  1. Ignoring the obvious on Violent Games 'Almost' As Dangerous as Smoking · · Score: 1

Get that PSP away from me, I don't want any of your second-hand fragging to endanger my health!"
Yeah. I don't think I'll be hearing that one.

I don't know why you'd even question it. It should be fairly obvious to any reasonable human being that seeing other humans depicted doing something, and other humans participating in a game where they play out something, is going to influence you to think similarly. We do it, chimps do it, and (arguably, but again, probably not by reasonable people) every other mammal does it.

Ahh, but compared to the Shelbyville Bullet, our new maglev kicks butt. Therefore, it must be done.

Shelbyville, n: Town in The Simpsons, in Japan, or in any country other which arrogance tells us we have to be better than.
Maglev, n: nice idea, for some ideal country where people actually realise that public transport is potentially better than the private variety.

  4. Statistics vs. photos on Radiation Not As Hazardous As Once Believed · · Score: 1

This is why statistics are often useless BS. When it comes to environmental impact, and lives affected, a photo is worth a thousand reports. I partly agree with people who say that nuclear power is the sane alternative vs. coal etc. However, I challenge anyone with a mature conscience to look at photos of Hiroshima or Chernobyl and say that we're truly ready to have that kind of thing in widespread use.

  5. cease and desist on Apple 10.4.11 Update Can Brick Macs With Boot Camp · · Score: 1, Funny

PLEASE stop using this term "bricked" around IT stuff. Here in the UK at least, it does not mean what you think it means. Here's a few typical UK uses of the word. Spot the one that your use verges on:

    * I'll use these bricks to build a wall.
    * It's about the size of a brick.
    * I wasn't just scared; I was shitting bricks.
  6. UK has a very bad record on this on France Leading Charge Against OOXML · · Score: 4, Interesting

The UK has had a policy of equal consideration for open source solutions for years now. Unfortunately there are still many cases of corruption -- Microsoft's recent "Schools 2000" (I think that was the name, but possibly not) program, for instance, where it gets a monopoly in every school, and cases where the best bidders on non-IT contracts have been told that they "said all the right things, except that they didn't use the word 'Microsoft'".

Unfortunately it's easy for a country to say it supports open standards, just as it's easy for a country to say it's "helping" in Iraq. Reality is often much different.

  10. Plainly BS on Amazon's Kindle Sells Out In 5.5 Hours · · Score: 1

The kindle ain't sold out because it is still in production. It is trivial to set this scenario up and Amazon should fire its marketting department if they hadn't set this up. It is a basic move. Make the item seem hot, so that people get the idea that they MUST buy it now or they may not have another chance.

Well, personally I would say that they should fire their marketing department for not being capable of marketing honestly. But that's another issue.

On gullibility vs. sales tricks, I agree. The very fact that amazon's kindle page has a special sold out message instead of the usual tried and tested stock level reporting system that's used for other products should tell you that it's fishy... as if you needed any more evidence of it.
  11. Sun on Amazon's Kindle Sells Out In 5.5 Hours · · Score: 1

The important metric for readability is not resolution, it is pixel density.

For ebook readers, I'd say the main issue is long-term readability on a sunny day in the park.

Kindle has a pixel density of 167 ppi, which is higher than most LCD screens.

But still pretty awful compared to a typical printed novel or a glossy magazine.

Your laziness makes you the puppet of a corporation which does harm on a daily basis, and yet you insult the people who simply point out the issue to you, trying to help you out. On another note...
