  1. Re:I shall answer the question! on Student Faces Expulsion for Facebook Study Group · · Score: 1

I personally dislike this latest trend toward working in groups, at least as an older adult student. All day long I work at a job and work with a team of people. I collaborate, I share, I ask questions, and contribute answers. When I goto class in the evening or late afternoon, I feel like I am being cheated because the professor wants other students to teach each other. I know that a 22 year old has some value to contribute (lord knows, they sure think they do), but personally I want to hear from the prof., who is the expert on the matter. Then there is always some loud mouth, or domineering person, or sullen uninvolved person in the group who detracts from the learning experience. Maybe you, as a professor, think it's just a matter of the professor being expert at directing these groups. Maybe we're supposed to learn how to be socially adept and as a group, tell the loud mouth, overly assertive, or sullen group members to stop? Why is this my responsibility?

  2. Re:Counting clicks on Microsoft Says Not All Ad Clicks Are Created Equal · · Score: 1

So why do they expect so much more from Internet ads?

Because the way internet ads are displayed on a website means these ads can be tracked, down to the most granular level. Many publishers (like this site for instance) might use an ad-server that is hosted by Doubleclick. Inside of this ad server are reporting tools that show how many ads were delivered, what time of day, what geographic location they were showed in, how many people clicked. Sometimes you can track when someone hovers over an ad, but doesn't click. Not all advertisers consider "the click" the measure of success. For large companies that are advertising sometimes they have "branding" campaigns - basically they just want to get their brand known, and things like clicks do not matter as much. For others, they want you to download something, or buy an item - those are the ones where measuring clicks matter more (but even so clicks shouldn't matter as much as they do - what matters is did the person actually go through with it and download or buy something?). I have seen things move beyond this click based measuring though and advertisers are paying more for integration into content, becoming part of the "community" - basically, product placement.

This might be comparing apples and oranges, but Maya ports to Linux. Mainly movie houses use this, I am guessing because it must be better to use a Linux system and Maya (http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/5235). It seems to me, Photoshop is kind of one of those core graphics applications this same audience would employ in their studio... I bet they would love to see Photoshop ported to Linux. I know I would make the switch to Linux if that was an option. Not to knock Wine, but running any kind of big app through an emulator sucks ass.

Also, I'm not a real technical person, but isn't OSX like built on top of Free BSD? How hard can it be to port to Linux (yes I know they are different)?

Back in the dot com boom this was pretty bad, and partly I think it's because everyone feels they have to have a voice or be mega assertive in order for their new idea to be heard. Right now there's a lot of new ideas (good and bad) and folks just want their piece of the action. What is different is the one liners, which is a product of culture emphasizing rush rush rush, push push push, hurry hurry hurry. I've noticed a resurgence of "how r u" as well, even from supposedly smart people.

But it looks light weight, which might prove useful. I think it's funny the first thing they think about is the Minority Report-like ad displays, but there are many more uses for this. As an artist, it would be cool to send my portfolio in one of these rather than a CD or something where someone has to make extra steps to load it into their computer, they just unroll this and the display starts. This being if they could get the price down enough for it to be treated in this kind of casual fashion. If it's sealed and meant for outdoor use, maybe it would be more weather proof, giving it possible uses in the field. Maybe in medical uses it could be used as a display for enhanced X-rays (I'm just thinking of floppy mylar things rambling)

I'm not disappointed to see the casinos go away. They cause lag, there's no way to control if the machines are rigged or not, and in general they are almost as much of a blight on a sim as ad farms and camping. It sucks that "the law" had to come into play, and for that I am a bit disappointed as I think many residents had hoped it would stay the Wild Wild West just a little longer. But I think when it comes to people getting ripped off with money, in the long run SL will be better off to keep away that element. They have to do what they can to make it a more "secure" commerce environment - because while I disagree that it is all about sex and gambling (from my minority pov I suppose), I would totally agree that a large amount of activity is oriented towards consuming/shopping.

But the commenter below is right... who goes to the homepage anyway? I use yahoo movies, groups, and mail and just go directly there. Recently they gave me unlimited storage in my (free) mail account although I can't stand the bloaty beta mail and stick to the old school version. Even though Yahoo has changed a lot over the years it has a bit of comfort to it - it's UI is familiar. It used to be separate job functions but when the dot com bust happened there was so much competition for the graphic/web jobs, employers began expecting the designer to do it ALL. It has been that way ever since, but only in recent times have things began to separate a little again. However with tools like Macromedia Flash, one still does need to know scripting so it is hard to avoid both worlds it's just a fact of life. Another skill that is often overlooked and assumed to be a part of the "super designer" is UI design. To me this is a separate skill altogether and people just usually lump it in with web design... but if you look at a lot of websites out there you can tell people really don't know what they're doing with that.

I agree CorelDRAW Graphics Suite is very high quality, at a quarter of the price. I'm a graphic designer by trade and recommend Corel to people who are interested in starting to work with graphics (because it's affordable) but it is a professional level software suite with a strong/loyal customer base.

Enabling your marketing department to produce their own graphics is a double edged sword. Sure you get them off your back if you are overworked, but the danger lies in they soon begin to think they are designers, and will tell you that they know better design than you. Or, you have to un-fu@# their mess ups which may take more time than you had saved by giving them tools. When they go to their next job, they will annoy the web developer or graphic designer with "I know HTML you better not tell me such and such can't be done." They will become reviled and make other people's life difficult because they think they "know something" when in reality they do not.

ok that was a bit cynical but it has happened.

The artistic process also teaches to see beyond the "rules," something I think many technical teaching styles are hampered by. They say that developers develop open source software because they have an itch they need to scratch. Creativity is important as well as an uninhibited approach to problem solving and for thinking of ways to scratch that itch. Legos teach building and are creative tools, but they aren't everything. Drawing, sketching, keeping an idea journal, encouraging expression, are important too. Teach them how to write well so they can communicate their ideas with others. Teach them how to persuade and visually communicate what they are enthusiastic about. If they are meant to be programmers or a developer - that will happen in time. At this young age, helping them realize their abilities and have confidence are more important in my opinion.
