would suck, some person working for years on a new device, only for someone to learn about it and file a patent first and get away with it.

We should be tackling the real issue, which is allowing patents for "a method to put numbers in a box" and the like. Obvious patents should not only not be granted, but if it's blatantly obvious, they should be fined or at the least admonished for wasting time and resources on it.

  20. Re:Um, HDTV Switchover? on Motorola to Marry BPL and Wireless · · Score: 1

True, channels 2-6 aren't favorable and so far it looks like most sane TV stations are abandoning it (not my local PBS though...). I'm hoping that the FCC will drop channels 2-6 myself and expand the FM radio band into channels 5 and 6 (being that there's a gap between 4 and 5) and find some use for 2-4.

That doesn't change the fact that the switch-over will have no effect on cable viewers who will still suffer with signal leak. Realize that while OTA TV is required to go digital, cable is only required to provide those signals--even if they're downconverted to analog.

  21. Re:Here come... on Motorola to Marry BPL and Wireless · · Score: 2, Interesting

Um, do you have any idea what you're saying? BPL has been licensed to use frequencies from just above AM radio all the way up into the middle of TV Channel 5. (that's about 2MHz-80MHz) I don't know about you, but I watch TV with an antenna, and I already get tons of impulse/electrical noise on channels 2-6 as it is, not to mention an FM radio station on 88.3 trashes channel 6. It's already been proven that electrical devices that DON'T have BPL in them can cause massive amounts of interference to signals (try turning on a hair dryer or an electric paper shredder while watching the lower channels), and the introduction of BPL will only make this interference worse and constant. In addition, shortwave radio, which the rest of the world still uses, covers from 3MHz-30MHz.

And don't think that just because you have cable it's not going to affect you--cable leaks are well-known and proven to be problematic (see AVSForum.Com and the fiasco involving WBBM-DT on channel 3 in Chicago). Cable leaks allow for not only interference from OTA TV and FM station in the cable line (I've seen it before) but also allow for additional outside electrical noise. Regular electrical noise is one thing, but I've seen that and I've seen two-way interference, and let me tell you that two-way interference isn't fun (walkie-talkies). Instead of having just lines or dots in the picture, the whole picture goes away and the sound becomes that of the two-way.

You would think that since I live in a rural area that I'd be for this, and when I first heard about it, I was. But I think people I know would much rather be able to watch TV than have high-speed internet. (And yes there are a good number of people who still rely on OTA TV here)

Note how I didn't mention ham radio anywhere in there.

Can someone explain what sense this makes? Wouldn't Nextel have some interest in keeping the iDen network going instead of paying royalties over CDMA? Or is the cost of continuing to build out the iDen network more than the royalties? Or am I misunderstanding the whole thing?

Yet another is almost all infomercials (Pax or as it's now called 'i'). One more is a blend of the two. That's down to 7. Then the local UPN station spends about half their time doing religion. That's 6. Two PBS stations, CBS, NBC, ABC, and Fox.

On top of that, on Sundays the three latter stations fill all of Sunday morning up with religion. Two different Jerry Falwell shows on at once. Heck, the GM of the ABC station is a member of Jerry Falwell's church!

I have only been satisfied with support twice in my life.

Toshiba and DeLorme are the only two companies that I can honestly say had good support.

I know DeLorme (mapping software) is a bit off topic, but what happened was I had gotten TopoUSA 5.0 for my birthday (I had 4.0 before) but it was in CD form. In CD form, it takes 7 CDs to cover the US, however it's only one DVD.

Now my birthday is at the end of October. This software was purchased in the middle of August and had a 30-day return/exchange policy. I called up support not expecting much help. I talked to the guy and explained exactly what happened. He gave me an RMA anyway and everything was good.

As far as Toshiba goes, I think they're a great computer company all around. I have had a Toshiba laptop since August 2003 with no issues I haven't brought upon myself (heh). I don't know anybody who has had a problem with a Toshiba. I will never buy a non-Toshiba laptop. Even if Toshiba never puts AMD chips in their laptops.

I decided one day to shift my partitions around. Take a bit from RedHat and add it to Windows. Well, in the middle of it, my partition software crashed. It killed all of my non-Windows partitions (I had a C: for windows/programs, a Y: for documents and such, a few others, plus linux). Naturally GRUB panicked since it couldn't find /boot and I couldn't start Windows anymore. I did a bit of research and discovered fixmbr on the XP CD. Only problem was that when I tried to do it, it asked for an admin password. I had never set one (that I can remember, maybe Best Buy did?). So I called up tech support. I told them exactly what happened and that it was entirely my fault. They STILL tried to help me out, although they were ultimately unsuccessful. A few hours after the phone call I discovered a password reset program that I was able to use and fix it.

    Of course, YMMV.
